Auditions will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022 at 7 PM and Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 10 AM (and a later date TBD if necessary) at the TCP Playhouse.
No appointment is needed. All roles are open and some roles, such as the butler and inspector, may be of any gender. Please familiarize yourself, if possible, with the scenes for the character you wish to audition for. I
may also have you read from additional scenes depending on how many we have auditioning at that time.
There are several videos on YouTube to view for character study. You will need to complete an audition form and bring it with you to the auditions.
Please note that this is the ONE-ACT version of this play, with a run time of about 75 minutes. We are looking for actors in age range of 18 to 60 (ish). This is a physical comedy and some characters will be stretched to the best of their ability.
Stage Crew: In addition to actors, we will also need talented and dedicated stage crew, lighting, sound, and set building. The set for this production is basically another actor in the show and will require backstage crew to operate the various tricks associated with the play. These positions are as much a part of the play as the actors.
Their inclusion in the rehearsals will extend beyond the traditional “tech week” since many scenes depend on close coordination between actors and crew.
There will be three total performances at the TCP Playhouse: February 3 and 4, 2023 at 7 PM and February 5, 2023 at 2 PM.
Rehearsals: Rehearsals will begin as soon as the cast list is announced. A date and time for the first read through of the script will be sent out to cast members.
All rehearsals will be held at the Mainstreet Playhouse approximately 3-4 nights a week.
Synopsis of Scenes: You all know the classic murder mystery story. There has been an untimely death at a country manor, everyone is a suspect, and an inspector is set on the case to find who the culprit is. However, when this play is performed by the accident-prone thespians of The Cornley Drama Society, everything that can go wrong…does! The actors and crew battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call, with hilarious consequences!
The action takes place on the opening night of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’s production of the murder mystery play Murder at Haversham Manor. The play is performed in one act and is essentially a play within a play.

Characters (in order of appearance):
- Annie, the company’s stage manager. American accent. Annie has a strong technical background but is shy onstage. This changes gradually and drastically as she is forced into certain situations throughout the play.
- Trevor, the company’s lighting and stage manager. American accent. Trevor is only working with the drama society for a course credit and is often easily distracted. He is also thrown into the onstage mayhem later in the play.
- Chris, head of the drama society, director of the play and plays “Inspector Carter – an esteemed local inspector”. A typically perceived “community theatre director”, Chris often knows what should be going on despite the fact that he may not have communicated it effectively to his cast and crew. Gets visibly
frustrated and tries to correct things while performing in the play-within-a-play.
- Jonathan, plays “Charles Haversham – the deceased”. Although he spends most of the play “dead”, he is placed in situations where he must physically adjust his performance to accommodate for the mistakes of others (and of his own). He is also a key component of the play-within-a-play’s epic conclusion.
- Robert, plays “Thomas Colleymoore Charles’ old school friend’”. Robert has a booming stage presence and is concerned with performing his role perfectly while also rolling with the punches and doing his best to compensate for the play-withina-play’s mishaps.
- Dennis, plays “Perkins – Charles’ butler”. Dennis is a very “green” actor who often writes difficult words on his hand and has trouble recovering from the unexpected. He is also very concerned with how the audience reacts to him.
- Max, plays “Cecil Haversham – Charles’ brother”. Max is a true “ham” and thrives off of the audience’s response to his overacting. In spite of his overabundance of confidence, he is typically unwilling to go “all the way” in his romantic scenes with Sandra.
- Sandra, plays “Florence Colleymoore – Charles’ fiancée and Thomas’ sister”. Sandra is the ego-driven leading lady whose actions are exaggerated and whose instincts often miss the mark. She is very protective of her role in the play-withina-play as well as her role in the drama society as the best (that they can get) female performer
