There’s trouble in River City! When smooth-talking con man Harold Hill arrives in a small, tight-knit town in Iowa, he expects to dupe its residents with his elaborate moneymaking scheme: Despite his complete lack of musical literacy, he will convince everyone that he is a brilliant bandleader and recruit all the boys in town to form a band, pocketing the cash for instruments and uniforms. The problem? Some of the town members, especially the stern librarian, Marian Paroo, donÕt quite buy HaroldÕs story. As Harold struggles to keep his scheme afloat, he also finds himself increasingly attached to the townspeople, who have all experienced a positive change since Harold came to town. Complicating matters even more, Harold is also falling head-over-heels for the beautiful Marian.

HARVEY Runs Feb. 8-18

BVCT_HarveyHARVEY
Brookville Community Theatre
Feb. 8-18
[Brookville, Oh.]

Directed by Jonathan Emmert

Cast: Ashley Rickert as Myrtle Mae Simmons, Misty White as Veta Louise Simmons, Al Yarcho as Elwood P. Dowd, Sheryl Koontz as Mrs. Ethel Chauvenet, Kay Sheets as Ruth Kelly RN, Othniel Shupert as Duane Wilson, Matt Fletcher as Lyman Sanderson, John Wysong as William R. Chumley, Andrea Wintrow as Betty Chumley, Dean Shipley as Judge Omar Gaffney & Chance O’Neal as EJ Lofgren (Cabbie)

Elwood P. Dowd is an affable man who claims to have an unseen (and presumably imaginary) friend Harvey Ð whom Elwood describes as a six foot, three-and-one-half inch (192 cm) tall pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit. Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone he meets. His social-climbing sister, Veta Simmons, increasingly finds his eccentric behavior embarrassing. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium. When they arrive at the sanitarium, a comedy of errors ensues. When Veta confesses that she has seen Harvey too, the young Dr. Sanderson commits Veta instead of Elwood. But when the mistake comes out, the search is on for Elwood and his invisible companion.
When Elwood shows up at the sanitarium looking for his lost friend Harvey, it seems that the mild-mannered Elwood has had a strange influence on the staff, including sanitarium director Dr. Chumley. Only just before Elwood is to be given an injection that will make him into a “perfectly normal human being, and you know what bastards they are!” (in the words of a taxi driver who has become involved in the proceedings) does Veta realize that she would rather have Elwood the same as he has always been Ð carefree and kind Ð even if it means living with Harvey.
