MU_Gruesome Playground InjuriesGRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES
Presented by Miami University
Nov. 20-24
Oxford

Directed by Robert C. Stimmel

Cast: Ryan Knapper as Doug & Meka Clifford as Kayleen

In this masterful piece by Miami alumn Rajiv Joseph, an accident-prone dare devil and a corrosive masochist navigate friendship, love and the squishy parts that lie in between. 8 year olds Doug and Kayleen meet in a school nurse’s office, beginning a lifelong intimacy, revealed through the physical and emotional injuries they sustain over 30 years. Gruesome Playground Injuries tells a different kind of love story through sharp humor and even sharper insights into the human condition.

Based on John Steinbeck’s classic novel of enduring friendship amidst unendurable hardship, panelists lauded it as “near perfect – all the elements of acting, staging, set design and lighting design combined into a thoroughly compelling, emotionally draining (but satisfying) theater experience”….”poignant and accessible.”

Panelists singled out Drew Fracher’s direction for particular praise, “building up our understanding and affection for all these characters as well as the suspense and foreshadowing of the story…with perfect pace and timing.” They also applauded Jim Hopkin’s portrayal of Lenny: “There was not a single misstep in Hopkins’ absolutely believable and sympathetic portrayal of the mentally disabled, physically strong Lenny. I never once doubted that I was experiencing the person, not an actor portraying a character.”

League of Cincinnati Theatre panelists evaluate productions on a 5 star scale and recommend shows at either a 4 star or 5 star level. Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring. www.leagueofcincytheatres.info

OF MICE AND MEN continues through November 10th. Tickets can be purchased at www.cincyshakes.com.

ANNIE, JR., the children’s version of the popular musical favorite depicting the adventures of the plucky comic-book orphan, was described by panelists as enjoyable and “a quick paced show from the first moment to the last.” They singled out the contributions of David Centers (set design) and Kathie Brookfield (costumes), noting that they “continue to be impressed with the overall production quality of the Children’s Theater.” David Center’s set “beautifully captured the deco style” while Kathie Brookfield’s costumes “ranged from rags on the orphans to servants uniforms to business suits for a very large cast”. They also highly praised the “adorable” Allison Edwards as Annie, who was described as having “every bit of the boundless optimism and confident voice” you would expect of the heroine.
