Know Theatre’s 22nd Season Continues with US Premiere of IN THE NIGHT TIME (before the sun rises) by Nina Segal

KTC_NightTimePosterJanuary 17th- February 8th

When the world comes crashing down around you,
how do you make it through the night?

Following its London premiere in 2016, Nina Segal’s riveting new drama In the Night Time (before the sun rises) makes it U.S. debut on the Know Theatre Mainstage this January:

Somewhere – not here, but somewhere – it is night time.

A baby cries. A bottle breaks. A window smashes. And deep into the night, a couple we meet as simply “Man” and “Woman” try to soothe their screaming newborn back to sleep.

As the hours grow longer, the world becomes elastic around them, and the horrors that scar our planet threatens to crash into the baby’s room.

In the longest, darkest hours of the night, when sleep deprivation robs you of your mooring, you begin to wonder – how could we have brought a child into such a wounded world?

And how can we find the hope, together, to carry on?

A finalist for the 2016 Yale Drama Prize, In the Night Time (before the sun rises)  was first staged at London’s Gate Theatre, and makes its US premiere right here at the Know.

Called “raw and restlessand “visceral from start to finish by critics, Nina Segal’s unflinching script echoes the styles of Sarah Kane or Caryl Churchill, but with a contemporary feel all her own. And though Segal is unafraid to take us into the darker stretches of the human imagination, this story’s ultimate message of hope at the end of a long night will resonate with anyone seeking the light in these dark times.

To take on this intense experimental drama, Know Theatre is proud to bring back University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s Brant Russell to direct.

We asked him what about In the Night Time (before the sun rises) resonates with him, as both an artist and a parent – and this is what he had to say:

So, I’m a dad and I also like to think that I’m a conscientious person that strives to be ethical.

This play not only asks the question of why would we bring newborn life into such a broken place, but also: does bringing new lives into this broken place make it more broken?

In what ways are we culpable as parents? Are we condemning the next generation by creating them?

The Know is delighted to showcase two of Cincinnati’s most versatile performers to bring In The Night Time’s struggling young couple and the big ideas with which they’ll wrestle into vivid focus.

Straight from their hilarious performances in Know’s record-breaking run of Puffs, we welcome back Elizabth Chinn Molloy and Brandon Burton to show you a whole new side to their dramatic talents.

Before Puffs, Elizabeth Chinn Molloy’s work had previously appeared on the Know MainStage in 2019’s Mercury and 2017’s SuperTrue. You may also have caught her work in Serials!,the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, and various play readings in the Know Underground. This time, she takes on the challenging role of “Woman,” a new mother whose fears and doubts begin to metastasize under the pressure of a sleepless child. Is it ethical or right to bring a child into our modern world?

Joining Elizabeth once again is Brandon Burton as “Man.” Currently onstage as math magician Oliver Rivers in Puffs, you might remember him as the hilarious Castle Guard in Marian, or The True Tale of Robin Hood and Islington & Lord Rat Speaker in Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere. This time, he tackles the gritty and emotional role of a new father grown delirious as he and his wife desperately attempt to get their newborn to sleep.

In our bleakest moments, we turn to each other to reconnect and rediscover the hope we’ve lost – because, sometimes, the only way to make it through the night is together.

If you’re seeking a new dawn, too, don’t miss In the Night Time (Before the Sun Rises), running January 17th- February 8th, only at Your Theatrical Playground.

Cast Announced for IN THE NIGHT TIME (BEFORE THE SUN RISES) at Know Theatre

ktc_logoGet to Know the faces about to bring to life the US premiere of IN THE NIGHT TIME (BEFORE THE SUN RISES) this January:

You may recognize the faces of these two amazing actors from a little-known show called PUFFS!

Guest Director Brant Russell was immediately drawn to their versatility and the natural chemistry they have built on and off stage during the run of PUFFS – which will come in handy as they dig deep into this stunning new dramatic work about a young couple confronting the brokenness of our modern world over the course of one long, sleepless night with their newborn baby.

KTC_Elizabeth MolloyElizabeth Chin Molloy returns to the Know as Woman. Elizabeth previously appeared on the Know MainStage in Mercury and SuperTrue; and you may also have caught her work in Serials!, Cincy Fringe, and various play readings in the Know Underground. This time she takes on the challenging role of a mother in the hazy hours of the night time, grappling with some of our time’s most pressing moral conundrums. Is it ethical or right to bring a child into our modern world?

KTC_Brandon BurtonJoining Elizabeth once again is Brandon Burton as Man: Currently onstage as math magician Oliver Rivers in Puffs, you might remember him as the hilarious Castle Guard in Marian, or The True Tale of Robin Hood and Islington & Lord Rat Speaker in Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere. This time, he tackles the gritty and emotional role of a new father  grown delirious as he and his wife desperately attempt to get their newborn to sleep.

The US Premiere of IN THE NIGHT TIME (BEFORE THE SUN RISES) runs January 17th- February 8th, and is a tale for anyone who has ever wondered if they’re on the right path – and if there is light at the end of a long, dark night.Reserve your tickets for this explosive new drama here.

PUFFS, OR SEVEN INCREASINGLY EVENTFUL YEARS AT A CERTAIN SCHOOL OF MAGIC AND MAGIC Quick Review

PUFFS, OR SEVEN INCREASINGLY EVENTFUL YEARS AT A CERTAIN SCHOOL OF MAGIC AND MAGIC presented by Know Theatre of Cincinnati through Dec. 21. I attended the opening night performance.

PLEASE NOTE! This is not a children’s show. Know has rated the performance PG-13 as some material may be inappropriate for children 13 and under.

An orphan, a pure-blood, and a mudblood become fast friends at a wizarding school. But this is not the story you know. In this hysterical send-up, PUFFS focuses on classmates in a lesser house during those same seven years the school was attended by a certain bespectacled student with a lightning bolt scar.

Director Andrew Hungerford (who also serves as lighting designer) deftly manages the chaos, leading the talented 11-person ensemble (tackling more than 30 characters) through a frantic two-hour comic romp that runs parallel, and at times intersects, with the well-known series. The best compliment I can pay is that they all make the execution of this herculean task look easy. The versatile and hilarious cast includes Andrew Ian Adams, Merritt Beischel, Brianna Bernard, Brandon Burton, Maggie Cramer, Ben Dudley, Jared Earland, Maliyah Gramata-Jones, Elizabeth Chinn Molloy, Jordan Trovillion, and Chris Wesselman.

The show would not be nearly as successful without the incredible work of the production team and their contributions: the simple, detailed, and versatile set of Baron E. Pugh, finished by carpenter Andrew Homan; the crazy number of quick-changeable costumes designed by Noelle Wedig-Johnston; magic-ing made even more enjoyable by sound designer Douglas Borntrager;  original yet reminiscent incidental music created by local composer James Allen; the oh-so-so-many props designed by Kayla Williams (who also served as paint charge); the “magical melees” credited to Jonn Baca; and the “soul sucking security guards” designed by puppeteer Sean Mette. With so much to handle, Henry Bateman directed the technical aspects of the show from the front while stage manager Meghan Winter (assisted by Madelyn Hawver & Matthew Schutte kept everything on track backstage. And finally, a mention of dialect coach Chaslee Schweitzer and production assistant Danitza Piper who rounded out the crew. As you can see, it takes a village to create a magic school.

You don’t need an encyclopedic knowledge of the book or the movie series to enjoy this production. The script is tight and laugh out loud funny, but still allows for improvisation in several places. I’m not going to spoil any of it.

Tickets are flying out the door faster than you can say “Floo powder” so you better “accio” yours sooner rather than later.

My rating: 5 out of 5.
