Know Theatre of Cincinnati Premieres DIE HARD IS A CHRISTMAS MOVIE by Local Writers, A.J. Baldwin & Alexx Rouse

This new holiday comedy runs December 6-22, 2024

This holiday season, one family will risk it all to make it to Christmas morning together… or die hard trying.

Christmas Eve, 1988. Mack’s literary star is on the rise (but his marriage is on the rocks) when he returns home to celebrate the holiday with his family. In an effort to reignite their parents’ romance, the teenage kids enact a plan to make Dad a hero again, but when late night intruders kidnap Mom, Mack and the kids embark on a Sweettart and adrenaline-fueled adventure to save their family.

DIE HARD IS A CHRISTMAS MOVIE is a spoof-parody of the 1988 blockbuster hit “Die Hard,” by local comedy writers A.J. Baldwin & Alexx Rouse. It’s the 50th Anniversary of THE NUTCRACKER in Cincinnati

Audiences will experience new costumes and choreography that celebrate diversity,
Dec. 19-29 at Music
Hall

CINCINNATI, OH (November 20, 2024) – Cincinnati Ballet’s The Nutcracker presented by Sheakley Family returns to Music Hall. The Company is celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Nutcracker in Cincinnati. The Company first performed the holiday classic in 1974 under Artistic Director David McLain and for the first time in many years, will feature shows after Christmas. The production remains in high demand, with few seats remaining for several shows. This grand production features elaborate sets and costumes and live musical accompaniment of Tchaikovsky’s beloved score by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, with choreography from Victoria Morgan.

This year’s production also features changes to reflect the diversity of our community thanks to a gift from Bank of America. Cincinnati Ballet created new heads for the Nutcracker character that represent diverse skin tones. Victoria Morgan has also reimagined choreography for the divertissement Coffee (the dance traditionally known as Arabian) to be more mindful of cultural sensitivities. In addition, the wigs worn by dancers now will include wigs that represent different hair types. This project was also funded in part by Cincinnati Parks Foundation, which also partnered by the Ballet on a special Nutcracker-themed nature hike in Smale Riverfront Park, November 30 through December 31.

This holiday season Cincinnati Ballet is also thrilled to be collaborating with Washington Park, the City of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC), DANCEFIX and the Art Academy of Cincinnati to bring a Nutcracker-inspired Winter Wonderland installation to Washington Park this December. The installation presented by Cincinnati Ballet will be a story walk with six scenes created by students from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, in addition to dazzling holiday lights on park trees, along paths, and surrounding the bandstand. The story walk will be viewable from December 1-31, with a special event at the opening of the story walk on December 1 with ballet dancers, Santa Claus, a performance by DANCEFIX, family-friendly activities and more.

Victoria Morgan’s The Nutcracker premiered in 2011 with new sets by scenic designer John Ezell, bright and beautiful costumes by Carrie Robbins, lighting by Trad A Burns and athletic, engaging choreography by Victoria Morgan. Morgan’s rendition of the classical ballet is filled with unique, contemporary twists on longstanding traditions: from the bright, whimsical sets, stage effects and acrobatics to the appearance of new, playful characters such as Clara’s companion, a pet poodle named Minnie, dancing Cupcakes, tumbling Snowballs, an ensemble of poodles performing the Dance of the Mirlitons (or “Lollipups”). Morgan’s whimsical choreographic take on the classic story is like nothing you have ever seen before.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL Returns to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Nov. 22

PIP_A Christmas Carol 2024 2CINCINNATI (Nov. 19, 2024) – The timeless tradition of A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Charles Dickens returns to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park beginning Nov. 22 in Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre with the official opening performance on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. and a new sensory friendly/relaxed performance on Dec. 27. Presented by First Financial Bank, the show runs through Dec. 29.

Talkin’ Broadway called the premiere production in 2023, which sold out all shows, “a showcase of local talent, a demonstration of the possibilities of the Playhouse’s new mainstage and a welcome addition that’s likely to become part of Cincinnati’s holiday tradition for years to come. No humbug – just joy to the world!” The Cincinnati Enquirer said it was “gorgeous” and “there is much to love in this celebratory production.”

A CHRISTMAS CAROL takes full advantage of The Rouse Theatre’s state-of-the-art capabilities, with a dazzling set, costumes and lighting and sound designs that recreate Victorian London. Towering above the set is a working clock tower that is an exact replica of London’s Big Ben, and at 20 feet wide and 12 feet long, is just three feet smaller than the actual clock.

“This is our 32nd year telling Dickens’ classic tale about the curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge. It is one of the world’s most celebrated stories, and our production at the Playhouse is no exception,” stated Blake Robison, Osborn Family Producing Artistic Director, who adapted and originally directed the new production. “It reminds us to look at the world around us and understand the needs and struggles of others. It inspires me to open my heart just a little bit wider, and that it’s never too late for a meaningful act of kindness.”

The new production is true to Dickens’ story, with famous lines audiences will remember as well as new scenes from the original novella. According to Bridget Leak, this season’s director of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, “Dickens’ text is timeless because its message is so simple and enduring. It’s a story about redemption, a lesson: it’s never too late. And that message resonates as profoundly whether it’s coming from Albert Finney or Fozzie Bear. Our family traditions are a shorthand for love. They anchor and center us.”

In addition to directing A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Leak is also newly appointed Producing Artistic Director of Know Theatre and a resident artist at the Playhouse as Co-Founder/Director of Queen City Flash. Andrew May returns as Ebenezer Scrooge, leading 23 cast members with new and familiar faces and six child actors. A CHRISTMAS CAROL is suitable for all general audiences, including children ages 5 and older.
