Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park to Audition Children Jan. 11 for MOTHERS AND SONS

PIPCINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park will hold auditions on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, for the young boy’s role in Terrence McNally’s MOTHERS AND SONS.

The Playhouse is seeking a 6 to 10-year-old male Caucasian actor who can convincingly (physically) play the 6-year-old Bud, who is the son of two gay dads. All three are in a loving, stable and committed relationship. Bud is sharp and has a naturally outgoing personality.

Though the actor playing Bud will not be required to engage in dialogue or stage business that would be inappropriate for a 6-year-old, the show does contain some basic information about AIDS, as well as mortality, that is appropriate to the maturity level of a precocious 6-year-old child.

Parents/guardians should email a resume of any experience to the Playhouse, along with a photograph (a good quality school or family photo is acceptable). The resume and photo must be emailed again even if they have been sent in the past. The resume must include exact birth date and height, as well as an email address and telephone number.

At the audition, children will be asked to share a one-minute monologue, story or poem. Cold readings will be available. Interested children must be available for all rehearsals of this production, most of which are scheduled around school hours. Children must also be available for all performances of the show, which are scheduled Tuesdays through Sundays from March 18 to April 17, including one weekday public matinee.

Photographs and resumes should be emailed to the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park to kristin.clippard@cincyplay.com. The deadline for consideration is Jan. 12, 2016. Those selected to audition will be contacted by telephone to schedule specific times. Audition location and other details will be provided when appointments are made.

The Playhouse is supported, in part, by the generosity of the tens of thousands of individuals and businesses that give to ArtsWave. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation.

About the Play
One of the funniest plays ever written, this extraordinarily inventive, side-splitting comedy was first presented by the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, then produced in Great Britain, then went on to Broadway. The action centers on the hilarious dilemma of a young architect who is visited by a man he’s never met but who saved his life in Vietnam—the visitor turning out to be an incredibly inept, hopelessly stupid “nerd” who outstays his welcome with a vengeance. “Shue delivers a neatly crafted package that uses some classic comic forms to bring the audience to its knees, laughing.” —The Milwaukee Journal. “…the audience almost never stops laughing—handkerchiefs wiping away tears of merriment…” —Variety. “…a spring tonic of side-bruising laughter…” —The Milwaukee Tribune.

Role Breakdowns

  • Willum Cubbert (age: 30’s): Willum is an architect, currently designing a hotel for Mr. Waldgrave, and a pushover. He’s kind and intelligent, but Tansy says he “could use a little gumption.” He lacks the backbone to stand up for himself. He rents two rooms in his house to Tansy and Axel.
  • Thor Waldgrave (age: able to look 11 or younger): The Waldgraves’ terror of a son. “Poster child for planned parenthood,” as Axel calls him. Spends most of the play hiding in a closet or bedroom.
  • Clelia Waldgrave (age: 40’s): Mr. Waldgrave’s high-strung, put-upon wife. She holds back all of her emotions, and only releases her stress when she can break “something small.”
  • Warnock Waldgrave (age: 40-50’s): A boisterous, slightly dim businessman, owner of eight hotels, with no creativity and no tact. He never smiles.
  • Rick Steadman (age: 30-40’s): The titular “nerd.” He’s oblivious to insult and lacks manners or sensitivity. He tells Willum that he works as an inspector at a chalk factory in Wisconsin.
  • Axel Hammond (age: 30-40’s): Willum’s best friend and Tansy’s ex. He’s a pretentious, often-inebriated drama critic, always ready with a sarcastic comment.
  • Tansy McGinnis (age: 25-30s): A smart woman who is as attracted to Willum as he is to her, but who has been offered her dream job as a television weather forecaster in Washington, D.C., and feels guilty for leaving Willum behind. Idealistic, perky, and just as kind as Willum.

Note: Color-blind casting

  • Tuesday January 25th                          2:00pm – 7:00pm

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:

Touring Company- This is the entry level position to the ensemble. It’s a group of 6 actors that tour to schools, colleges, community centers, etc., within a two-hour radius of the city (these tours are almost never overnight). They perform a variety of programming, including 3 full length Shakespeare plays. They are also called on to go into schools and lead workshops on particular plays or performance techniques. In addition, they play a variety of supporting roles in our larger mainstage productions. It is a ten month contract running from July to May. The weekly salary is $200 and housing is provided. Must be Non-Equity.

Guest Artist- This is an artist brought in for a specific production or sometimes multiple productions. Contract and pay scale varies dependent on union status, size of role, etc. May be Equity or Non-Equity.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Please prepare two contrasting classical pieces, at least one of them Shakespeare. The combined pieces should not exceed 3 minutes; and if you have any additional classical pieces in your repertoire, it couldn’t hurt to dust them off, as you may be given an opportunity to perform them. Those auditioning for a Touring Company position may also have a very brief interview with the Education Director.

MATERIALS TO SUBMIT:

Once you’ve scheduled an audition (see below), please submit a current Headshot/Resume, as well as a cover letter. Please specify in the cover letter whether you are interested primarily in a Touring Company or Guest Artist position. For those interested in a Touring Company position, the cover letter should also include the following:

FAQs

  • I’m interested in becoming a part of the Resident Ensemble. What’s the process?

Members of the Resident Ensemble usually either graduate up from the Touring Company, or are Guest Artists that we have worked with a number of times. This gives both parties a chance to get to know each other before committing to a more long-term arrangement- in other words, go on few dates before getting hitched.

  • Are EMC points available?

    Yes.

  • I can’t make it to any of the allotted audition dates. Can I still audition?

If you absolutely can’t make it on any of the days listed, let us know and we can try to arrange an audition at a different time. It’s best to try to audition before the dates listed, as the casting process will begin very shortly after those dates. If you are from out-of-town, and are going to be in the area prior to the official auditions, we’re happy to try to set up an audition while you’re here to save you some travel costs.

  • Should I bring physical copies of my Headshot/Resume to the audition?

While we are trying to go all digital, we occasionally experience some glitches (hard to believe, I know), so it couldn’t hurt to bring along a couple of physical copies.

  • Do you accept video auditions?

We’re happy to take a look at video submissions, though we will almost always want to see an actor in person before casting them.

IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS PLEASE E-MAIL THEM TO: jeremy.dubin@cincyshakes.com

Thanks so much, and we’ll hope to see you in January!
