New Edgecliff Theatre Tony Party at Tillie’s in Northside‏

NETNew Edgecliff Theatre will celebrate American Theatre’s biggest night of the year with a Tony Party Fundraiser at Tillie’s Lounge in Northside on Sunday June 7. Festivities will begin at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $25.

The evening will feature the simulcast of the annual Tony Awards Ceremony from New York City and include Tony Nominee themed appetizers, entertainment, a cash bar and the traditional Tony Award Pool. Each guest will receive a form listing all the Tony Nominees from the televised ceremony. They will then select a winner in each category. The person who has the most correct guesses will win a pair of tickets to the opening night Pippin, part of the 2015-16 Broadway in Cincinnati Series at the Aronoff Center, and a $50 gift certificate to Taste of Belgium.

Tillie’s Lounge is Northside’s newest nightspot recently opened by Nigel Cotterill and J.C. Diaz. The duo also ownBelow Zero Lounge in Over the Rhine. Located at 4042 Hamilton Avenue, the lounge is named for Tillie the elephant of the Terrace Park-based Robinson Circus, a popular traveling show in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She once paraded down the streets of Northside and she had a larger-than-life story, even for an elephant. When she died on Jan. 17, 1932, it was front page news in The Enquirer, which noted her “heroic deeds, service to humanity and outstanding achievements in her role as an entertainer.”

Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Honors a Cincinnati Legend with Free Evening CELEBRATING KING RECORDS

CFF_Cincinnati King(CINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park will salute the legacy of Cincinnati’s own King Records with a one-of-a-kind celebration in Over-the-Rhine’s Washington Park on Sunday, May 31. CELEBRATING KING RECORDS will feature an evening of food, music and memories, capped with an exciting staged concert reading of KJ Sanchez’s play CINCINNATI KING. The event launches the OTR Performs series and is also included as part of this year’s Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

Sanchez has described CINCINNATI KING as a “theatrical album” about the history of Cincinnati music, racial equality and the legendary rhythm and blues label.

CELEBRATING KING RECORDS festivities will begin at 5 p.m. with music and theatre activities for children and the chance to explore memorabilia from King Studios. Legendary King Records studio drummer Philip Paul and his quartet will kick off the evening’s entertainment at 5:30 p.m. with a performance of the label’s greatest hits and behind-the-scenes stories. The staged concert reading of CINCINNATI KING will be presented at 7 p.m. Throughout the evening, food trucks and beverage sales will be available in the park.

Playhouse Artistic Director Blake Robison commissioned KJ Sanchez, one of the theatre’s associate artists, to create the play. Sanchez is the founder and CEO of American Records, a company devoted to making theatre that chronicles our time. The CINCINNATI KING project was designed to collect and share stories that preserve a unique part of Cincinnati’s history, foster understanding and ignite dialogue.

What began as an investigation specifically into the history of King Records quickly took on broader meaning thanks to Syd Nathan’s unique contributions to the music industry and to Cincinnati at large. Nathan founded King Records in 1943 as a country label. King’s sister labels, Queen and Federal, became immensely successful for fulfilling the needs of a different audience and supporting the growing popularity of African-American rhythm and blues artists. Iconic singer James Brown started his career at King Records.

King Records became one of the most successful independent labels of the 1940s and 1950s. Nathan revolutionized the industry by keeping the entire production process in house, recording, mastering, printing, pressing and shipping all of the albums King produced. At the same time, he employed both blacks and whites, who worked side by side, inside and outside of the studio. King Records was one of the first integrated industries in Cincinnati.

Working with a group of Playhouse board and staff members, drama students from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and community volunteers, Sanchez compiled CINCINNATI KING from transcripts of interviews with nearly 50 people from across the Tristate. Additional material was drawn from recordings Nathan himself made, as well as newspaper clippings and books written about King Records.

ArtReach Presents THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS at the Fitton Center

Based on the 1908 children’s tale by Kenneth Grahame, the peaceful lives of Mole and Rat are interrupted when Toad finds a new, exciting invention—a motorcar! When the fate of Toad Hall hangs in the balance, the friends enlist the help of the reclusive Badger, who lives deep in the Wild Wood. A classic story of friendship, keeping up with the times, and conquering one’s fears, this new musical adaptation will take you on an adventure by the river that you’ll never forget.

Fitton Family Fridays feature entertainment geared to kids of all ages, from preschoolers to teenagers – including parents and grandparents who are still kids at heart. Kid-friendly drinks and an assortment of light appetizers will be served before the show and are included in the ticket price. This series is sponsored by Vaden Fitton. MEMORIAM, at the Aronoff, Explores Edges of Memories, Memory Loss

CINCINNATI, OHIO — Modern dance company MamLuft&Co. Dance premieres Memoriam (In Memory of Memory) at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater on Memorial Day weekend, Friday and Saturday, May 22 and 23, 2015 (8pm, tickets available now at cincinnatiarts.org, more information at MLCo.org/memoriam).

The company — recently named “Best Dance Company Pushing the Envelope” (2012) by CityBeat — is joined by a cast of extras comprised of senior citizens from the community.

CityBeat has also described MamLuft&Co. Dance as “intrepid” and “impressive” by, and the paper’s Kathy Valin calls Jeanne Mam-Luft “a brainy director and accomplished choreographer (and filmmaker).” Seen and Heard International’s Rafael de Acha describes the company’s work as “potent stuff,” “athletic,” and “pure.”

In MEMORIAM, the company and its senior guest performers embark on a journey through the mind, memories, and experiences of unnamed main characters portrayed by MamLuft&Co. Dance artists Steven Evans (originally from Cincinnati, Ohio) and Ms. Neile Martin (Memphis, Tenessee).

While MEMORIAM begins carefree and untroubled, the experiences of Mr. Evans and Ms. Martin’s characters take a foreboding turn when Ms. Martin begins to lose her memories (effectively, the experiences that have made her who she is). The succeeding loss is felt and echoed among the community, portrayed by a chorus of MamLuft&Co. Dance performers and aforementioned extras played by senior citizens from the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area.

Heightened by multi-media projections featuring authentic vintage home movies (dating back to a wedding in 1930s Netherlands) and depictions of stars-turned-memories-turned-brain-synpases, MEMORIAM is a bittersweet story about remembering and fading, memorializing and forgetting, and asking what we lose when we forget.

MEMORIAM (In Memory of Memory) is choreographed by Elena Rodriguez (Rehearsal Director originally from Queens, NY), Susan Honer (Choreographer from Roanoke, VA), and Jeanne Mam-Luft (Director/Choreographer from Dallas, TX), in collaboration with the performers Nicole Suzel (Texas/New Jersey/New York), Clint Fisher (Springfield, Ohio), Vivian Kim (Lincoln, Nebraska), and Delia Constantino (Zanesville, Ohio). The score is composed by long-time company friend and collaborator, Mike Wall (who works under the moniker, soundFORMovement), and lighting design is by Daniel Feith (who has worked with Pilobolus, Doug Varone and Dancers, Momix, Cincinnati Ballet, Dayton Ballet, and many other notable dance organizations).

MamLuft&Co. Dance gratefully acknowledges the operating support of the Ohio Arts Council, which helped fund this organization with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. Memoriam makes its premiere at the Aronoff Center, where MamLuft&Co. Dance is a resident company, and whose rent is subsidized by an award from The Greater Cincinnati Foundation. MamLuft&Co. Dance is also a resident company of the Clifton Cultural Arts Center with generous support from Mark McKillip. Memoriam is made possible through a Project Support Grant from ArtsWave. MamLuft&Co. Dance’s Outreach Program has been supported through a grant from The Summerfair Foundation, whose award will fund the purchase of a dance floor. Last, but not least, MamLuft&Co.
