Based on mesmerizing true events, SUMMERLAND tells the riveting tale of William H. Mumler, a spirit photographer with a talent for taking haunting images of the dead. Set in 1869, the story follows Mumler’s meteoric rise and fall, from his wildly successful studio business, which boasted Mary Todd Lincoln as a client, to his indictment for fraud. Did Mumler really capture the visits of loved ones from beyond the grave? Or were his living subjects the victims of unspeakable deception meant to prey upon their longing to believe? SUMMERLAND is a gripping and suspenseful world premiere in which the camera provides an invitation to the truth between two worlds. SUMMERLAND is appropriate for adult and teenage audiences. It contains minimal adult language, but the play’s supernatural themes may be too spooky for younger audiences.

Not your typical boy-meets-girl comedy, Little Shop of Horrors is a hilarious musical that’s literally out of this world. On Skid Row, Seymour is your average, nerdy, down-on-his-luck floral assistant. That all changes when he meets a power-hungry, fast-talking plant who vows to fulfill Seymour’s wildest dreams: fame, fortune and the heart of the girl he loves. There’s just one catch. The plant thirsts for human blood, and its growing pains send Seymour down a diabolical path with murderous consequences. With an infectious score that gleefully combines rock, Motown and Broadway, Little Shop of Horrors ensures you’ll be toe-tapping along to this screamingly funny, joyously entertaining, tongue-in-cheek delight. Cincinnati Playhouse Offers Immersive, Inspired Learning with Winter Acting Classes for Youth Ages 3 to 14

PIP_logo(CINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s winter acting class schedule, for young performers ages 3 to 14, offers adventures with imaginative sea creatures, wizards, zombies and contemporary musicals to engage young imaginations in creative and confidence-building ways. Designed to strengthen communication skills and develop a sense of community, the classes will focus on individual and collective skill development in a fun, supportive environment.

Children from age 3 through third grade will dive into a world of wonder with Under the Sea Adventures. Using storytelling and movement, they’ll stretch their imaginations to transform into real and imagined sea creatures and discover new habitats. They’ll make friends while working on motor skills, collaboration and group endeavors. Under the Sea Adventures will be offered on Saturdays from Jan. 14 through March 11 (no class Feb. 25): at 10 a.m. for ages 3 and 4 (30-minute sessions, $95); at 10:30 a.m. for kindergarten and first graders (45-minute sessions, $140); and at 11:15 a.m. for second and third graders (45-minute sessions, $140).

Fourth and fifth graders will conjure up the potions, spells and tricks that make up the magic of acting in Wizarding School, which will be offered in two different sessions. The 55-minute classes will be held at 4 p.m. Mondays from Jan. 9 through March 13 (no classes Jan. 16 or Feb. 20) and also — just added — at 9 a.m. Saturdays from Jan. 14 through March 11 (no class Feb. 25). Young performers will learn to use their voices, bodies and imaginations to cast a spell over audiences. Through improvisation and introductory acting techniques they’ll discover that they have the power to transform themselves and the world around them. Cost is $160 for either session.

Zombie Apocalypse arrives for middle schoolers (grades six through eight) at 5 p.m. Mondays from Jan. 9 through March 13 (no classes Jan. 16 or Feb. 20). Students will create a fun and terrifying vision of the undead future through the use of stage makeup and combat to shape-shift into the unique inner zombies they are meant to be. The fee for the 55-minute Zombie Apocalypse sessions is $160.

The Art of Musical Theatre, geared to fifth through eighth graders, takes on Contemporary Musicals in 55-minute classes at 6 p.m. Mondays from Jan. 9 through March 13 (no classes Jan. 16 or Feb. 20; $160). Budding musical theatre students will learn introductory dance and vocal techniques that add polish and pizzazz to the catchy, can’t-get-them-out-of-your-head songs from Hamilton, Matilda and Catch Me If You Can.

All classes will take place at the Playhouse, and the final day of each class will include a sharing of student work with families. Cincinnati Playhouse Extends Hit Production, The Second City’s HOLIDAZED & CONFUSED REVUE Through Jan. 8

pip_holidazed-extended(CINCINNATI) –  The Playhouse is offering a hilarious opportunity to recap and/or recover from your holiday experiences — an additional week of THE SECOND CITY’S HOLIDAZED & CONFUSED REVUE, which is the perfect antidote to seasonal stress. The show, which had been set to close on Dec. 31, now will run through Jan. 8, 2017.

The extension adds eight new performances: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3; 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4; 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5; 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6; 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7; and 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8.

A sold-out tradition in the Windy City, THE SECOND CITY’S HOLIDAZED & CONFUSED REVUE rolls in with a blast of holidazed laughter to blow away the emotionally-charged chaos of Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and everything in between.

The cast of THE SECOND CITY’S HOLIDAZED & CONFUSED REVUE includes Tyler Davis, Katie Kershaw, Charles Pettitt, Emma Pope, Amy Thompson and Nate Varrone.

Tickets to 7 p.m. Sunday College Night performances are priced at just $10 for college students with a valid school ID. Student tickets are just $15 on the day of the show for all other performances.

Discounted ticket prices for teens and students are always available for $30 and $45, depending on seat location.

Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; 8 p.m. Fridays; 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturdays; and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sundays.

Wendy C. Goldberg Named Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Associate Artist for the 2017-2018 Season

(CINCINNATI) – Veteran director Wendy C. Goldberg, who has had a decade-long relationship with the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, will join the Playhouse’s Associate Artist program for the 2017-18 season.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Wendy to the Playhouse family in this new capacity,” says Playhouse Artistic Director Blake Robison.  “She brings creativity, experience and a wealth of knowledge about new plays to the table.  I’m confident that the Cincinnati community will embrace her with open arms, just as they have enjoyed her past productions.”

For the Playhouse, Ms. Goldberg directed Circle Mirror Transformation in 2015 and the world premiere of Deborah Zoe Laufer’s Leveling Up in 2013, as well as productions of Doubt and Durango in 2008.

Ms. Goldberg will join Timothy Douglas and KJ Sanchez as the Playhouse’s associate artists for the 2017-18 season. Past associate artists have included Michael Evan Haney and Eric Ting.

Ms. Goldberg, in her 13th season as the artistic director of the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Connecticut, has spent the last 20 years leading the foremost programs in the development, direction and production of new works for American theatre. American Theatre magazine has described her as “one of the most promising theatre artists working today.”

Under Ms. Goldberg’s tenure at the O’Neill, the company was awarded the 2010 Regional Tony Award — the first play development and education organization to receive this honor — and also received the National Endowment for the Arts’ National Medal of Arts in a ceremony at the White House in 2015. Currently, Ms. Goldberg leads a new O’Neill program for the development of directors, The National Directors Fellowship, which is a collaboration with The Kennedy Center, Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation and the National New Play Network, funded by the Doris Duke Foundation.

Ms. Goldberg has overseen the development of more than 90 projects for the stage. This season, several O’Neill projects will be seen on Broadway, off-Broadway, regionally and in London. She is currently working on several plays, one of which will make its Broadway debut next season.

Her directing credits include many world premieres, revivals and musicals at some of the most esteemed theatres in New York and across the country, including Arena Stage, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Guthrie Theater, Goodman Theatre, Signature Theatre, Center Stage, Alliance Repertory Theatre Company, PlayMakers Repertory Company, Philadelphia Theater Company and Paper Mill Playhouse, among others.

As an artistic associate at Arena Stage for five seasons, Ms. Goldberg helped to create the theatre’s new play initiatives and led them from their inception through 2005. She has served on the Stage Directors and Choreography Society’s Executive Board for 11 years, is a Tony voter and is a guest faculty member at the Iowa Writers Workshop and the Yale School of Drama.

The Playhouse’s Associate Artist program is supported by a grant from The Greater Cincinnati Foundation.
