PIP Continues Off the Hill Season with THE SHORT TREE AND THE BIRD THAT COULD NOT SING

PIP_The Short Tree and(CINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s Off the Hill series for families concludes with THE SHORT TREE AND THE BIRD THAT COULD NOT SING, which will tour to community venues throughout the Tristate from April 8 through May 24. Recommended for ages 5 and up, the show is a wacky fable of an unlikely friendship between a tree that resents its roots and a spunky, unflappable bird with a horrible singing voice.

Adapted by Dennis Foon from his picture book of the same name, the play follows the bird and tree’s relationship as it builds around the joys of music, storytelling, the weather and the stars. The two friends must navigate the ups and downs of getting to know one another, growing closer and suddenly finding themselves apart.

Playhouse Education Director Mark Lutwak, who will direct the production, calls THE SHORT TREE AND THE BIRD THAT COULD NOT SING “a charming and funny play about building friendship and separation — two processes with which young kids are familiar. For kids, it’s an epic and entertaining journey with a full roller coaster of emotions.”

The cast includes Meggy Hai Trang (Ensemble), Chelsea D. Harrison (Ensemble), Rico Reid (Short Tree), Sam Rueff (Ensemble), Shayna Schmidt (Bird) and Britian Seibert (Ensemble), all members of the Playhouse’s Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company. Other production team members include Melanie Burgess (Set/Props/Costume Designer), Katherine Stromberger (Set/Props/Costume Design Associate), Sherry Tippey (Puppet Construction), Kendra Struthers (Music Director), Aly Michaud (Choreographer) and Tracy Hoida (Stage Manager).

For more information about the Playhouse’s education and outreach programs, contact the Education Department at 513-345-2242 or visit www.cincyplay.com.

Dater Foundation. The season is presented by The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation and Heidelberg Distributing Company. The season sponsor of new work is The Lois and Richard Rosenthal Foundation.

CCM Prep Offers Theatre Design and Tech Workshop Summer Camp

CCMPREP_logoA summer camp for Theater Techies!! What an awesome idea!!

Do you know a high school student who is fascinated by light boards, spotlights, sound boards, props, costumes and scenery and who now wants to know more so they can do more?

This summer the CCM Preparatory Department is offering high school students captivated by stagecraft a chance to take their knowledge and skills to the next level with the Theater Design and Tech Workshop, July 7- 19 at the College-Conservatory of Music. This full-day camp is a comprehensive hands-on program that will introduce students to all the production fields as well as how the design elements of a production are conceived, rendered and implemented. Students will take away practical knowledge they can use in their present high school and community theater endeavors and also explore whether this might be a career path for them to pursue. Either way, it will be two weeks of techie heaven!

For more information, download the attached flyer, check out our website at ccm.uc.edu/prep/immersion2014 or call Dennis Murphy at 513.556.2595.

In-person interviews are coming up on March 22 but you can also apply online before June 7th.

If you thought you knew the story of The Princess and the Pea, you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken’s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn’t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.
