Auditions Announced for Vocal Arts Ensemble of Cincinnati

The Vocal Arts Ensemble of Cincinnati and Music Director Joe Miller invite singers to audition for VAE’s 2025-2026 season. All interested singers must audition, regardless of previous affiliation with VAE. Auditions will consist of a pre-screening application and a live, in-person audition. Pre-screening applications are due via online submission by March 1. 2025 at 11:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Singers advancing from the pre-screening round will be invited to live, in-person auditions in Cincinnati on March 29 and 30, 2025. Vocal Arts Ensemble of Cincinnati will not be providing travel and/or housing support for the in-person audition.

Applicants must submit two contrasting pieces in at least two languages, one of which must be English. One selection must be a baroque or classical aria or art song. In addition to these pieces, applicants will submit a “sing and play” video (see instructions below).

Please note the following guidelines before submitting:

  1. All videos must be recorded within the past 12 months.
  2. Videos should be accompanied by a pianist or recorded piano track (not including the “sing and play”).
  3. Each video should be one unedited, continuous take. Do not combine multiple recording sessions or use audio enhancement/editing.
  4. Videos should be uploaded to a file sharing service of your choice (Google Drive, YouTube, Dropbox, etc.) and a sharing link provided. Video links must not be password protected or private. Links may be unlisted but should not require a password. Please verify that videos work before submitting. You can find a guide for sharing settings here.
  5. Sing and play video: Video record the selection. Please begin at square 45 and sing through the end of the excerpt. You should sing your part and play one of the other parts at the same time, making sure to be consistent in the lines you are singing.  For example, if you are singing tenor and playing bass, you should continue with these parts throughout and not change to playing another part.  Please note that you should not play the part that you are singing.  Please follow all of the instructions in the score. Click here to view the score. The video should be filmed in one unedited, continuous take.

Please complete the pre-screen audition form: Click here to access the pre-screen audition form.

ASSASSINS is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by John Weidman, based on an original concept by Charles Gilbert, Jr. Using the framing device of an all-American, yet sinister, carnival game, the semi-revue portrays a group of historical figures who attempted (successfully or not) to assassinate Presidents of the United States and explores what their presence in American history says about the ideals of their country. The score is written to reflect both popular music of the various depicted eras and a broader tradition of “patriotic” American music.
