Course Description:
A contemporary acting workshop that begins with group/ensemble work and continues into scene study using cutting edge contemporary scripts. A fantastic opportunity to hone your acting skills while getting a glimpse of what’s new in American Theatre! The class meets for six 2.5 hour sessions, with an invited performance for the final session on Know Theatre’s Underground cabaret stage.

Course Description:
Podcasting is a new and growing field! Travis McElroy has worked professionally as a Podcaster for the last 7 years and would like to pass on the benefit of his experience to you. Podcasting 101 will focus on topics like picking the right equipment for you, editing, pre/post-production, social media engagement, iTunes/other platforms, and a whole lot more! You will leave this class with all tools and knowledge you need to launch your own Podcast!

The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra Remembers WKRP IN CINCINNATI at Devou Park

7:30 p.m. Saturday, September 2, Devou Park, Covington

The KSO closes its 23rd Summer Series with a combination of local lore and sit-com nostalgia. Between 1978-82 opening shots of Cincinnati (the skyline, downtown street scapes, the River, Fountain Square) rolled across the nation’s television screens each week in the opening of the 30-minute comedy about a fictitious radio station in the Queen City. Music heard on the show offered a combination of contemporary rock
(Toto, Bob Seger, Queen), R&B (Michael Jackson, The Pointer Sisters, O’Jays) and pop hits (Debby Boone, Herb Alpert) which often provided commentary on the comedy bits and situations. Given the KSO’s predilection for authentically covering nostalgic pop music with its studio orchestra, long-time Enquirer television/radio journalist, John Kieswetter suggested the WKRP theme idea.

WKRP IN CINCINNATI aired on CBS (1978-82) and was created by Hugh Wilson based upon his experiences and the people he encountered working in sales at a Top 40 radio station in Atlanta (Wilson also wrote the theme song lyrics). The ensemble cast included Gary Sandy, Howard Hessman, Gordon Jump, Loni Anderson, Tim Reid, Jan Smithers, Richard Sanders and Frank Bonner. Like many other MTM productions (Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Lou Grant etc), humor came from running gags based on the biases and quirks of each character. Though the show centered on the hilarious antics of the dysfunctional radio station’s staff, WKRP occasionally dabbled in serious issues and drama, like the Who concert tragedy.

“With Labor Day weekend family traditions I thought the WKRP idea sounded kinda fun,” remarked KSO Music Director James Cassidy. “After all everybody remembers that show, right? I remember coming to a board meeting in March announcing that the KSO’s summer finale will be a WKRP in Cincinnati show, to which the over-50 group nodded their approval, while the 30-ish members asked “What is WKRP?” Ouch! Thank goodness much of the music heard on the show is timeless.

Join Music Director James Cassidy, the KSO’s Boogie Band and area vocalists at the amphitheater in Devou Park, Saturday, September 2 at 7:30 p.m. Dress like your favorite WKRP character and maybe give the theme song a little Car Pool Karaoke treatment on the way to the park. Bring blankets or lawn chairs and picnic or visit the KSO concession kiosk. Also don’t forget the TANK Park & Ride Shuttle running from Covington Catholic to the band shell from 6:00 -7:30 p.m., and after the concert for $1 each way.

Auditions Announced for FAITH at the Irish American Theatre Company

When: Sept. 13 from 6-8pm and Sept. 14 from 6:30-8pm

Where: 3905 Eastern Ave Cincinnati, OH 45226

Who: 2m, 1f (18+), and stage manager

How: Cold readings from supplied scripts. Please wear comfortable clothing and any reading aids you may require.

Performance: January 19-21, March TBA, This play will be our entry into the Acting Irish International Theatre Festival. Original cast will be encouraged to travel to Calgary, Canada in May.

A new play from Irish playwright, Paul Meade. This riveting play explores themes with middle age, depression, and vulnerability.

Synopsis
The play focuses on a comically dysfunctional family, made up of the parents Beth and Christopher and three grown children living at home, Daniel, Ruth and Billy, the last of whom is deaf, raised to read lips and speak but without knowledge of sign language. When Billy meets Sylvia, a hearing woman born to deaf parents who is now slowly going deaf herself, his interaction with her (including her teaching him sign language) reveals some of the languages, beliefs, and hierarchies of the family and the “extended family” of the deaf community.

Characters

  • Billy (20-30) is deaf since birth. Brought up Oral. Wears hearing aids. He meets Sylvia who teaches him to sign, opening him up to a world he never knew before. He is sheltered, considerate, and a gentle spirit.

  • Sylvia (20-30) was born with hearing but now rapidly going deaf. While she hasn’t wanted to let someone in, she falls for Billy. While Billy might see her as a vibrant new light in his life, the rest of the family sees her as “nice and funny”. Experience with ASL is a requirement and experience with the piano is a plus.

  • Daniel (25-35) is Billy and Ruth’s brother, a pothead, emotional, and uncomfortable with change. He has always defined himself in reference to being Billy’s big brother. Once Billy starts to find himself, Daniel is unable to cope with the loss and his depression and childhood stutter return.

  • Christopher (50-65) is Billy, Ruth and Daniel’s father. He would probably like to think of himself as liberal or at the very least “open-minded”, but in reality things are very black and white to him. He’s a writer and an academic. He loves his children, but wants all of them to be things they aren’t. He has spurned the deaf community.

  • Beth (50-60) is the wife of Christopher and mother to Billy, Ruth & Daniel. She is sensitive and empathetic to the complexities of her children’s lives, but oblivious to the real issues. She enjoys having adult children whom she can relate to, but she could have possibly always treated them as adults. She is attempting to redefine herself as a mystery writer.

  • Ruth (25-35) is Billy’s older sister. Like the rest of her family, she is struggling with self-identity. She is a typical middle child and is self-aware; perhaps the most self-aware of the entire family (in a way only a 20-something can be). At present she thinks of herself as an opera singer.
