PIP_logoCincinnati Playhouse in the Park Announces 2017-2018 Season

Shakespeare in Love, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Million Dollar Quartet Will Bring Romance, Fun and Music to Cincinnati

(CINCINNATI)–Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park announced today an exciting season of extravagant stage adaptations, powerhouse productions and world premieres, beginning with an adaptation of the Oscar-winning film SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE opening Sept. 2.

“We’re  planning a blockbuster line-up this year in the Marx Theatre,” says Blake Robison, artistic director. “We’re bringing Cincinnati shows from London’s West End, two Tony Award-winning shows and a beloved adventure story. In the Thompson Shelterhouse Theatre, we will debut two world premieres and present comedies that will leave you in stitches. You won’t want to miss a single show.”

The Marx Theatre season features extravagant stage adaptations of the beloved, Oscar-winning film SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE and favorite adventure story TREASURE ISLAND;  the exclusive regional premiere of the Tony Award-winning adaptation of the bestselling novel, THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME; the acclaimed musical featuring legends Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley in the Tony-award winning MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET; and the roof-raising gospel music of Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight in the regional premiere of MARIE AND ROSETTA.

In the Shelterhouse Theatre, audiences will enjoy two compelling world premiere plays by up-and-coming female playwrights, BE HERE NOW and SOONER/LATER, a poignant and daring production about the ties that bind us all, featuring one actress who brings to life nine different characters in MR. JOY by Dayton-native Daniel Beaty; and zany musical comedies with the hilarious, two-man whodunit MURDER FOR TWO and Frank Ferrante’s acclaimed turn as Groucho Marx in AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO.

Along with the new season, the Playhouse announced that its returning Associate Artists Timothy Douglas and KJ Sanchez will be in residence during the 2017-18  season in new creative roles. Timothy Douglas, who started his career in the theatre as an actor and performs classical work at the renowned Shakespeare &  Company will make his Playhouse acting debut in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. In addition, newly appointed Associate Artist Wendy Goldberg will direct the world premiere of SOONER/LATER.

KJ Sanchez returns as a playwright to her community-based play CINCINNATI KING. The Playhouse will hold an extended workshop to take the script to the next level and prepare it for a potential fully-staged production. Robison commissioned Sanchez to create the play in 2013. It celebrates the legacy of Cincinnati’s own King Records and was compiled from transcripts of interviews with nearly 50 people across greater Cincinnati, as well as newspaper clippings and books written about King Records. The project was last seen as a staged concert reading in Cincinnati’s Washington Park in 2015.

“We are excited to showcase different sides of our Artistic Associates’ talents this season, bringing more creativity and artistry to our community in the new season,” Robison says.

For the 2017-18 season, Playhouse performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, at 8 p.m. Fridays, 4 and 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays.

Subscriptions to the 2017-18 Playhouse season are available now in a variety of packages. Prices range from $157.50 to $396.00 for the five-show Robert S. Marx Season or the five Thompson Shelterhouse shows and $280 to $704 for the full 10-show combination series.

The popular Build Your Own subscription allows patrons to create their own season of four to nine shows. Once again this season, all price options are available in the lower level of  the Marx Theatre. The Playhouse offers two-, three-, six- and nine-month payment plans for subscribers. Some restrictions apply.

A student Build-Your-Own package allows full-time students to pick as few as four shows and as many as all 10 for just $15 per show. The Babysitter Rebate Series allows a couple purchasing two subscriptions in the Marx Theatre to attend any performance and receive up to $100 at the end of the season to help cover the cost of babysitters for children under the age of 12.

JANE EYRE Brings Victorian Romance and Inventive Staging to Cincinnati Playhouse

Critically acclaimed adaptation runs March 11 – April 8, 2017

pip_jane-eyre-logo

(CINCINNATI) — Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park brings Charlotte Brontë’s timeless coming-of-age novel to life beginning March 11. The production combines Victorian-era costumes and romance with inventive staging to bring new creativity and vitality to the classic story, considered one of the most widely read novels in the English language.

Adapted by British playwright Polly Teale, the play distills the book to the most essential moments and dramatic action. Cincinnati Playhouse Associate Artist and Director KJ Sanchez envisioned music, movement and choreography to transport Jane Eyre’s story to the stage.

“Because the adaptation is so strong, we – the design team, the actors and me – are bringing our own artistry to it,” Sanchez explains. “The actors play musical instruments. I’m working with a great choreographer, Peter Kyle, who I have worked with and admired for years. And I’m thrilled that we have one of the best sound designers in theatre today, Jane Shaw, writing original music for this production.”

Published in 1847, JANE EYRE is a rare classic that moves through time and continues to capture audiences. Poor and plain but with a fiery spirit, Jane overcomes a troubled childhood to land a position as a governess at a mysterious estate, where she falls for the enigmatic master and finds her love returned. When the past threatens her newfound happiness, Jane decides to forge her own path, which enables her to be true to herself and follow her heart. The unconventional heroine, played by Margaret Ivey, will cast a spell on fans of the classic novel and on newcomers drawn to her story.

Beyond the beauty, costumes, artistry, choreography and music lies a story with a message that resonates today, and to which Sanchez relates personally.

“I read this book when I was 13 and it honestly changed my life,” Sanchez explains. ”Jane Eyre was a heroine altogether different from any I had encountered. She was smart and strong and not afraid to speak her mind. She was most comfortable in nature, least comfortable when required to be charming. In fact, she’s reviled, punished and mistreated because she is ‘plain’ — yet Jane is essentially downright beautiful but hated because her beauty is unique and doesn’t fit what is expected by social norms.”

JANE EYRE is sponsored by Leading Ladies, a group of 161 theatre enthusiasts who collectively supported the production with financial gifts while learning about theatre through behind-the-scenes experiences throughout the season.

Prices for JANE EYRE start at $35; they vary depending on seat location and performance day and are subject to change. Tickets for teens and students are $30. Student tickets are just $15 on the day of the show. Plus, Sunday is College Night, with tickets to all 7:00 p.m. performances just $10.The Playhouse is fully accessible. Artist Sponsors are Bill and Barbara Weyand, in honor of KJ Sanchez, and Bahl & Gaynor Investment Counsel. Season Sponsor of New Work is The Lois and Richard Rosenthal Foundation. Cincinnati Playhouse Announces New Building Campaign, Will Stay in Eden Park

pip_blake-outside

Artistic Director Blake Robison. Photo by Mikki Schaffner Photography.

CINCINNATI– Artistic Director Blake Robison announced today that Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park will remain in Eden Park and move forward with a major capital campaign to replace the Playhouse’s current mainstage with a new state-of-the-art facility commensurate with the Playhouse’s artistry and national reputation.

Board of Trustees President Jack Rouse explained that “after more than a year of insightful research and analysis, the Board approved the capital campaign and the plan to build a brand new theatre complex. We remain committed to Eden Park and to the Mt. Adams neighborhood for the long term.”

While still in the earliest stages of planning and development, the building project will feature a new, and even more intimate, mainstage theatre with support facilities including new dressing rooms, a rehearsal room, green room, costume shop and backstage areas. The new theatre will enhance audience experience with better comfort, sightlines, acoustics and entry/exit and expand what can be done on stage.

Details of the building project design, campaign goal and construction timeline will be announced at a later date. The new mainstage theatre complex is projected to open in the Fall of 2020.

“Our campaign leadership is now launching the quiet phase of the campaign,” said Woody Taft, vice president of the board and chairman of the campaign. “We will focus on lead gifts for the next six to nine months before launching the public campaign.”

The Playhouse has hired Rachel Kirley as its Capital Campaign Director. In this added staff position, she’ll dedicate 100 percent of her time to the capital campaign. Additionally, the Playhouse has retained the national firm Arts Consulting Group as campaign counsel to work with Kirley and help guide this effort.

The new Mainstage Theatre Complex is Phase One of a Facility Master Plan. Future phases will include additional capacity for increased initiatives in community engagement and educational outreach across the region.

No major improvements have been made to the Marx Theatre since its construction nearly 50 years ago in 1968. It is the oldest un-renovated mainstage facility at any regional theatre in the country. The Playhouse’s last capital campaign was from 1994 to 1996 and culminated in a major renovation to the public and production support areas in 1997, but did not include any significant improvements to the two theatres.

Winner of two Tony awards, the Playhouse is the region’s preeminent professional theatre with unequaled access to the nation’s finest actors, directors and designers.

“The new state-of-the-art mainstage positions the Playhouse for the future,” Robison explained. “It will enhance our patrons’ experience and give our artists the modern technologies to achieve 21st century production values that are on par or exceed those in New York and London.”

The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of more than 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community Campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMERLAND Review

SUMMERLAND presented by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park through March 5. Click here for more information on the production. I attended the opening night performance.

pip_summerland2

A taste of Halloween comes late (or early, depending on your point of view) to the Park’s Shelterhouse with SUMMERLAND. If you are unfamiliar with the term, “Summerland” is the name given by Theosophists, Wiccans and some earth-based contemporary pagan religions to their conceptualization of an afterlife.

Arlitia Jones’ play uses the now infamous image taken by Spirit Photographer William H. Mumler as a jumping off point for her play. In the photo, a seated Mary Todd Lincoln is captured with the ghostly image of her late husband standing beside her.

Director Michael Evan Haney elicits unique and believable performances from his talented ensemble of three. Billy Finn is strong as the young and driven Jospeh Tooker, determined to prove Mumler is the fraud Tooker is convinced he is. Michael Rothhaar charms as William H. Mumler, a man who appears to genuinely believe his work is a comfort to the living. Playing Mrs. Mumler, Whitney Maris Brown is mesmerizing as the enigmatic and otherworldly wife and possible conspirator.

pip_summerland1

My favorite scene of the play is the beginning of Act II. The “confrontation” between Mrs. Mumler and Tooker is immensely satisfying to watch. Brown is a force of nature as she assails, cajoles and taunts Mr. Tooker, keeping him completely off balance.

For me, one of most successful aspects of the play is how well the technical team set the mood for the piece. The special effects worked well and the theater magic stayed well-hidden in the intimate performance space. The end of Act I is indeed “spooky.”

pip_summerland3

Billy Finn as Joseph Tooker & Michael Rothhaar as William H. Mumler. Photo by Mikki Schaffner.

As a new work the play could still use a bit of editing. The first scene went a bit long in exposition considering how quickly it becomes apparent that the young man is there for more than his portrait sitting. The epilogue also seems a bit anti-climatic, working hard to establish a connection between the two men after all that has transpired.

Overall, an engaging and unique historical drama with a supernatural bent.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5

I would enjoy hearing what you think about the show or my review. All I ask is that you express your opinion without attacking someone else’s opinion. You can post your comments below.
