Cast Announced for INSPECTING CAROL at The Drama Workshop

TDW_VERTWe had a lot of very talented people come to the auditions for TDW’s upcoming production of INSPECTING CAROL over the two days. Thank you for sharing your talents with us!

As a director, it’s a good problem to have, as it allows for creation of a better ensemble. On the flip side, talented people who are friends or people with whom I’d like to work are going to end up not being cast, because there are only so many roles. For INSPECTING CAROL, we literally could have cast the show twice, and had excellent casts in both shows.

After determining if somebody *could* be cast or not, the casting process becomes not so much about any individual within a show, but how everybody fits together. Individual talent, once it reaches a certain level, is not as big a factor as the ensemble capabilities. We saw a lot of very good auditions, and they made our choices very tough.

With that, I’m pleased to announce the cast for TDW’s December 2017 production of INSPECTING CAROL:

MJ McMann – Kristy Rucker
Wayne Wellacre – Cameron James Baker
Zorah Bloch – Jody Hart
Sidney Carlton – Dennis Murphy
Dorothy Tree-Hapgood – Carolmarie Stock
Phil Hewlitt – BJ Simpson
Luther Beatty – Joe Hamzy
Walter Parsons – Ivory Mazur
Kevin Emory – Doug Tumeo
Bart Frances – Rick Hunt
Larry Vauxhall – Bill Keeton
Betty Andrews – Amy Sullivan

I cannot wait to see what these people do when we put them all together!

Cast Announced for NATURAL CAUSES at The Drama Workshop

TDW_VERTThe Drama Workshop is very pleased to announce the cast for its upcoming production of NATURAL CAUSES, written by Eric Chappell, directed by Ray Lebowski, and produced by Ray Persing.

We were gratified by the terrific turnout for auditions, and really appreciate everybody taking the time to come out and share their talents with us. Unfortunately, there are only so many roles in any show. Very qualified actors with good auditions, including close friends, sometimes don’t get cast because the ensemble works better with a different choice. Everybody gave great reads, and we’re looking forward to seeing everybody back at a TDW audition very soon!

The cast of NATURAL CAUSES is:

  • Walter Bryce – Eric Thomas
  • Vincent – Jeff Nieman
  • Celia Bryce – Rusty Lacy
  • Angie – Elizabeth Beatty
  • Withers – Glenn Schaich

We are still looking to fill some designer, backstage crew, and front-of-house positions for the show. If you’re interested in helping out, please contact me. Show dates are October 6 through 22.

Congratulations to Eric, Jeff, Rusty, Elizabeth, and Glenn! It’s going to be a great show!

ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE Brings Old-Time Charm to The Drama Workshop

TDW_Always Patsy Cline promo

(Cheviot, OH) The Drama Workshop is thrilled to present the heartwarming musical, ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE opening April 28, and running through May 20. Performances will be at The Glenmore Playhouse in Cheviot. Showtimes are 8 pm on Friday and Saturday evenings, and at 2 pm on Sunday afternoons.

ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE is based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Houston housewife Louise Seger. In 1961 when Cline went to Houston for a show, Seger and her buddies arrived about an hour-and-a-half early and, by coincidence, met Cline who was traveling alone. The two women struck up a friendship that lasted until Cline’s untimely death in a plane crash in 1963.

The musical play, complete with down-home country humor, genuine emotion, and even some audience participation, includes dozens of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Sweet Dreams,” and “Walking After Midnight.” This captivating gem of a show has received glowing praise from audiences across America.

Cynthia Mottel plays Patsy Cline, and says that she was drawn to the role because of Cline’s iconic place in American music. “I was born and raised in the south, and listened to country music most of my life,” Cynthia explained. “Patsy Cline is a woman who broke the barriers that had previously prevented women from entering the music world.  The friendship between Louise and Patsy is told with both humor and emotion with some audience participation, which is not often found in stage productions.”

Jennifer Keith, who portrays Louise, also cited the music and the relationship between the two women as two of her favorite things about the show. “Patsy’s music is timeless and so many people still love it and her,” she said. “The show is humorous and sweet and touching, and the two women have real emotions and a real friendship.”

Director Robert Weidle brimmed with enthusiasm when asked why he thought audiences would enjoy the show. “I believe they will really love the music! The band is wonderful, Jennifer is amazing, and Cynthia’s portrayal of Patsy is nothing short of brilliant!”

To purchase tickets to ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE, please either order online at www.thedramaworkshop.org, or via the 24/7 ticket line at 513.598.8303. Cast Announced for A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM at The Drama Workshop

TDW_VERTThe Drama Workshop is proud to announce the cast for its upcoming production of A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM directed by Dennis Murphy.

Cast members are:

PSEUDOLUS – Joe Penno
HYSTERIUM – Rob Bucher
MARCUS LYCUS – Gary Herman
ERRONIUS – Burt McCollom
SENEX – Chuck Ingram
HERO – Alex Cottle
PHILIA – Gina Stack
DOMINA – Samantha Strain
CAPTAIN MILES GLORIOSUS – Jon Vater
THE PROTEANS – Mark Waldfogle, Adam Drake, Jonny Hofmann
THE COURTESANS – Meagan Blasch, Rachel Kazee, Kaitrin McCoy

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart. The show is a fast-paced farce which combines elements of commedia dell arte, vaudeville and musical comedy into a show that is guaranteed to have audiences rolling in the aisles. Taken straight from the roots of comedy, FORUM combines the characters from the comedies of Plautus with a modern, vaudeville-inspired sensibility.

In FORUM, the slave Pseudolus schemes to win the heart (and body) of the beautiful virgin courtesan Philia for his young master, Hero. In exchange, Hero will grant Pseudolus his heart’s desire: freedom. However, things are never as easy as they seem. Philia is promised to a vain, swaggering solider named Miles Glorious and he’s on his way to claim her. Chaos ensues with hair-brained schemes, cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors and convoluted plot twists. One of the funniest musicals ever written, FORUM boasts a happy, toe tapping score and promises: “something for everyone: a comedy tonight!”

Performance dates are August 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26 at 8:00 PM. August 13, 20, 27 at 2:00 PM.

The Drama Workshop performs at The Glenmore Playhouse, 3716 Glenmore Ave, Cheviot, Ohio, 45211.

Auditions Announced for NATURAL CAUSES at The Drama Workshop

TDW_VERTAUDITIONS for The Drama Workshop’s production of NATURAL CAUSES. Written by Eric Chappell. Directed by Ray Lebowski. Produced by Ray Persing

Auditions will be April 30 and May 1, 2017, at The Glenmore Playhouse, 3716 Glenmore Ave, Cheviot, OH 45211. Doors will open at 6:30pm, and auditions will begin promptly at 7pm. Actors are asked to bring a resume and headshot, and will audition in groups. Auditions will run no later than 9 pm, and may end earlier. Callbacks, if necessary, will be on May 3, 2017. Updates will be posted on the TDW Facebook page. Show dates are October 6, 2017 through October 22, 2017. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 pm, Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. Call time is 1 ½ hours before curtain, unless other arrangements are made with the stage manager. Rehearsals will begin in mid-August.

The director is seeking five actors. Needed: 3 men (40-60) and 2 women (one 40s, one 20s). Performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are encouraged to audition.

ABOUT THE SHOW: Natural Causes is black comedy at its blackest and best. Walter Bryce contacts Vincent, a travelling salesman who trades in a potion designed to help people commit suicide and move painlessly into the next world. He arrives at Walter’s English country house and mistakenly assumes that the potion is for Walter’s consumption. It becomes clear that the client is Celia, Walter’s wife − or is she? Why are all her suicide letters typed and unsigned? After several thwarted attempts to poison various characters (resulting in the multiple poisonings of a rubber plant), will anyone manage to drink the potion?

Vincent (age 35-55) – Undereducated but intelligent. Makes a modest living working for Exodus, dispensing a colorless, odorless, tasteless all-natural liquid which produces a quick (but not instant), painless death. Very professional in his work; deals in death but is not indiscriminate about it. Has ethics, morals, and pride.

Walter Bryce (age 45-60) – A bit condescending but not an out-and- out snob. Not terribly strong-willed. The money that supports his very comfortable lifestyle belongs to his wife, Celia. He’d like to have that money and to spend it with his hot half-his- age secretary.

Angie (age 25-30) – Walter’s secretary and then some. Neither dim nor bright. Daughter of a friend of Celia. Wants Walter, may want more the money he’ll get if Celia snuffs it. Knows which head Walter is thinking with, also knows he is somewhat weak-willed. Clever and manipulative, but not out-and- out evil.

Celia (age 40-55) – Walters wife. Chronically depressed, of the “I can’t go on”, “Is life worth living?” variety. Languid. Constantly threatening to kill herself, but won’t do it because she thinks Walter needs her more. From moneyed folks. Knows nothing about Walter and Angie.

Withers (age 35-plus) – Volunteer for Samaritans, a suicide prevention organization. Married, with children. Buys into and spouts every “life is beautiful” cliché, at least at first.

Actors who are selected will be contacted by the director. The practice of The Drama Workshop is to notify all auditioners via email of results once the show is cast, after which a cast list will be posted on the TDW website and Facebook page. Those without email who are not cast will not be contacted individually.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
Please bring a current headshot & resume. No prepared monologue is required. Auditions will consist of readings from the script. Callbacks, if needed, will be at the director’s discretion. Bring your calendar and be prepared to list all conflicts. Conflicts not listed at time of audition may not be honored. Those who are cast will be expected to assist with the staging, advertising, or some other aspect of the production. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Ray Persing at 937.877.6116 or at trpersing@gmail.com.
