Auditions Announced for LOVE LETTERS at SSCC Theatre

SSCC_logoSSCC Theatre Company will hold auditions for the summer production of “Love Letters,” by A.R. Gurney.

Open to community members and students, auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25, in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium on Southern State Community College’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro.

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years—where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school, while Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” While Andy is off at war Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and, eventually, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should, and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair, but it is really too late for both of them. However Andy’s last letter, written to her mother after Melissa’s untimely death, makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant, and gave to, each other over the years—physically apart, perhaps, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be.

Those interested in auditioning will be asked to read from the script during their audition. Those interested in working on available crew positions will be asked to complete an interview during the audition.

If interested in auditioning, but unavailable to attend the audition date, please contact Director Paula Campagna (pcampagna@sscc.edu) to schedule an alternate audition date prior to May 25.
“Love Letters” will be performed June 23 – 25. For more information about available roles and rehearsal schedule, please visit www.sscctheatre.com.

April 14-16
Southern State Community College’s Central Campus [Hillsboro]

Directed by Rainee Angles

Cast: Jacob Bice as David O. Selznick, Camden Griffith as Ben Hecht, Shawn Thomsen as Victor Fleming & Chelsea Heifner as Miss Poppenghul

It’s 1939 and Hollywood is abuzz. Legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic, “Gone with the Wind,” a film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel. The screenplay just doesn’t work. So what’s an all-powerful movie mogul to do? While fending off the film’s stars, gossip columnists, and his own father-in-law, Selznick sends a car for famed screenwriter Ben Hecht and pulls formidable director Victor Fleming from the set of “The Wizard of Oz.” Summoning both to his office, he locks the doors, closes the shades, and on a diet of bananas and peanuts fueled by Miss Poppenghul, the three men labor over five days to fashion a screenplay that will become the blueprint for one of the most successful and beloved films of all time.

Sothern State Community College Daniels Auditorium [Hillsboro]

Directed by Rainee Angles

Cast: Jessica Wise as Truvy, Emma Horick as Annelle, Leslie Holmes as Ouiser, Bronwyn Jones as Miss Clairee, Paula Campagna as M’Lynn & Madison Hatfield as Shelby

Set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play is at times touching and funny.
