DESTINY OF DESIRE
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
Feb. 29-March 28
Marx Theatre [Eden Park]

Directed by Jose Luis Valenuela

Burning passion, cunning deception and outrageous melodrama combine in this enormously entertaining homage to Latin American soap operas. A storm brews in the small town of Bellarica, Mexico, when two baby girls are born on the same night in the same hospital. One will have wealth and privilege, and the other will live in poverty. Yet the drama is bound to unfold when a former beauty queen switches the babies at birth in her lust for power. Eighteen years later, fate finds the two girls together again, prompting secrets to be revealed and lies to be unraveled. After all, nothing is impossible in Bellarica! Suitable for adults and older teenage audiences. This Latin-American melodrama features everything there is to love about soap operas: forbidden romance, sexual content, plenty of plotting and scheming, and moments of overly dramatic violence.

Cincinnati Playhouse Brings Classic STUART LITTLE to Family Audiences Throughout Greater Cincinnati Through Feb. 16

New Off the Hill series production now open, will visit Oxford, Covington, Mt. Washington, Clifton and more

PIP_Stuart LIttle

CINCINNATI – Embark on an adventure as the Playhouse presents its second Off the Hill touring production this season with E.B. White’s endearing classic STUART LITTLE. This charming adaptation follows the marvelous maneuverings of a mouse in New York City who is trying to survive in the great, big world. Performed by members of the Bruce E. Coyle Intern company, the delightful adventures of Stuart Little will run now through Feb. 16.

STUART LITTLE is widely recognized as a classic in children’s literature. In the Playhouse’s production, Stuart escapes from a ferocious dog, protects his friend from their devious pet cat and wins a model boat race at Central Park. Approaching every obstacle with confidence and courage, Stuart teaches us, as he says in the show, that “size has nothing to do with it. It’s temperament and ability that count and knowing what’s important.”

STUART LITTLE explores the themes of “difference, friendship, family, loyalty and adventure,” explains Director Dee Anne Bryll. “When Stuart goes in search of his friend, Margalo, he suddenly becomes aware of the challenges of his size. However, he doesn’t let that stop him…He embraces the many different experiences, people and animals that he meets along his journey.”

This heartwarming production is touring the greater Cincinnati area now and is recommended for children 5 and up.

For more information and a full schedule of stops including Mt. Washington, Oxford, Covington, Clifton, Evendale and more, visit cincyplay.com.

Seasonal support of education and outreach programming is provided by The Robert and Adele Schiff Family Foundation. Support for Off the Hill is provided by KeyBank and The John C. Griswold Foundation. The Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company is supported by Jerry and Betsy Shroat, as well as Ron Bunt and Wei Sun.

The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of almost 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation.

BUDDY: The Buddy Holly Story Quick Review

BUDDY: The Buddy Holly Story presented by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park through Feb. 16. I attended the opening night performance.

“Your father would have loved this show.”

Andy Christopher as Buddy Holly. Photo by Mikki Schaffner Photography.

This was one of the first things my Mom said to me following the opening night performance. My parents were slightly younger contemporaries of the bespectacled rock and roller. And I totally blame my father (or more specifically his singles record collection that I played through dozens of time as a child) and the family-watched TV show Sha Na Na (love you Pamela Myers) for my appreciation of ’50s and ’60s music.

Ryan Jagru as Ritchie Valens.

Buddy Holly is “considered one of the most influential creative forces in early rock and roll.” Playhouse’s program features quotes from rock legends Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Elton John, Eric Clapton and Bruce Springsteen to name a few, about his impact on their music.

With its thin book, BUDDY is more tribute show than traditional jukebox musical. The story follows Holly’s struggle to have his music studio-recorded his way, to his groundbreaking performance at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater, to his final Winter Dance Party Tour show in Clear Lake, Iowa before his tragic death at 22.

The cast consists of seven talented musicians and vocalists. Led by Andy Christopher in the title role (and serving as Music Director for the production) they rock the Marx Theatre, expertly performing more than 20 of Holly’s hits with great energy and showmanship that had the audience bobbing in their seats and clapping along.

A highly entertaining production for any Buddy Holly fan. Mom was right, Dad would have loved it.

There is a half-price special available for Tue-Fri and Sunday evening performances. Use promo code 2020fam at checkout, www.cincyplay.com/productions/buddy-the-buddy-holly-story.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Playhouse Summer Camps Now on Sale

PIP_Summer Camp 20192020 program features multiple locations and accessibility program

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s 2020 Summer Theatre Camp and Performance Academy will explore fantastical worlds, storybook lands, favorite books and movies, and so much more.  Camps will be held at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park plus locations in Evendale, Blue Ash, Mason and the West End.

“Each camp option can introduce or further your child’s appreciation of the arts while building confidence and encouraging creativity,” explains Daunielle Rasmussen, director of education and community engagement. “No acting experience is required.”

Locations throughout the region make it easier than ever to participate in summer theatre camps with Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. In addition to its location in Eden Park, camps offerings will take place at Evendale Performance Center; Mason Middle School; Mason Community Center; Pogo Play in Blue Ash; and Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center at Union Terminal.

Multiple locations are not the only way the Playhouse is continuing to increase access for 2020; the Launch Pad Accessibility Program returns and is available for all full-day, one-week camps. Thanks to a generous grant from The Daniel and Susan Pfau Foundation, students with developmental disabilities can be integrated into a traditional theatre camp environment through pre-camp preparation and daily support.

“We want to help all children experience the confidence and creativity boosting opportunities that theatre camps provide,” Rasmussen explained. “Our specially trained instructors and two dedicated instructional aides will help integrate Launch Pad participants by providing them with a daily social narrative and concrete daily schedule; sensory-related assistance including noise-canceling headphones, fidgets and personal comfort items; a quiet place to relax; and other support.”

Camp offerings include half-day camps for children ages 3 to 5. For kids and teens, the Playhouse offers full-day, one-week camps with a variety of themes. Each week offers five exciting courses that are designed to engage in the magic and playfulness of live theatre.

For theatre enthusiasts who wants to experience the production of a play from beginning to end, the Playhouse also offers full-day, one-week and multi-week Performance Academy camps for incoming first through 12th graders. This year’s Performance Academy offerings include Disney’s Mary Poppins Jr., Clue: On Stage and Disney’s 101 Dalmatians KIDS.

For complete camp descriptions or to register, visit cincyplay.com or call 513-421-3888. If participants register before March 1, they receive an early-bird registration discount of $15 off the full price for each camp program.

The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of more than 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community Campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
