THE PINK HULK: One Woman’s Journey to Find the Superhero Within @ 2017 Cincinnati Fringe Festival

CFF_The Pink Hulk_1x1

Award-winning PINK HULK One-Woman Show Written and
Performed by Valerie David “Hulking It” to the Cincy Fringe

Actor and playwright Valerie David performs her inspiring, comical one-woman show about becoming a two-time cancer survivor. What’s the first thing Valerie does when she’s diagnosed with cancer for a second time in her life? She tries to get laid. Having beaten lymphoma earlier in life, she is now diagnosed with breast cancer. And…does she succeed? Come see the show to find out! This sexy and adventurous solo show follows the triumphant journey of one woman as she finds her own “hulk-like” strength to find her superhero within! A true and inspiring story!

THE PINK HULK: One Woman’s Journey to Find the Superhero Within, written and starring professional actor and playwright Valerie David will be performed in the Cincy Fringe.

David, who has been cancer-free since 2015, wrote the autobiographical comedic drama The Pink Hulk to express the empowerment she felt being able to find humor and superhero inner strength going through two bouts of cancer—first Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and then breast cancer 15 years later. She raises money through The Pink Hulk performances for domestic and international cancer organizations.

“My show is not just about fighting cancer; it has a universal message of fighting back from any adversity in life with its inspirational message of hope and empowerment. I want to help and inspire others through my performances, and The Pink Hulk also has plenty of humor and comedy—guaranteed!” David exclaims. “I’m super excited to bring this show to the amazing Cincy Fringe, and this marks my first time taking the show to Ohio!”

“I have been honored and humbled with the impact this show has had on its audiences, whether or not they have any affiliation with cancer,” she adds. “It has been so special when people have approached me after a performance to say how much they related to The Pink Hulk.” A cancer survivor said, ‘Your show nailed exactly everything I felt when I was going through my own treatment.’ And one gentleman commented, ‘I have never known anyone to have had cancer…either friends or family, but your story had such an impact on me because it was about living life on your own terms. And that really resonated with me and made me feel empowered to do the same.’”

At its world premiere in the Planet Connections Festivity Theatre Festival in New York City this past summer, The Pink Hulk was nominated for Best Performance of a Solo Show, Best Overall Production of a Solo Show, and won Best Director of a Solo Show. It was also awarded a Congeniality Award and Planet Activist Award, raising funds and awareness for Mary’s Place by the Sea, a nonprofit cancer organization in Ocean Grove, NJ. Valerie also received the following award for The Pink Hulk by the 2017 SaraSolo Festival in Sarasota, Florida: Queen’s Medal for Valour, presented to an exceptional performer who brings bravery, grace and humor to extraordinary circumstances. And she also received The Best Survivor Award in the Pittsburgh Fringe 2017.

DANIEL MICHAEL PATRICK (M) – “Danny boy” is an overgrown kid – mentally and emotionally. Twin to DONALD. Revered by thousands as a musician and singer, Danny’s number one fan remains his mother. His public image as the romantic troubadour is the direct opposite of his real nature. Thirties. Same actor may play both Daniel & Donald*. Can you play an instrument?

DONALD FRANCIS PATRICK (M) – Danny’s identical twin and alter ego. Where Danny is slow and cruel, Donald is smart and shy. His one act of rebellion was to marry Maggie – an “American” he met when she vacationed in Ireland. Same actor may play both Donald & Daniel*.

* Daniel & Donald Patrick, the twins are typically played by the same actor.

MAUREEN ROSE PATRICK (F) – Danny’s long-suffering wife and sometime singing partner. A stereo-typical Irish spitfire, Maureen realized almost immediately what a big mistake she’d made in marrying Daniel..

MAGGIE PATRICK (F) – Donald’s American wife and incurable flirt. Maggie appears to take nothing seriously – including her marriage.

MARTIN THOMAS PATRICK (M) – The “baby”, Martin has just been accepted in the seminary as a result of Biddy’s lobbying. Martin is a young man (late teens / twenties)

Being a fellow of rich imagination, he takes it upon himself to help the inmates by putting on a bazaar and showing each of them that one is only as old as he feels. Case in point, the attractive Miss Tripp, in charge of the home and more or less in love with the stuffy Reverend Watson, enters a romance with Erwenter and discovers the true meaning of passion. All goes well until Erwenter is exposed by his tramp companion, Emmett. He and Emmett, having appropriated the necessary equipment for the bazaar from neighboring institutions, are in danger of arrest, but Erwenter persuades his victims that the bazaar is a worthwhile cause and ends up the object of universal praise. Erwenter again feels the call of the road and leaves the home, having finally taught the Reverend to show Miss Tripp how deeply he loves her. Synopsis: FIXATE is a character-driven, psychological thriller, short web series (with the capacity to expand) concerning a group of stalkers trying to stop their obsessive behavior toward others, while among them lurks a serial killer.

Character BIOS:
[Tommy] African American Female, 25-35. Outgoing, bold, defiant, defensive.  Partner to Tina. She can be overbearing towards Tina, but thinks she is acting out of love, overly protective.  She has trouble admitting her behavior is troublesome. Ultimately, she wants to protect Tina and herself from the world and any harm or evil.  She trusts unconditionally, is loyal and tough.  She does not put up with any shit from anyone.

[Tina] Female, 22-30.  Not quite shy, but quiet.  Strong with Tommy, has a bit of timidity with others connected to a secret she is holding from everyone including Tommy.  She is a bit more open toward outsiders and emotionally, can hurt more than Tommy.  More kind-hearted, but less affectionate than Tommy.  Disturbed by both her and Tommy’s stalking compulsion.

[Katie] Female, 25-30.  Seemingly shy, and somewhat to herself, but one not quite succumbing to low self-esteem.  She does not try or want to fool herself.  She desires genuine love, but desires freedom from turmoil more so.  Wonders if possible.  Can come off as cute, though she no longer cares about this.  She is not in denial about her obsession, but has come to an understanding that she can’t stop which saddens her.  Has had a series of bad relationships.  Holds a deep sadness she is caught in this somewhat self-inflicted turmoil and desires mostly freedom from it.  Direct, lightly flirtatious.

[Harlan] Male, 35-40, Caucasian.  Dry, tough, could care less about appearances, private detective, although his clientele are few, mostly unknown.  Able to speak his mind, but does so bitingly.  Holds inside until he can’t.  Unlikely to put up with any shit from anyone.  Often comes off as cruel, seemingly to protect something buried inside.  Socially backward.  His motivation is unclear as to what he is protecting and what he cares about.  Secretly, he is trying to make up for past misdoings and harbors a deep guilt.

[Robert] Male, 30-40.  Confident, almost overly self-assured therapist.  At times intimidating, and unafraid to, but carefully delivers the truth.  Very caring on the outside.  Occasionally he grows tired of being challenged or having his authority questioned.  Married with one child.

[Eddie] Male, 30-35, Caucasian.  Non-confident, intelligent, somewhat shaken, obsessed with his wife and wanting to return to marriage state of bliss he deeply believes in.  Teeters, mostly in a state of denial, unwilling to give up on what has already sailed away. Wonders at the value of life without her, why it could or should ever be this way.

[William] Male, 50.  Prisoner.  Cocksure, biting sarcasm.  Brother to Harlan.  Uses humor to bite and protect himself and is fully aware he does it.  Ambiguous as to why he is in prison, but talks freely of the past, often in a sadistic manner toward his brother.

[Detective One]  Male, 40-55.  Very concerned about what he does.  Experienced enough to know how the world and desires to “fix” it does not always work.  He is not easily fooled, but never had the breaks or education given to him.  He is self-made, self-taught, very intelligent, outgoing, thoughtful, tough and caring.  He worries his younger detective is not intelligent, willing, and open enough to do the job.

[Detective Two]  Male, 25-35.  A bit too cocksure, somewhat of a maverick, thinks he knows more than the world and his partner detective can understand.  He wants to do things his way.  He is not stupid, but walks a line between his cock-sure attitude biting him in the ass and discovery that the world may be too dark and complicated for him to hold his confidence at the level where he operates.  He is not too stupid to understand this.

[Cocky Cop]  Male, 25-30.  Boyfriend to Katie.  Promiscuous, needing his confidence stroked through women.  He doesn’t want to be a complete dick, but can’t stop himself for his need to have his ego stroked.  He is not an idiot.  He wants to do good, but also has an emotional immaturity.  Hero-complex.
