Family Fun Series Continues at the Arts Center at Dunham on Feb. 1

PIP_Stuart Little logoEmbark on an adventure as Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park brings its Off the Hill touring production of E.B. White’s endearing classic, STUART LITTLE, to the Arts Center at Dunham. This charming adaptation follows the marvelous maneuverings of a mouse in New York City who is trying to survive in the great, big world. The performance is Saturday, Feb.1st at 2pm.

STUART LITTLE is widely recognized as a classic in children’s literature. In the Playhouse’s production, Stuart escapes from a ferocious dog, protects his friend from their devious pet cat and wins a model boat race at Central Park. Approaching every obstacle with confidence and courage, Stuart teaches us, as he says in the show, that “size has nothing to do with it. It’s temperament and ability that count and knowing what’s important.”

STUART LITTLE explores the themes of “difference, friendship, family, loyalty and adventure,” explains Director Dee Anne Bryll. “When Stuart goes in search of his friend, Margalo, he suddenly becomes aware of the challenges of his size. However, he doesn’t let that stop him…He embraces the many different experiences, people and animals that he meets along his journey.”

Recommended for grades K and up, but all ages welcome!

CINCINNATI:  The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (TCT) has been approved for a $10,000 Art Works grant to support the current season of TCT On Tour.  This project will help TCT on Tour productions take the magic of live theatre to those who would otherwise be unable to attend, due to transportation, geographic and/or financial constraints.  Reaching almost 70,000 children and families per year TCT On Tour productions are selected with state and national educational standards in mind. Shows explore historical events, celebrate cultural heritage, and set the stage for learning. Each 45-50 minute production can fit in most venues from large theaters to school gymnasiums to libraries. We arrive in a van complete with sets, costumes, props and technical equipment. Each show concludes with a question-and-answer session with the cast.

Overall, the National Endowment for the Arts has approved 1,187 grants totaling $27.3 million in the first round of fiscal year 2020 funding to support arts projects in every state in the nation, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

The Art Works funding category supports projects that focus on public engagement with, and access to, various forms of excellent art across the nation; the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence; learning in the arts at all stages of life; and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life.

“The arts are at the heart of our communities, connecting people through shared experiences and artistic expression,” said Arts Endowment chairman Mary Anne Carter. “The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support projects like The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s TCT On Tour productions.”

TCT’s Managing Director and CEO, Kim Kern, said, “We are extremely grateful to have received our first ever grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.  As a nonprofit performing arts organization, we rely heavily on support in the form of grant funding, and are so thankful that the NEA sees the value in our mission and is willing to support us, the country’s oldest professional theater for young audiences.”

In celebration of the 100-year anniversary of Women’s Suffrage, TCT On Tour’s 2019-20 touring season is dedicated to great women in life, literature, history and art. One of the productions which TCT commissioned is entitled Suffragettes: With Liberty and Voting for All. Production synopsis: “In 2020, the nation will the celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in the United States – the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote. Experience the empowering history of the brave women who made triumphant strides through sacrifice and determination. Through story and song, learn about the great gift these women left us – an empowering heritage of pride, momentum and purpose. From 1920 to today, these women are a constant source of strength and inspiration.”  Other titles include: Mrs. Claus Saves the Day (developed work), Coretta Scott King (commissioned work), Harriet Tubman: Straight Up Outta’ The Underground (developed work), Dorothy In Oz (adaptation) and Cinderella Wore Cowboy Boots (developed work).

BUDDY: The Buddy Holly Story Quick Review

BUDDY: The Buddy Holly Story presented by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park through Feb. 16. I attended the opening night performance.

“Your father would have loved this show.”

Andy Christopher as Buddy Holly. Photo by Mikki Schaffner Photography.

This was one of the first things my Mom said to me following the opening night performance. My parents were slightly younger contemporaries of the bespectacled rock and roller. And I totally blame my father (or more specifically his singles record collection that I played through dozens of time as a child) and the family-watched TV show Sha Na Na (love you Pamela Myers) for my appreciation of ’50s and ’60s music.

PIP_Buddy5

Ryan Jagru as Ritchie Valens.

Buddy Holly is “considered one of the most influential creative forces in early rock and roll.” Playhouse’s program features quotes from rock legends Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Elton John, Eric Clapton and Bruce Springsteen to name a few, about his impact on their music.

With its thin book, BUDDY is more tribute show than traditional jukebox musical. The story follows Holly’s struggle to have his music studio-recorded his way, to his groundbreaking performance at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater, to his final Winter Dance Party Tour show in Clear Lake, Iowa before his tragic death at 22.

PIP_Buddy4

Spiff Wiegand as Joe B. Mauldin & Andy Christopher as Buddy Holly. Photo by Mikki Schaffner Photography.

The cast consists of seven talented musicians and vocalists. Led by Andy Christopher in the title role (and serving as Music Director for the production) they rock the Marx Theatre, expertly performing more than 20 of Holly’s hits with great energy and showmanship that had the audience bobbing in their seats and clapping along.

A highly entertaining production for any Buddy Holly fan. Mom was right, Dad would have loved it.

There is a half-price special available for Tue-Fri and Sunday evening performances. Use promo code 2020fam at checkout, www.cincyplay.com/productions/buddy-the-buddy-holly-story.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5.
