Andrew Lloyd Webber said, “Having received great critical acclaim in the UK, I am really pleased that Laurence Connor’s new production of PHANTOM is to tour the US again, which will play in tandem with the Broadway production which has recently celebrated 28 years.” Cameron Mackintosh said, “I’m delighted that my new production of PHANTOM has proved to be as spectacular a success as the brilliant original which is still the reigning champion as the longest-running production on Broadway after 28 phenomenal years. This exciting new staging, retaining Maria Björnson’s amazing costumes with a terrific new cast is thrilling audiences and critics alike and gaining a whole new generation of fans eager to see this version again and again.  This new production of PHANTOM has now been seen by over 2 million people across North America since it opened in November 2013 and continues to take the music of the night to dazzling new heights.”

Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is presented by Cameron Mackintosh, The Really Useful Group, and NETworks Presentations. Directed by Laurence Connor (who co-directed the new production of Les Misérables currently running on Broadway and around the world, the award-winning new West End production of Miss Saigon coming to Broadway in 2017 and national tour in 2018, and, most recently, the stage version of the movie School of Rock now playing at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre and nominated for 4 Tony Awards including Best Musical), with choreography by Scott Ambler, set design by Paul Brown, Tony Award®-winning original costume design by Maria Björnson, lighting design by Tony Award®-winner Paule Constable, sound design by Mick Potter, and musical supervision by John Rigby.  The production is overseen by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Mackintosh. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: music by Andrew Lloyd Webber; lyrics by Charles Hart (with additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe); book by Richard Stilgoe and Andrew Lloyd Webber; orchestrations by David Cullen and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it.  He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command.

Cameron Mackintosh’s brilliant original production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA continues performances at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London and in its recording-breaking run at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway and many other cities around the world.

PREMIERES IN CINCINNATI SEPTEMBER 27

TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Tickets are now on sale for the brand new production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, directed by three-time Tony Award® winner Jack O’Brien. This lavish new production will make its Cincinnati premiere September 27 – October 9 at the Aronoff Center as part of a North American tour and Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Cincinnati’s 16/17 Season presented by TriHealth.  Tickets are available at the Aronoff Center Box Office downtown at 650 Walnut Street, online at CincinnatiArts.org or by phone at 513.621.ARTS. For more information, please visit www.TheSoundOfMusicOnTour.com.

BEN DAVIS (Broadway’s Violet, A Little Night Music, La Bohème) will play Captain Georg von Trapp and MELODY BETTS will play The Mother Abbess with MERWIN FOARD as Max Detweiler, TERI HANSEN as Elsa Schraeder, AUSTIN COLBY as Rolf and PAIGE SILVESTER as Liesl.

And introducing Jack O’Brien’s brand new discovery, KERSTIN ANDERSON as Maria Rainer.  A current student at Pace University, Ms. Anderson won the coveted role from hundreds who auditioned.  This is her first national tour.

Director O’Brien had this to say about his leading lady, “In looking over a great American classic, like THE SOUND OF MUSIC, sometimes you stumble on something you wonder if anyone ever saw before.  For instance, I was privileged to actually see Mary Martin in the original production — as I was myself just a junior at the University of Michigan.  She was a great star, and she was giving a ‘great star’s’ performance.  She was at the apex of her career, and she was both brilliant and 46 years old.

“But in reading it privately, something caught my eye:  Maria is probably, as a postulant, no more than six or seven years older than Liesl!  She may be many things — a country lass, a climber-of-trees, a young renegade, but she is clearly NOT an established star!  How interesting!

“I’ve always believed Maria was a ‘star-making’ part, rather than the leading role we remember from the movies and our experience; so I went looking for someone with star-making magic.  And in through the audition door one day walked Kerstin Anderson, still studying at Pace University in New York.  She opened her mouth, she sang, and the tears welled up in my eyes.

“If ever there were an enchanting young woman standing on the brink of discovery — this was it!  And now, the discovery is about to be all of ours!  Please, as I do — welcome her!”

THE SOUND OF MUSIC features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp. This new production is directed by Jack O’Brien (credits include: Hairspray, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Coast of Utopia), choreographed by Danny Mefford (Fun Home, The Bridges of Madison County and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) and music supervision by Andy Einhorn (Bullets Over Broadway, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Brief Encounter, The Light in the Piazza). The design and production team is comprised of Douglas W. Schmidt, set design (Tony Award® nominee: 42nd Street, Into the Woods); Jane Greenwood, costume design (2014 recipient of the Special Tony Award® for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre), Natasha Katz, lighting design (Five-time Tony Award® winner: An American in Paris, Once, Aida, The Coast of Utopia, The Glass Menagerie) and Ken Travis, sound design (Aladdin, Newsies, Memphis). Casting by Telsey + Company/Rachel Hoffman, CSA.

According to director Jack O’Brien, “THE SOUND OF MUSIC has been in our ears for decades, as it deserves to be. But it might be time to look once more, and more closely, at this remarkable work which, I feel, begins to reveal itself as deeper, richer, and more powerful than ever. It’s no longer ‘your mother’s’ familiar SOUND OF MUSIC. We are tearing off the varnish of the past from one of the great glories of our theatergoing experience and making it fresh! This is an opportunity we’ve all longed to create!”

Producer Beth Williams (Grove Entertainment) said, “It’s a great privilege to bring this beloved Rodgers & Hammerstein musical to theaters across North America. We hope that people of all ages will continue to fall in love with it for the first time, or all over again, and that it will truly become one of their ‘favorite things.’ From our distinguished team led by the creative master Jack O’Brien, audiences can expect a truly magnificent production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC.”

In the words of Ted Chapin, President of Rodgers & Hammerstein, “THE SOUND OF MUSIC continues to be the world’s most beloved musical.  When a major national tour was suggested, I not only agreed, but was willing to roll up my sleeves and do whatever I could to fashion a new stage production that would re-engage today’s theatergoing public. The show was originally created for Broadway, and seeing it on stage only reinforces the power of the story and the score. And with Jack O’Brien at the directorial helm – well, we simply couldn’t do better. Landing somewhere between The Coast of Utopia and Hairspray (shows for which Jack won the Tony®), his production is smart, focused, and surprising.”

THE SOUND OF MUSIC enjoyed extraordinary success as the first live television production of a musical in over 50 years when “The Sound of Music Live!” aired on NBC in December, 2013; 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history. The spirited, romantic and beloved musical story of Maria and the Von Trapp Family will once again thrill audiences with such songs as “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss” and the title song.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC will play the Aronoff Center from September 27 – October 9, 2016: Tuesday – Thursday at 7:30PM, Friday at 8:00PM, Saturday at 2:00PM and 8:00PM and Sunday at 1:00PM and 6:30PM. Tickets for THE SOUND OF MUSIC start at $30. They are available at the Aronoff Center Box Office downtown at 650 Walnut Street, online at CincinnatiArts.org or by phone at 513.621.ARTS. Broadway in Cincinnati and Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Announce a “Books for Belle” Drive to Benefit Adopt a Book

MISC_Adopt a Book logoInspired by Belle’s generous heart and love of books in Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Broadway in Cincinnati is collecting children’s books to help further the good work of the inspiring local non-profit Adopt a Book. This organization is dedicated to serving local kids who may have never been to a library and have never had a book of their own.

Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is returning to Cincinnati as a special engagement in the Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Cincinnati season presented by TriHealth.  Produced by NETworks Presentations, this elaborate theatrical production will come to life on stage at the Aronoff Center, April 20 – 24, 2016. For information on the production, visit www.BeautyAndTheBeastOnTour.com.

Founded by two 8-year-old Cincinnati-area siblings in 2011, Adopt a Book has donated over 100,000 books through more than 93 organizations in the Tri-State, with the goal of giving at-risk kids books of their own.

Broadway in Cincinnati general manager Genevieve Miller Holt encourages show attendees to participate.  “We at Broadway in Cincinnati are dedicated to helping local non-profits by creating charity drives that tie in with the themes of the shows we present.  This week’s engagement of Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is sold out, so if every family attending the show brought one book, we could contribute more than 5,000 books to deserving local kids, promoting literacy and a love of reading.  We sincerely hope our generous audiences will join us in this worthy cause.”

BIC_Beauty and the Beast bw logoDisney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST features the Academy Award®-winning score with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman, with additional songs composed by Alan Menken and lyrics by Tim Rice. The book is written by Linda Woolverton.

The play is directed by Rob Roth and choreographed by Matt West, with Costume Design by Ann Hould-Ward (Tony Award® winner for her work on Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST), Lighting Design by Natasha Katz (five-time Tony Award® winner), Scenic Design by Stanley A. Meyer, Sound Design by John Petrafesa Jr. and Music Supervision by Michael Kosarin.

Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is the classic story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress.  If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.

Based on the 1991 Academy Award®-winning animated feature film and celebrating 21 years since its Broadway premiere in 1994, Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is the ninth longest running musical in Broadway history that has become an international sensation seen by over 35 million people worldwide in 22 countries, and translated into 9 different languages. This production launched in February 2010 and has been seen nearly 3 million people while playing over 1,500 performances in all 50 United States and 8 Canadian Provinces.  Currently, there are five productions playing around the world including the North American Tour, Paris, tours in Japan and Germany, and a new international tour (inspired by the North American tour) that will visit over 14 countries in two years.
