MARIE AND ROSETTA Runs March 3-31

pip_marie-and-rosetta-promoMARIE AND ROSETTA
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
March 3-31
Marx Theatre [Eden Park]

Directed by Neil Pepe

Celebrated for her fierce guitar playing and swinging gospel music, singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe became a veritable legend — and a 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Throughout the 1930s and ‘40s, Sister Rosetta performed gospel in the morning and swing music at the Cotton Club at night to inevitably become a major influence on rock ‘n’ roll’s earliest icons. This play with music chronicles her first rehearsal with a young protégée, Marie Knight, as they prepare for a tour that would establish them as one of the great duet teams in musical history. Marie and Rosetta’s compelling life stories combined with roof-raising, heart-rending gospel songs set the stage for an inspiring evening at the theatre. Contains mild adult language and mature themes.

OTHELLO Runs March 2-24

CSC_Othello logoOTHELLO
Cincinnati Shakespeare Company
March 2-24
[Over-the-Rhine]

Directed by Christopher V. Edwards

Although a Moor and an outsider in Venice, Othello’s military prowess has earned him the respect of many—and the seething animosity of one. Othello’s long-time underling Iago is resentful of the Moor’s success, and when Othello elopes with a Venetian’s daughter, Iago sets in motion a devious plot to exact revenge. With an insinuation here, a whisper there, and the duplicitous deployment of a purloined handkerchief, he masterfully plays on the virtues and vulnerabilities of those around him, weaving with Machiavellian glee “the net that shall enmesh them all.”
