The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s production of THE VELVETEEN RABBIT

TCT_Velveteen Rabbit Costume Rendering The Velveteen Rabbit

Velveteen Rabbit Costume Rendering.

Featuring IN PERSON and online performances starting next week

CincinnatiWhen The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati kicks off its 101st season next week, it may look and feel a bit different. But the company is thrilled to have the opportunity to continue creating life-long memories through its award-winning MainStage productions with both in-person, socially-distanced, LIVE performances, as well as digitally streaming shows to watch at home or at school through the online service, Broadway On Demand.

Starting November 12, THE VELVETEEN RABBIT, Margery Williams’ award-winning classic tale of a stuffed toy rabbit made real by a child’s enduring love will be retold in a modern and delightfully electric holiday musical staged live for audiences on TCT’s Ralph and Patricia Corbett Showtime Stage on Red Bank Road. The show will begin streaming for home and school audiences on Broadway On Demand the following weekon November 19.

In an era of virtual reality and Minecraft, this musical captures the joy and magic of the book children and adults know and love, with a 16-bit digital twist designed to get the entire family into the spirit of the season.

TCT’s version of The Velveteen Rabbit is set within the high-tech concept of virtual reality. We live in a world of computers, smart phones, Zoom meetings, and gaming systems. Through these digital experiences, a child’s imagination can be exercised in ways we never imagined before, said Roderick Justice, Producing Artistic Director and director of the stage production. “Virtual reality unlocks potential and draw parallels to what is real and what had the potential to be real.”

Mr. Justice adds, “The Velveteen Rabbit is a poetic lesson in a child’s ability to love. Children are often thrust into the same situations in which our Velveteen Rabbit finds himself. They can be made to feel insecure and inadequate, or not quite “real” when bullied or teased by others. Children are often left alone with their thoughts, worries, and vivid imaginations to fill in the blanks.”

In-person seating will be limited to 30% (or 44 seats) per performance. Demand is high and performances are expected to sell out quickly — some are already filled.

The TCT Team has been working diligently to create and debut new safety protocols to protect the audience, staff, and the actors on stage. Most exciting are specially designed nose and mouth coverings integrated into the costumes by Resident Costume Designer, Jeff Shearer, and pre-recorded vocal amplification used to reduce the amount of respiration created by actors in the theater during a performance.

“The health and well-being of our audience, students, and staff have been and always will be our top priority, said Kim Kern, TCT’s Managing Director and CEO. “In April, we assembled a committee of advisors, health professionals, and community leaders to guide our safety protocols. Through their constant guidance, we receive the most up-to-date information, implement strategies early, and continue to go above and beyond CDC, state, and local guidelines to keep everyone safe, happy, healthy, and creative.”

At all in-person shows, mandatory masks for the audience, as well as social distancing, will be required. For complete health and safely protocols, visit https://thechildrenstheatre.com/2020/08/safety-protocols/.

Live performances on TCT’s Ralph and Patricia Corbett’s Showtime Stage on Red Bank Road will take place Thursdays and Fridays at 7pm, Saturdays at 11am, 2pm, and 5pm, and Sundays at 2pm and 5pm November 12 through December 13. (Please note: shows will not take place the week of November 23 due to the Thanksgiving holiday.)

Tickets and digital passes are on sale now. For details visit www.thechildrenstheatre.com. Ticket prices for live performances range from $25 to $30 per ticket.

With the help of Macy’s as Virtual Production Sponsor, digital performances begin on Broadway on Demand on November 19. The presale price for a digital pass is $15.95. This presale price is only available until the production debuts online. After that time, digital passes are $18.95. Digital passes provide unlimited viewing over three days, which begin after the first view.

Video Auditions Announced for HOME THEATRE at American Legacy Theatre

ALT_logoHome Theatre is a totally new approach to theatre never before seen in America and launching in the beginning of 2021. This approach will create 30 world premieres in 6 months.

Acting artists will meet 1:1 with community individuals and perform a 45-60 minute one-person show inspired by and cultivated from the 1:1 session. Acting artists will leverage the acquired techniques and process taught to them by American Legacy Theatre, and create alongside a director and up to five other artists working on their own production.

Need: American Legacy Theatre is seeking to hire a diverse unit of at least six (6) acting artists 3m, 3f of all ethnicities, races, and ages. The goal is that at least half of the 30 world premieres are based upon a person of color.

AUDITION FORMAT

  • Watch the video interview provided on their official page.
  • Create a 90-120 second piece inspired by the interview
  • Follow provided guidelines

Pay: $250/one-week production

Submissions Due: November 8, 2020 at 11:59pm

Possible Callbacks: Week of November 16-20

Learning Technical Process: December 2020 – January 2021. This will likely be done over four weeks. Presently this learning process is unpaid, but all acting artists successfully completing the training will be guaranteed at least one one-week production.

Rehearsal Weeks & Performances: Acting artists will be assigned to community members based upon request and need February – June 2021.

NOTE: Acting artists will not work every week, so availability and flexibility are important on both A.L.T.’s end and the acting artist. Some acting artists may do seven productions while others may only do three.  Also due to the health and safety concerns during COVID-19, this program may exist solely in a digital medium, though potentially in-person depending on the state of the pandemic.

GUIDELINES

  1. Your piece must contain a verbatim moment from the interview.
  2. Your piece must have a beginning, middle, and end.
  3. Your piece must include one external production element: prop, lighting, etc.
  4. Your piece must include a minimum of two characters with clear definitive character choices.
  5. Your piece must be a minimum of 90 seconds and not exceed 120 seconds (2 minutes).

DAISY Quick Review

DAISY presented by Falcon Theatre is available online through Nov. 7.

FT_Daisy promo

DAISY chronicles the beginnings of the fear-mongering advertising that has become such a staple of our political discourse.

From Wikipedia:

Daisy“, sometimes known as “Daisy Girl” or “Peace, Little Girl“, was a controversial political advertisement aired on television during the 1964 United States presidential election by incumbent president Lyndon B. Johnson’s campaign. Though only officially aired once by the campaign, it is considered to be an important factor in Johnson’s landslide victory over Barry Goldwater and an important turning point in political and advertising history. It remains one of the most controversial political advertisements ever made.

The script by Sean Devine is interesting and disturbing in equal measure and does debate the ethical ramifications of this new approached to political advertising. Multiple themes of today are echoed in the events of almost 65 years ago.

Director Tara Williams has assembled a solid ensemble to bring these characters to life. Jay Dallas Benson as Sid Myers and David Levy as Tony Schwartz did well in creating fully realized characters. There were several times however when the emotions of the scene and the interaction of the characters did not quite ring true for me. In part because the actors were not performing at the same energy level.

In the press release for Daisy, Williams describes the performance as a “television/theater hybrid” in the vein of CBS’ Playhouse 90 from 60 years ago and I think that concept worked well in the filming. Given the limitations imposed by the pandemic on both cast and crew, and the typical budget of a staged performance, Falcon has done a great job of finding locations, costumes and props to establish the time period and atmosphere of the piece (with much support from our local arts community).

Understanding that this is new territory, and as with anything new there is a bit of a learning curve, if your organization pursues another production in this format I would mention a few things: The staging did become a bit stagnant with actors sitting/standing in the same spot for extended periods of time. While the play area is confined, there are opportunities to stand, sit, lean forward, or shift body angle to give some energy to the scene. Normally on stage there is a concern with peripheral characters stealing focus in a scene but with filing and all the actors being in the shot, the characters need to be a bit more present and reactive in the scene.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this timely play to life in these unprecedented time.

My rating: 4.25 out of 5.
