Auditions for PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE at Lebanon Theatre Company

LTC_logoWe are holding auditions for our summer production, Steve Martin’s PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE, on May 27 at 6pm and May 28th at 2pm. Auditions will consist of cold reads of selections from the script. No special preparation required. We are particularly interested in casting performers ages 16-25. LTC prides itself on making auditions a fun, inclusive, and non-intimidating process for all involved.

PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE is the first in LTC’s annual Summer Theatre series, designed to provide performance opportunities to our area’s young adult performers ages 16-25. We hope to showcase some of the best young talent from around the region while giving students the chance to develop their theatrical skills and perform for the broader community.

The production will be directed by Kurt Percy. Performances will be July 22-24 and 29-31 (8pm Friday and Saturday performances; 2pm Sunday performances; no dinner or brunch theatre for this production). The play is set in a bar, and therefore contains the appearance of alcohol use and some humor that may be inappropriate for young children. The production is recommended for audiences age 13 and older.

Synopsis
This long running Off-Broadway absurdist comedy places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In his first comedy for the stage, Steve Martin plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune as these two geniuses muse on the century’s achievements and prospects as well as other fanciful topics with infectious dizziness.

Bystanders, including Picasso’ agent, the bartender and his mistress, Picasso’s date, an elderly philosopher, Charles Dabernow Schmendimen, and an idiot inventor introduce additional flourishes of humor. The final surprise patron to join the merriment at the Lapin Agile is a charismatic dark haired singer time warped in from a later era.

This show is the first in LTCs annual Summer Theatre series, designed to provide performance opportunities to our area’s young adult performers ages 16-25. We hope to showcase some of the best young talent from around the region while giving students the chance to develop their theatrical skills and perform for the broader community.

Character descriptions follow.  Please note ages referenced are “stage ages.” If the actor can play in that range, they will be considered.

  • Willy Loman – An aging salesman.  Actor can play anywhere from 50’s to 60’s.  He suffers from depression and anxiety as a result of his dissipating career, his estranged relationship with his oldest son, Biff, and his guilt over an extramarital affair. As the play progresses, Willy loses the ability to distinguish between the present and his memories of the past.
  • Linda Loman – Willy Loman’s wife. Same age range as WIlly. She is Willy’s champion and takes it upon herself to reconcile her family. She will protect Willy at all costs, even if she must perpetuate his fantasies and deny his suicidal behavior.
  • Biff Loman – The Lomans’ older son. Actor can play 30’s to 40’s Biff has been estranged from Willy for over 15 years, during which time he has not been able to hold a steady job. Biff is the only member of the family who knows about Willy’s affair, and he resents his father bitterly.
  • Happy Loman – The Lomans’ younger son. Actor can play 30’s to 40’s.  Obviously, must be able to play a little younger than Biff.  Happy is a womanizer driven by his sexuality. He works as an assistant but exaggerates his position and his authority.
  • Uncle Ben – Willy’s older brother.  Actor  should be able to play 60’s to 70.  He made a fortune in the African jungle by the time he was 21 years old. He once offered Willy a job in Alaska. Ben appears in the play only in Willy’s memories and fantasies.
  • Charley – A long-time acquaintance of the Lomans. Actor must be able to play 50’s to 60’s Charley supplies Willy with a weekly loan once Willy is put on straight commission, and he repeatedly offers him a job. Charlie is a true friend to Willy, even though Willy is jealous of him. Charley appears in Willy’s memories, as well as in the actions of the present.
  • Bernard – Charley’s son. Same age range as Biff. He provided Biff with answers while they were in high school and attempted to help Biff study so that he would graduate, even though Willy and Biff would criticize him. He is a successful lawyer. Bernard appears in Willy’s memories, as well as in the present.
  • The Woman – Willy’s former lover, 20’s to 40, with whom he had an affair many years ago in Boston. Biff discovered the affair when she came out of the bathroom while he was in the room. She appears only in Willy’s memories and fantasies; however, as the play progresses, Willy has difficulty distinguishing between his memories of the Woman and his memories of Linda.
  • Howard Wagner – Willy’s current boss. 30’s to 40. He put Willy on straight commission prior to the play’s beginning, and later he fires him. Howard is a businessman, unaffected by the facts that Willy worked for his father and named him as a child.
  • Jenny – Charley’s secretary.- Any age range.
  • Stanley – A waiter. 20’s to 40’s
  • Miss Forsythe and Letta Young – prostitutes. Can play 20s.

(CINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park will hold auditions on Saturday, June 18, and Sunday, June 19, for children interested in performing in the theatre’s 2016 production of the annual holiday favorite A CHRISTMAS CAROL, presented by U.S. Bank.

Nine area children will be cast to fill speaking and non-speaking parts in the show. Roles are available for boys and girls 8 to 13 years old. Additionally, the part of Tiny Tim requires a boy 6 to 8 years of age. Those cast in previous productions of A CHRISTMAS CAROL will need to submit their information again to be considered for this year’s show. To be eligible, children must not turn 14 before Dec. 31, 2016.

Children should provide a resume of any experience to the Playhouse, along with a photograph (a good quality school or family photo is acceptable). The resume and photo must be submitted again even if they have been sent in the past. The resume must include exact birth date and height, as well as an email address and telephone number. At the audition, children will be asked to share a one-minute monologue, story or poem and to demonstrate a British accent.

Interested children must be available for all rehearsals of the production, most of which are scheduled around school hours. Children must also be available for all performances, which are scheduled Tuesdays through Sundays and include some weekday student and public matinees. Performance dates are available on the Playhouse website at www.cincyplay.com.

Visit the Employment section, Auditions tab in the footer of the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park website at http://www.cincyplay.com for details about how to schedule an audition and submit photographs and resumes. The deadline for consideration is June 3. Audition times will be confirmed by the Playhouse. All auditions will be held at the Playhouse, located in Eden Park at the edge of Mt. Adams.

Adapted by Howard Dallin, A CHRISTMAS CAROL is a faithful retelling of Charles Dickens’ beloved tale of a miserly humbug’s redemption that is enjoyed each season by multiple generations of Cincinnatians. The heartwarming message and spectacular effects of A CHRISTMAS CAROL make the show one of the Playhouse’s most popular productions each season. A CHRISTMAS CAROL will be performed from Nov. 23 through Dec. 31, 2016, in the Playhouse’s Robert S. Marx Theatre.

The Playhouse is supported, in part, by the generosity of the tens of thousands of individuals and businesses that give to ArtsWave.

The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
