Memorial Hall Celebrates Veteran’s Day with a Free Patriotic Performance & Art Exhibition

memo_logoIN ITS 113TH YEAR, MEMORIAL HALL CELEBRATES VETERANS WITH A FREE PATRIOTIC PERFORMANCE & ART EXHIBITION

Memorial Hall proudly continues its century-long mission of honoring Cincinnati veterans with a special evening of patriotic programming. Visual arts, symphonic music, and history coalesce in an evocative celebration of our armed services.

The 2021 Veterans Day Salute will take place on Thursday, November 11, at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Hall (1225 Elm Street in Over-the-Rhine). This year’s celebration will feature Memorial Hall’s longtime resident wind symphony, the Queen City Concert Band (QCCB) for its eleventh Veterans Salute.

The Veterans Art Exhibition will also be available for viewing on Veterans Day, Thursday November 11, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

All programs are free of charge, though concert reservations are required. Free tickets can be reserved at www.memorialhallotr.com, or by calling the Memorial Hall box office at (513) 977-8838 Tuesday through Friday, 1-6 p.m.

Masks plus proof of vaccination or negative test result within past 72 hours are required. Please read Memorial Hall’s full COVID-19 policies.

The 2021 Veterans Day Salute is co-presented by Memorial Hall, the Cincinnati VA Medical Center, and Queen City Concert Band.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Veterans Art Exhibition | Evenings, November 9 – 11, 6:30 p.m.  – 9:00 p.m.

Celebrate Veterans Day by viewing an exhibition of artwork created by local veterans in the Memorial Hall Ballrooms. Featured artwork will include pieces created by veterans who have participated in the Creative Arts Therapy program at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center. Mediums included in past veteran shows have included painting, drawing, sculpture and photography; applied art that includes ceramics, woodcarving, needlework and leatherwork; and craft kits such as string art, fabric art and wood building. This exhibition is part of a veteran’s therapy and provides recognition for their artistic accomplishments.

Tickets are not required to view the art exhibition.

Queen City Concert Band Veterans Salute | Thursday, November 11, 7:00 p.m.

Memorial Hall’s longtime resident wind symphony, the Queen City Concert Band (QCCB) is proud to return home for its eleventh Veterans Salute. As always, a Military Honor Guard will be on hand representing all branches of the United States military. The QCCB will offer a variety of patriotic selections with themes reflecting the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform during America’s significant domestic and foreign wars. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 911 tragedy, which will be commemorated with a performance of Flight of Valor. The piece was written by James Swearingen as a memorial for the victims of United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, during the September 11, 2001 attacks. Veterans (and family members) are encouraged to attend this fitting tribute. Performance time is 7:00 pm. A cookie and punch reception will follow.

The Queen City Concert Band performance is free to attend, but tickets are required, and seating is reserved.

Popular Demand for Jazz Extends Memorial Hall Lineup &
Inspires Encore Summer Series at Washington Park

CINCINNATI, OH – Twenty new jazz concerts are on tap in Over-the-Rhine as live performing arts continue to gain footing.

Since January, Memorial Hall has provided safe, socially distant live jazz experiences on Monday nights for both in-person and livestreaming audiences. Responding to popular demand, 3CDC has extended that program in the historic venue, and is launching a 17-show series at Washington Park. The result: eight consecutive months of weekly jazz programming in Over-the-Rhine’s arts corridor in 2021, featuring the finest local and regional jazz talent.

Monday, April 12, 2021, 7 p.m.

Internationally demanded vibraphone / piano collaboration The Duo Tachoir debuts selections from their brand-new album, Shades of Blue. Veterans of jazz festivals including Montreaux, Northsea, Montreal, Pittsburgh and more, Nashville-based Duo Tachoir offers their first Cincinnati performance in recent memory.  Featuring Marlene Tachoir (piano, voice) Jerry Tachoir (vibraphone).

Soulful Songs of Love with the Dixie Karas Quartet
Monday, April 19, 2021, 7 p.m.

One of the Queen City’s best-loved divas, Dixie Karas brings lends her powerhouse vocals to an evening of treasured love songs from every generation. A full-time music professional, Dixie effortlessly leaps from soothing melodies to fierce soulful deliveries, her commanding presence connecting with listeners in a way that makes them a part of the magic. Featuring Dixie Karas (vocals), Ted Karas (guitar), Aaron Jacobs (bass), John Taylor (drums).

Brasilia Plays Jobim
Monday, April 26, 2021, 7 p.m.

Brasilia is a Cincinnati based band that fuses the improvisational influences of American jazz with the wide pallet of Brazilian musical styles, featuring an all CCM Jazz faculty lineup. For this concert they feature the music of Brazil’s most internationally celebrated composer, Antonio Carlos Jobim. Featuring Phil DeGreg (piano), Kim Pensyl (trumpet), Rusty Burge (vibraphone), Aaron Jacobs (bass) and John Taylor (drums).

All Jazz at the Memo performances are 7-9 p.m. at Memorial Hall (1225 Elm Street, Over-the-Rhine). Tickets are $8 ($6 for students) and may be purchased online (MemorialHallOTR.com) or over the phone (513.977, 8037; Mo – Th, 1-6 p.m.). Cash bar available. Complimentary wine tastings for all Jazz at the Memo performances will be provided by Over-The-Rhine’s own Revel OTR Urban Winery.

WP_Jazz in the ParkWASHINGTON PARK SERIES ANNOUNCED:

Washington Park announces its Jazz In The Park series, presented by GBBN and the Segoe Foundation, taking place Monday nights May 3 through August 30, 2021 (excluding Memorial Day). A complete lineup can be found at WashingtonPark.org.

Jazz in the Park 2021 is the series’ sophomore effort, having launched in 2020 to provide safe entertainment during the COVID-19 pandemic. With a lineup transferred from Memorial Hall (which remained closed for much of last summer), the 2020 offerings were a big hit for music lovers and Over-the-Rhine residents.

All Jazz in the Park performances are 6-9 p.m. at The Porch, presented by PPG Paints, in Washington Park and are free and open to the public, though space may be limited. No reservations required. Cash bar available. Jazz in the Park is programmed in collaboration with Jazz at the Memo.

Due to health concerns posed by COVID-19 we are taking extra precautionary measures at The Porch in addition to our standard operating procedures regarding sanitation, including:

  • Seating at The Porch presented by PPG Paints has been greatly reduced to accommodate social distancing.
  • No cash will be accepted; credit cards and contactless payment only please.
  • Once seated, please remain in your designated spot. Patrons may take their drinks throughout the park. Please observe alcohol perimeter signage at the park exits.
  • Our staff will ensure a clean space, keeping disinfectant at the ready and wiping down tables/chairs/areas in between patron usage.
  • Masks are required when moving thru the space and while ordering, and can be removed once your beverages are served.
  • We are asking our patrons to please be sure to clean up after themselves, leaving no napkins, tissues or food product behind.
  • Games will not be available at this time.

A black man imbued with the gift of time travel searches for freedom in three American eras.

NKU’s Daryl Harris leads a cast of gifted black actors in an exploration of the dark corners of America’s historical relationship with race. SILAS, THE UNINVITED is a world premiere reading by lauded Cincinnati playwright Derek Snow, whose plays have been performed at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, the Know Theatre Cincinnati, and at venues around the country and internationally.

In a time when Americans are grappling with the deaths George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, among so many others, playwright Snow finds sad parallels in current and historical violence towards black people.

Newly discharged soldier Jess has finally returned to her Florida hometown. She brings with her not only vivid memories of Afghanistan, but painful burns that have left her physically and emotionally scarred. Jess soon realizes that things at home have changed even more than she has. Through the use of virtual reality video game therapy, she builds a breathtaking new world where she can escape her pain. As Jess advances farther in the game, she begins to restore her relationships, her life, and, slowly, herself.

Veteran performer, playwright and educator Spring Starr Pillow highlights a cast of gifted young actors including Noah Berry, on pandemic hiatus from a national touring career including SPAMALOT and BUDDY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY. Active Know Theatre performer and Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati apprentice program alum Katie Groneman takes on the challenging role of Jess, who is recuperating her severe injuries from an IED explosion in Afghanistan. Talented actor and director Aaron Whitehead makes his second Resilience Staged Reading Series appearance on the heels of a memorable performance in CRY IT OUT, while busy multi-instrumentalist, actor and competitive pinball player Linsey Rogers makes her Memorial Hall debut.

In what must be considered an all-star cast, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company member Geoffrey Barnes leads an ensemble of exceptional performers who are well-known to Cincinnati audiences. Burgess Byrd has appeared memorably on nearly all the region’s major stages, including recent turns at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, The Human Race Theatre Company and as part of Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s “Monologues of Hope” program. Christine Dye’s exceptional gifts as an actress may be belied by her regular gig in Miami Valley Gaming’s “lucky buckeye” campaigns, but she has nonetheless established herself as one of the Queen City’s finest acting talents, having appeared recently at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, Clifton Performance Theatre and in Kevin Crowley’s SARGE at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. A company member of OTRImprov, and frequent performer in the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, Jasimine Bouldin makes her Memorial Hall debut as Olivia, the fearless and passionate love interest of Silas.

MEMO_Noah BerryNOAH BERRY (Stevie, UGLY LIES THE BONE) has spent the last four years touring the country in various musicals and regional productions. Other favorite tours and regional credits include the National tour of SPAMALOT (Ensemble), LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (Seymour), [TITLE OF SHOW] (Hunter Bell), and THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE (Leaf Coneybear). MEMO_Jasimine BouldinJASIMINE BOULDIN (Olivia Dotson, SILAS) is a Cincinnati native who attended Northern Kentucky University to obtain a BA in Acting. After taking a five-year hiatus from performing, she’s been making strides to be more present in Cincinnati’s acting scene. She’s been a member of OTRImprov since 2017. She made her Cincinnati Fringe Festival debut in 2018 and has since also appeared in the Festival with Performance Gallery in KUMFERTED (2019) and HIVE MIND (2020). She’s been featured in independent films such as “Slasher” (written and directed by Jonathan Rowan, 2019) and “Wildfire, OH” (written by David James, 2019).

MEMO_Burgess ByrdBURGESS BYRD* (Marlene Hartfield, SILAS) is delighted to perform with a great group of folks in a show that’s not over a Zoom call. Recent credits: “Monologues of Hope” Cincinnati Playhouse in The Park, “Say Their Names” with Pones, Monologues For Us By Us with Cincinnati Black Theatre Collective, GLORIA: A LIFE at Human Race Theatre, and THE FROG PRINCESS at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. MEMO_Katie GronemanKATIE GRONEMAN (Jessie, UGLY LIES THE BONE) is a proud Cincinnati native and graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington where she studied performance. She is an Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati acting apprentice alumna, who has also been seen at Know Theatre Cincinnati in Serials and as part of the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. shows. She is very excited to have just finished recording THE ELECTION OF MS. REBECCA’S THIRD GRADE CLASS as an audio play for the Know. She has filmed commercials for Macy’s, Gold Star Chili, Bob Evan’s, KY Lottery, and Cradle Cincinnati, to name a few. Recent film credits include the Amazon Prime series “Wildfire” and the movie “Hard Kill” starring Bruce Willis Some of her favorite performance moments to date are RABBIT HOLE (Izzy), the off-Broadway tour of THE JEWELER’S SHOP (Anna), and recording her own stories for FBi Radio when she lived in Australia. MEMO_Daryl HarrisDARYL HARRIS (Director, SILAS, THE UNINVITED) is a Full Professor in the Theatre and Dance Program in the School of the Arts (SOTA) at Northern Kentucky University. He is a 52-year veteran of traditional, experimental, educational, and applied theatre. He has studied and worked throughout North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. In addition to teaching diverse interdisciplinary theatre courses, Daryl also acts in, directs and costume-designs theatrical productions. His primary passion: engaging scholars and communities transculturally and transnationally across disciplines.

MEMO_Linsey RogersLINSEY ROGERS (Kacie, UGLY LIES THE BONE) is so thankful for this opportunity to return to live theatre! AKA The Wandering Linstrel, she has performed professionally all over the world as a violist, fiddler, pianist, vocalist, and actress. Locally she has worked with Know Theatre of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, Cincinnati Landmark Productions, and The Carnegie. MEMO_Spring Starr PillowSPRING STARR PILLOW (Voice / Mom, UGLY) graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a degree in Musical Theatre Performance and holds Master’s Credits from the University of Cincinnati in Education and Counseling. She is currently employed as the Education Specialist for Wordplay Cincy. Spring is a very active part of the initiative to combine theatre and education. She has developed several after school and in school workshops combining curriculum and drama in the Tri-state schools. Spring has worked for several tri-state theatres, including Ensemble Theatre, Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati, Covedale Theatre, and The Showboat Majestic, and was a featured cabaret performer at The Celestial. Spring has also had the privilege of singing and writing with David Kisor, a prolific children’s song writer, on several nationally recognized CDs and play projects through Growing Sound. In her spare time, Spring enjoys writing poetry, short stories, plays and music, rehabbing old homes, singing with her band No Guarantees whenever possible, and spending time with her boys, Nick, Eli, and Max and her dogs, Sophie and Herman.

MEMO_Derek SnowDEREK SNOW (Playwright, SILAS) has been in the Cincinnati theatre community as an actor, writer and director for over 35 years. A graduate of the School for Creative and Performing Arts, Derek then continued his education in New York City before returning after graduation to teach dramatic arts to inner-city youth in the public school system. He has been with the popular physical theatre group Performance Gallery for the past 18 years. His written work has been produced in Atlanta, New Jersey and Sydney, Australia. He recently had his latest short play, WIND KILL FACTOR, read for a sold-out audience at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, and is thrilled to be bringing SILAS, THE UNINVITED to audiences for the first time.

MEMO_Phillip WebsterPHILLIP WEBSTER (Director, UGLY LIES THE BONE) is a musician, actor and all-around dilettante who’s been onstage and behind the scenes at the Horizon Theatre (Atlanta), the Georgia Shakespeare Festival, Prince George’s Co. Shakespeare in the Park, The Carnegie and New Stage Collective, among others. He is also veteran of the US
Air Force and a graduate of the Defense Language Institute’s Arabic program. Phillip is the creator of two podcasts, a historical news program called Queen City Bulletin and the upcoming Froghammer Shakespeare Radio Hour, a behind the scenes look at Northern Kentucky’s longest-running and most bizarre classical theatre company.

MEMO_Aaron WhiteheadAARON WHITEHEAD (Kelvin, UGLY LIES THE BONE) is happy to be making his first appearance at Memorial Hall. Working by day at a Cincinnati non-profit, Aaron spends his evenings involved with as much theatre as possible. Some of Aaron’s recent local appearances include THE ELEPHANT MAN (Merrick) with Center Stage Players, THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS (Melvin) at Warsaw Federal Incline Theater, and DRY LAND (Janitor) at Clifton Performance Theatre. Aaron was rehearsing the role of Anthony in THE END OF THE RAINBOW at the Carnegie when COVID-19 hit, cancelling the show. Aaron was also scheduled to direct THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO at Mariemont Players, but this was rescheduled for autumn 2021. Aaron is glad to have the opportunity to be involved with theatre that has such strong social relevance as a means of speaking out for marginalized voices in these difficult times.

Box Office
The series takes place in Memorial Hall’s opulent Green Ballroom, which offers a safe setting for up to 24 guests at socially distant tables. Seating is available for socializing groups of two or four; single tickets are not available. Patrons may reserve tables by making a pay-what-you-can donation; the recommended donation is $20.00 per patron. All net proceeds of the intimate productions will directly benefit the theater artists on stage and behind the scenes.
