The Footlighters, Inc., Kicks Off Its 60th Anniversary Season with The Mel Brooks Musical YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN

FLI_Young FrankensteinNEWPORT, KY — “IT’S ALIVE!” Join the Frankenstein family business in this gut-busting musical comedy filled with abby-normal brains, tap-dancing monsters, and laughs of monstrous proportions as The Footlighters, Inc., presents The Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein as the first show of its 60th anniversary season, based on Mel Brooks’ famous movie of the same name.

Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor, and a leggy lab assistant, Inga, Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. “It’s alive!” he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously aboundsin this monstrously funny musical from comedic genius Mel Brooks. You’ll be rolling in the hay from laughter!

Veteran award-winning actor and longtime Footlighters Board member and stalwart Chuck Ingram busts out his platform boots and reprises his role as The Monster in Young Frankenstein after first portraying the iconic character in Cincinnati Music Theatre’s 2014 production. Chuck’s Footlighters debut was the 2009 production of 1776, which also featured his son—the first of many shows where he would share the stage with members of his family. In fact, the Ingrams have made Footlighters a “family affair,” with Chuck treading the boards with his wife and daughters in 2016’s How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and 2019’s Mamma Mia!

  • Thursday – Saturday, September 14 – 16 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, September 17 at 2:00 p.m.
  • Thursday – Saturday, September 21 – 23 at 7:30 p.m.

  • Sunday, October 1 at 2:00 p.m.

In 1987, the group bought the Salem United Methodist Church in Newport and transformed it into The Stained Glass Theatre. The theater is on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated a Kentucky landmark. In September of 2021, Footlighters completed the third and final phase of their accessibility project by adding ADA-compliant seating in their theater to complement the ADA ramp and elevator installed in 2017 and 2018, allowing access for all patrons with limited mobility.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM Runs Aug. 18-20

SISP_Midsummer Nights DreamA MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
Shakespeare in South Park
Aug. 18-20
South Park Green [Dayton]

Directed by Jene Rebbin Shaw

Cast: Galen Wilson as Theseus, Duke of Athens, Susan Robert as Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, his bride, Elizabeth Horner as Philostrate, John Wysong as Egeus, Maura Piroch as Helena, Mary Beringer as Hermia, Chris Petree as Lysander, Benjamin Hedrick as Demetrius, Ray Geiger as Oberon, King, Kelly Johnson as Titania, Queen, Amelia Merithew as Puck, Oberon’s servant, Heather Atkinson as First Fairy, Phyllis Tonne as Second Fairy/Musician, Erin Bailey as Peaseblossom, Cindy Myers as Cobweb, Ruthey Schultz as Moth, Amanda Korb as Mustardseed, Athenian workmen, Wayne Wolfe as Peter Quince, a would-be playwright, David Meadows as Nick Bottom, a weaver, Marcus McCarty-Towers as Francis Flute, a bellows-mender, Caleb Boquist as Snug, a joiner, Scott Randolph as Tom Snout, a tinker & Raymond Goerig as Robin Starveling, a tailor

William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is made up of several interlocking plotlines, particularly the convoluted love story of Hermia, Helena, Lysander, and Demetrius, and the disagreement between the fairy king Oberon and his queen Titania. Connecting these two storylines is Puck, Oberon’s mischievous fairy jester, who drives much of the action of the play. The frame narrative of Theseus’ marriage to Hippolyta in Athens is important, as its orderliness provides a contrast to the chaotic forest where magic reigns and the expected is constantly subverted.
