The Drama Workshop Acquires Glenmore Bowl Building to Create Performing Arts Center

CINCINNATI—October 11, 2011—The Drama Workshop, a local award winning community theater production company today announced the acquisition of Glenmore Bowl building located at 3716 Glenmore Ave, Cheviot. Building upon its original heritage, the theater group plans to turn the facility into a community performing arts center. Built in 1928, the bowling building was originally designed to serve as a motion picture theater. By virtue of its unique design and 22 ft. ceilings, it provides a near-perfect venue for the performing arts. The theater group eagerly anticipates opening its new performance space in September 2012.

The Drama Workshop has been in existence since 1954, and this is the first time it’s been able to have a permanent home.

“This is monumental for our group in terms of awareness and building an audience and membership base,” said Mary Stone, President of The Drama Workshop. “Now that we have a dedicated venue, we can increase the number of productions and shows in our season as well as secure permanent signage and have a constant presence in the West Side community.”

Local business owners have been very supportive of the idea of having a performing arts center. This building would have been demolished and turned into a parking lot, had it not been for this purchase. However, by brokering three separate real estate deals with local property owners including Rebold Rosenacker & Sexton Funeral Home and a private home owner, The Drama Workshop was able to buy the building from Cheviot Savings Bank. Key to the process has been funeral home owners Jerry Rosenacker and Mike Sexton who went to great lengths to make this exciting development for Cheviot a reality, explained Stone.

“Jerry and Mike believed that having an entertainment option at the Glenmore Bowl was a positive asset to the community and the local businesses; bringing patrons and revenue to the city versus just having the historic building torn down and turned into a parking lot,” said Stone. “They sacrificed one of their own buildings to be torn down in order to make the required parking lot. They also gave up some of their own existing parking spots in their private parking lot so the parking areas could be connected,” said Stone.

Being in the heart of the Cheviot Entertainment District, the performance arts center will be in walking distance from about ten restaurants and bars, providing ample opportunity for patrons to have a complete evening out in Cheviot. The building will also be available to other groups and individuals needing performance space at reasonable rental rates.

Next steps for The Drama Workshop include teaming up with interested individuals, businesses, and organizations to defray the expenses of bringing this exciting concept to life. In the long term, The Drama Workshop is working to identify and apply for operating and capital improvement grants with hopes to open its doors in September 2012. For anyone interested in making a donation or assisting in any way, please contact Mary Stone at mary.stone@possibleworldwide.com or send your tax deductible donation to The Drama Workshop c/o The Glenmore Bowl Building Fund P.O. Box 712 West Chester, OH 45071.

Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Presents Intense, Exciting RED, October 15 – November 12

(CINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park will continue its Marx Theatre season with John Logan’s RED. Winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play, RED begins previews in the Playhouse’s Robert S. Marx Theatre October 15 and continues through November 12.

Set in 1958, RED follows abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko’s life during the period in which he accepted the largest commission in the history of modern art to create murals for the Four Seasons Restaurant in the new Seagram Building in Manhattan. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio in the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing.

The cast for RED features Brian Dykstra as Mark Rothko. Dykstra wrote Hiding Behind Comets, which was produced at the Playhouse in 2004. He also appeared as Cole in Keely and Du in 1994. Matthew Carlson will make his Playhouse debut as Ken.

Steven Woolf, the Artistic Director of the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis since 1986, will direct RED. Woolf has also directed The Crucible, Skylight, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, The Voice of the Prairie and You Can’t Take It With You for the Playhouse.

According to Woolf, “It really is an honor to be able to be able to direct one of the first productions of this play in the country after its Broadway run. Vital and stimulating, RED provides a rare look at how this master painter saw his world at a pivotal point in his career.”

The design team for RED includes Set Designer Michael Ganio, Costume Designer Dorothy Marshall Englis, Lighting Designer Phil Monat and Sound Designer Rusty Wandall. The Stage Manager is Joseph Millett.

Playwright John Logan has written 14 plays, including Never the Sinner, Hauptmann, Scorched Earth and Riverview. His work as a screenwriter includes Sweeney Todd (Golden Globe award); The Aviator (Oscar and Golden Globe nominations), Gladiator (Oscar and Golden nominations) and The Last Samurai.

RED was first produced by the Donmar Warehouse, London, in December 2009. In March 2010, it transferred to Broadway and ran until late June 2010. It was nominated for seven Tony Awards, winning six, including Best Play. All in all, it received the most wins of any other theatrical production that season. It also received the 2010 Drama Desk Award.

Prices for RED range from $25 – $66, depending on day and seat location, and are subject to change. Tickets are just $25 for the preview performances at 8 p.m. Saturday, October 15; 2 p.m. Sunday, October 16; 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 18; and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 19. Some restrictions apply. The official opening night is Thursday, October 20 at 8 p.m.

Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 4 and 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sundays.

The Playhouse is supported, in part, by the generosity of the tens of thousands of individuals and businesses that give to ArtsWave.

The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

A Ghost Story of Literary Proportions

Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati Presents Regional Premiere of
GHOST-WRITER by Michael Hollinger,
October 12-30, 2011

(Cincinnati, Ohio) Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati continues its 2011-2012 season with the regional premiere of GHOST-WRITER by Michael Hollinger, October 12-30, 2011. Directed by D. Lynn Meyers. This marks the second production Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati has presented by Michael Hollinger, the award-winning author of OPUS, which was produced in 2007 receiving rave reviews and sold-out houses. GHOST-WRITER is recipient of a 2010 Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award.

Set in early twentieth-century New York, novelist Franklin Woolsey dies mid-sentence…yet his devoted secretary, Myra, mysteriously continues to take dictation. Attacked by skeptics, the press and Woolsey’s jealous widow, Myra sets out to prove she is more than just an artful forger. Is she trying to steal Woolsey’s legacy now that she cannot have his love, or might she truly possess a gift the world can’t understand? This restrained love story takes place in New York City in 1919, at a time when women were first becoming secretaries, but didn’t have the vote; novelists held on to their 19th-century success as the foremost form of entertainment; and an artist’s slight touch on the arm of his muse was more thrilling than a kiss. The play is loosely based upon the true story of Henry James (Turn of the Screw), an early adopter of the typewriter and whose secretary, Theodora Bosanquet worked with James from 1907 until his death in 1916, one of the most significant periods of his long writing career, and who continued to take dictation after he died.
