Regional Premiere of AMOUR Hits the Stage in Hamilton

GHCT_Amour logoHamilton, OH January 28, 2022—As the third production of its 2021-2022 season, Greater Hamilton Civic Theatre proudly presents the regional premiere of the Broadway musical, Amour, with music by Michel Legrand and libretto by Didier van Cauwelaert, adapted from Le Passe-Muraille by Marcel Aymé, English adaptation by Jeremy Sams. Amour is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Tams-Witmark LLC.

Set in Paris shortly after World War II, Amour focuses on the mild-mannered Dusoleil, a lowly clerk who longs for the beautiful, unhappily married Isabelle. When life changes inexplicably and unexpectedly for Dusoleil, he becomes a bit of a Parisian Robin Hood, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. As word spreads of his noble pursuits, intriguing Isabelle, shy Dusoleil faces a dilemma–does he continue his campaign, or own up to his escapades and rescue Isabelle from her lonely life?

Performances will be held at Parrish Auditorium on the Miami University Hamilton campus (1601 University Blvd Hamilton, OH) February 10, 11, and 12 at 7:30pm and February 13 at 2pm. Tickets are available online at www.ghctplay.com, by phone at 513-737-PLAY(7529), and at the door prior to performances and are $17 for individual tickets. Special group pricing ($15/ticket) is available for groups of 20 or more. All patrons are required to wear masks while attending performances.

Amour is sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Max Iltzsch, produced by Erin Heinrich, and directed and vocal directed by Ryan Heinrich–with conductor Betsy Horton, stage manager Brooke Baird, scenic design by Mary Slocum, lighting and sound design by Eric Cimini, properties by Marijo Farley, and costumes by Rhonda Lucas.

This is Ryan Heinrich’s fourth production as director at GHCT–following Blood Brothers in 2014, Little Women in 2011 and Baker’s Wife in 2010.

This production has brought together actors from throughout the region. Returning to the GHCT stage is Wright State musical theatre graduate Sean Miller-Jones (Dusoleil). He is joined by Talia Noelle Zoll (Isabelle), who has frequented stages across Cincinnati, in her first role with GHCT.

Rounding out the incredible ensemble cast are Clancey Butts (Charles/Policeman/Communist), Scott Christian (Bertrand/Policeman/Lawyer), Maria Helbig (Madeleine/Nun), Adam Hesselbrock (News Vendor), Dylan McGill (Prosecutor General/Boss), Katelyn Quinn (Whore/Claire), and Sami Shaaban (Painter/Doctor/President).

SYNOPSIS
This classic comedy opens as a group of the guys assembled for cards in the apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it’s no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger who has just been separated from his wife. Fastidious, depressed and none too tense, Felix seems suicidal, but as the action unfolds Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the clean-freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with hilarious results as The Odd Couple is born.

WHAT TO PREPARE
Auditions will consist of reading from the script.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Oscar Madison – A carefree, good-natured, divorced sportswriter who lives alone in a messy eight-room New York apartment. He is completely oblivious to dirt, clutter, and the overdue child-support payments about which his wife telephones weekly. Oscar’s lifestyle is abruptly turned around when he takes in one of the members of the group, Felix Ungar, whose wife has thrown him out.

Felix Unger – A fussy man who knows that he is difficult to live with but cannot—or will not—make any concessions or compromises. His wife, unwilling to continue their marriage, asks him to leave the family despite his suicide threat, and he then moves in with Oscar.

Gwendolyn Pigeon – Oscar and Felix’s giggly upstairs neighbor, one of a pair of English sisters. She is a widow.

Cecily Pigeon – Oscar and Felix’s giggly upstairs neighbor, one of a pair of English sisters. She is a divorcée.

Speed – One of Oscar and Felix’s poker buddies. Gruff and sarcastic, often picking on Vinnie and Murray.

Murray – A NYPD policeman, one of Oscar and Felix’s poker buddies.

Roy – One of Oscar and Felix’s poker buddies. Oscar’s accountant. Roy has a dry wit but is less acerbic than Speed.

Vinnie – One of Oscar and Felix’s poker buddies. Vinnie is mild-mannered and henpecked, making him an easy target for Speed’s verbal barbs.

Update to 2021-2022 Season Announced by Greater Hamilton Civic Theatre

GHCT_logoDear Friends of GHCT,

The Board of Trustees has made the difficult decision to change our fourth production of this season, Sweeney Todd. The Board has many concerns about moving forward with the production. Among those are a surge in COVID cases in our area, having a large cast in close quarters over the winter months, and the financial costs of a large musical. The Board considered those concerns and made the decision to change our season.

While we greatly appreciate the support shown to our first two shows, our attendance tracking has told us that the bulk of our audience is not quite ready to attend the theater as they did pre-pandemic. Considering the significant cost of producing a musical of that caliber, and many other factors, we have decided to produce a smaller play instead.

We are pleased to announce that we will close out the 2021-2022 comeback season with classic play, Neil Simon’s THE ODD COUPLE. The play will be directed by Rhonda Lucas. Auditions will be held March 10th and 11th. Performance dates are April 28th- May 1st.

We hope that you will continue to support GHCT in any way you are able.

SWEENEY TODD Postponed by Greater Hamilton Civic Theatre

GHCT_logoFrom Rhonda Lucas, director

GHCT’s production of SWEENEY TODD has been postponed until sometime next season. With a cast of 30 and an orchestra of at least 17, the growing omicron variant and the fact that audiences have not come back full force yet….it was just too big of a risk for health and financial reasons at this time.

Thx to all who expressed interest in helping with crew or interested in auditioning.

Hopefully we get to slay people and bake them in pies next year.

A comedic play, to be announced will be presented in the April slot.
