[Over-the-Rhine]

CSC’s holiday smash hit Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!) is back again for another season of holiday hilarity! What begins as another annual production of A Christmas Carol, soon devolves into a slightly irreverent look at all of our favorite “Beloved Holiday Classics” including pop culture favorites like It’s a Wonderful Life, Rudolph, Charlie Brown and more! Add in topical references that always keep this annual tradition fresh and fun as we send up everything from Dickens to Dr. Seuss for 90+ minutes of high octane jollity and frivolity.

World Premiere NEED YOUR LOVE Adds New Musical Chapters in the Life of R&B Singer Little Willie John

Follow-Up to the Hugely Popular CINCINNATI KING Begins Oct. 30

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park continues its season with a second world premiere: NEED YOUR LOVE by writer-director KJ Sanchez. The production, beginning Oct. 30 continues the unforgettable story of R&B singer Little Willie John, the King Records star who was first featured in the 2018 world premiere production Cincinnati King. Made possible thanks to support from the Rosenthal Family Foundation, NEED YOUR LOVE runs through Dec. 12. Official opening night is Thursday, Nov. 4.

With live performances of “Fever,” “My Love Is,” “Shakin'” and “Need Your Love So Bad,” the musical docudrama will please audiences who enjoy R&B renditions of some of music’s greatest songs as will fans of prior shows like Cincinnati King, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, Million Dollar Quartet and Low Down Dirty Blues.

“From the first day of auditions for Cincinnati King, we could tell that Little Willie John was going to be an exciting character, and then our first preview proved how much the audience was connected with him — especially when he sang!” Sanchez says. “There was always a deep interest in Willie, and I always had a passion for spreading the word about his brilliance.”

Like Cincinnati King, NEED YOUR LOVE features an onstage band for John’s musical performances. Musicians Richard Livingston Huntley, Ralph Huntley and Cincinnati’s own Terrell Montgomery return for musical accompaniment along with Joel Greenberg. Richard Livingston Huntley also returns as Music Director.

“The story of Little Willie John is so powerful and compelling, and his music is so engrossing and current that I’m very excited to be able to share his music and story with more people,” says Livingston Huntley.

In addition to the music, NEED YOUR LOVE tells the story of Little Willie John’s childhood in Detroit, how he got his first record with Syd Nathan’s King Records, and much more about his time and life before his tragic death at age 30, including stories from his sister, Mable John, who Sanchez interviewed for the play.

“He was one of the finest singers to have ever lived. He could sing anything, and he should still be alive today,” says Sanchez, who noted his performances inspired the likes of James Brown.

Sanchez began writing NEED YOUR LOVE when the Black Lives Matter movement swept across social media in 2020, and she thought of his own life cut short – with songs unsung and stories untold – resulting in a production that’s relevant to our lives today.

“Each and every day we should be asking, what are we doing with our talent? What are we passionate about? How do we honor those that have fallen between the cracks? Who tells our story?” Sanchez explains.

Cincinnati Opera Announces Five-Year Contract Extension for Evans Mirageas

Cincinnati, Ohio—Cincinnati Opera today announced a five-year contract extension for Evans Mirageas, the company’s Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director. The executive committee of Cincinnati Opera’s board of trustees approved the extension earlier this month, and the decision was shared today at the company’s October board meeting.

Mirageas was first engaged by Cincinnati Opera as Artistic Advisor in January 2005 and, following an international search, he was named Artistic Director in July 2005. With the current extension, Mirageas will continue as The Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director through the 2027 season, during which time he will shape Cincinnati Opera’s artistic vision in partnership with Christopher Milligan, The Harry Fath General Director & CEO, along with the Opera’s board and staff.

“Through his collaborative leadership and outstanding reputation within our industry, Evans has helped to elevate Cincinnati Opera’s profile on the international cultural stage,” said Liz Kathman Grubow, president of Cincinnati Opera’s board of trustees. “It’s rare to find an artistic leader who has both an encyclopedic knowledge of the art form as well as a genuine passion for creating authentic connections with our community. In Evans, we’re lucky to have both, and I’m thrilled he will continue on in his role.”

“I’m convinced that Evans would succeed as the artistic leader of any opera company in the world, but we’re fortunate that he’s here at Cincinnati Opera,” added Milligan. “He is a tireless advocate for the company, an enthusiastic champion for our art form, and an outstanding colleague.”

Since his appointment in 2005, Mirageas has helped to establish Cincinnati Opera as a prime cultural destination by advocating for the commissioning and presentation of new and rarely produced operas and engaging internationally renowned singers and creative artists. Mirageas’s commitment to new works extends to his role as co-director—along with Robin Guarino, professor of opera at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM)—of Opera Fusion: New Works, a dynamic partnership between Cincinnati Opera and CCM that supports the development of new American operas. Beyond the mainstage, Mirageas has deepened the company’s connection to the Greater Cincinnati community through unique programmatic partnerships with cultural, civic, religious, and educational organizations across the region. He has also overseen the releases of two commercial recordings of Cincinnati Opera world premiere productions, Fellow Travelers (2017) and Blind Injustice (2021).

“It is an honor and a privilege to continue working with Cincinnati Opera,” said Mirageas. “In my first sixteen seasons, we’ve presented world-class grand opera, building on a legacy that began more than one hundred years ago. We’ve championed existing contemporary works and have become a national leader in our profession for shepherding new pieces to the stage. We’ve weathered an international financial crisis and produced during a pandemic. All those successes and resiliency could not have been accomplished without my colleagues, our artistic partners, our board of trustees, and our generous patrons.”

Continued Mirageas, “I began my tenure working closely with General Director & CEO Patty Beggs, and now I am privileged to work with her successor, Chris Milligan. Our volunteer and executive leadership is acknowledged to be the best in the business, and I am excited about the plans already in place for these next six seasons. Watch this space for a true Cincinnati combination of innovation, community connection, and artistic excellence in everything we present.”
