Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and U.S. Bank Present Tri-State Holiday Favorite A CHRISTMAS CAROL

December 1 – December 30

(CINCINNATI) – A holiday tradition returns at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park as U.S. Bank presents Charles Dickens’ classic A CHRISTMAS CAROL. A popular favorite with Tri-state families now in its 21st year, runs in the Playhouse’s Robert S. Marx Theatre from December 1 through December 30.

First written in 1843, A CHRISTMAS CAROL was an instant success that sold 10,000 copies in just 10 days in its initial printing and often is credited with reinvigorating our modern holiday celebration. The book became the author’s most popular work, translated into nearly every language and inspiring hundreds of television, film and stage adaptations.

Adapted by Howard Dallin, the Playhouse’s version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL combines faithful storytelling with spellbinding stage magic to bring to life its familiar story of a sinner given one last chance at redemption by four persuasive ghosts. Ebenezer Scrooge undergoes a miraculous Christmas Eve transformation as he views with new eyes his past, present and the possibilities of the future. As he witnesses all those who have improved his life — his first love Belle, his kindhearted employer Fezziwig, his nephew Fred and his heartily abused clerk Bob Cratchit — he realizes that it’s never too late to change his miserly ways. A CHRISTMAS CAROL’s heartwarming message, along with hundreds of costumes and thrilling special effects, helps to make the show one of the Playhouse’s most popular productions each year.

This year’s cast is comprised largely of returning actors. Local favorite Bruce Cromer will be humbugging as Ebenezer Scrooge for the seventh year. Also returning are Dale Hodges as the Ghost of Christmas Past/Mrs. Peake, Keith Jochim as Mr. Fezziwig/Ghost of Christmas Present, Gregory Procaccino as Jacob Marley/Old Joe, Andy Prosky as Bob Cratchit/Schoolmaster Oxlip, Regina Pugh as Mrs. Cratchit/Laundress, Amy Warner as Mrs. Fezziwig/Patience and Nick Rose as Mr. Cupp/Percy/Rich Man at Fezziwig’s. Stephen Skiles plays Mr. Sosser/Topper/Man with Shoe Shine/Guest at Fezziwig’s, Craig Wesley Divino plays Fred, Avery Clark plays Young & Mature Scrooge/Ghost of Christmas Future and Joy Farmer-Clary plays Belle/Catherine Margaret.

Playing carolers and party guests are Margaret Ivey, Lormarev Jones, Katherine Leigh, Lara Miller, Greg Mallios, Aram Monisoff, Carlos Saldaña and Ben Sullivan.

Nine area children also appear in A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Returning are Noah Lentini as Boy Scrooge/Guest at Fezziwig’s/Bootblack, Isabella Siska as Fan/Rich Daughter at Fezziwig’s, Allison Edwards as Belinda Cratchit/Guest at Fezziwig’s, Riley Nattermann as Ignorance/Matthew/Rich Son at Fezziwig’s, N’doumbe Ngom as Want/Guest at Fezziwig’s. Other children include Von Eric Huhn as Tiny Tim, Jack Johnson as Peter Cratchit/Gregory/Apprentice at Fezziwig’s, Carrington Shropshire as George/Charles/Apprentice at Fezziwig’s and Naomi Stoner as Martha Cratchit/Guest at Fezziwig’s.

Playhouse Associate Artistic Director Michael Evan Haney, who’s been associated with A CHRISTMAS CAROL since its first year (including two as the first Bob Cratchit), directs the show for the 19th time.

According to Haney, “One of my greatest joys every year is returning to Howard Dallin’s faithful adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The rich and colorful language of the book has been adapted into dialogue enabling the actors to speak in such a way as to retain the beauty and rhythm of the original prose. It is a beautiful retelling of, as I call it, the second greatest story ever told.”

The design team includes James Leonard Joy (sets), David Murin (costumes), Kirk Bookman (lighting) and David B. Smith (sound). Dee Anne Bryll is the choreographer, and Rebecca N. Childs is the music director. The Stage Manager is Andrea L. Shell. Second Stage Manager is Joseph Millett.

All show times are at 2 p.m. for matinees and 7 p.m. for evening shows to accommodate families with children. Please note the earlier curtain time. There are no performances on Christmas Eve or on Christmas Day.

Tickets for A CHRISTMAS CAROL are on sale now. Prices range from $25-$75, depending on day and seat location. Tickets are $25 (B, C or D seating) for the preview performance at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 1. Tickets for children ages 5 to 12 are $25-$30 (children under 5 not admitted) and teens ages 13 to 19 are $30 (B, C or D seating). All prices are subject to change. The official opening night is Friday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m.

For tickets to A CHRISTMAS CAROL or for more information, call the Playhouse box office at 513/421-3888 (toll-free in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana at 800/582-3208) or visit http://www.cincyplay.com. A special A CHRISTMAS CAROL website at www.achristmascarol.cincyplay.com includes games, recipes, videos and much more.

At any time between now and December 30, audience members can bring a new, unwrapped toy (appropriate for children up to age 13 and minimum $10 retail value) to the Playhouse and place it in the Toys for Tots barrel by the box office. The Marines will not accept used or second-hand toys or toys that have been removed from their original packaging. Similarly, plush or stuffed dolls that are not sold in a box or carton cannot be distributed. The Toys for Tots Foundation was created to help needy and underprivileged children experience the joys of Christmas. All toys donated after December 14 will be used for Christmas 2012.

This holiday season, the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County will offer visitors at its downtown branch the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. The library will play host to a special exhibit highlighting the history and evolution of the Playhouse’s holiday favorite over the past 20 years. Props and costume pieces, set illustrations, photos and more will be featured in the display. The exhibit will be on view in the atrium of the Main Library beginning now through the beginning of January. More information on the library’s exhibits program is available at www.cincinnatilibrary.org.

CCM’s Fall Dance Concert Spotlights New Choreography

Through a National Endowment for the Arts grant, the College-Conservatory of Music Dance Division presents Twyla Tharp’s ballet
THE STORY TELLER

CINCINNATI, OH – The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) Ballet Ensemble is excited to present its Fall Dance Concert December 2-4. The concert features new and innovative programming, including Twyla Tharp’s THE STORY TELLER, which recently made its North American premier, along with a newly premiered dance choreographed by CCM’s Shellie Cash and other works.

Through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, CCM’s Dance Division presents THE STORY TELLER staged by guest artist Benjamin Bowman with music by Kiyoung Kim. THE STORY TELLER originally premiered in 1997 with The Australian Ballet and had its North American premier earlier this year with the Nashville Ballet. The ballet chronicles the life of one character through movements of four dancers and this cutting-edge performance promises to impress with its seamless expression and athleticism.

The program will also include “Siete Canciones Populares Españolas” (“Seven Spanish Folksongs”) choreographed by Dance Division Head Shellie Cash to music composed by Manuel de Falla for tenor and piano. The work had its world-premier in October of this year at CCM’s Sueños de España (Dreams of Spain) concert.

Additionally the concert will showcase Paquita (Act II) with music by Ludwig Minkus, restaged by CCM Professor Jiang Qi. Jiang will also restage Danish choreographer August Bournonville’s Flower Festival in Genzano pas de deux to music originally by Matthias Strebinger and adapted by Holger Simon Pauli.

Students and audiences alike will have the opportunity on Tuesday, Nov. 29, to meet the guest artist, Benjamin Bowman, at 9:30 a.m. in CCM’s Baur Room. This event is free and open to the public.

About Benjamin Bowman
Benjamin G. Bowman began his studies in dance after serendipitously being offered a chance to study ballet at the North Carolina School of the Arts as part of a pilot outreach program in the Winston-Salem public schools. After moving to Kansas City, Missouri, Bowman was fortunate in studying with world-class instructors such as Todd Bolender, Una Kai, Jonathan Watts, Diana Adams and Eckhard Heidrich. He undertook further studies as a summer scholarship student at both the School of American Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet School, and both institutions eventually awarded him scholarships as a full-time student.

Bowman’s professional career began with the Kansas City Ballet where he performed works by such choreographers as Bolender, Balanchine, Christiansen, William Dollar and Alvin Ailey. He then spent five years with the Fort Worth Ballet as a principal dancer before joining New York City Ballet (NYCB) in 1993. During his tenure with NYCB he performed in a diverse repertoire of existing works by Balanchine, Martens and Robbins as well as being involved in the creation of new works by Robbins, Martens and other notables. In 2000 Bowman was invited to join Twyla Tharp Dance and toured extensively for the next two years. With Twyla Tharp Dance he was privileged to originate the role of James in the hit Broadway show Movin’ Out. Bowman has worked on-stage as both a dancer and actor, performing works by Kathy Posin, Nilas Martens and John Selya and in the re-imagined “Garden of Earthly Delights” by Martha Clarke.

As a director and choreographer, he has most recently set Twyla Tharp’s Surfer at the River Styx with Company C Contemporary Ballet in Walnut Creek, California, Tharp’s The Storyteller with the Nashville Ballet, and co-choreographed the critically acclaimed Indoor Fireworks set to the music of Elvis Costello with Company C founder Charles Anderson.

Bowman currently resides in New York City.

Know Theatre of Cincinnati to screen MISS REPRESENTATION

Documentary film aims to end sexism in the media and empower women

Know Theatre of Cincinnati is pleased to announce the Cincinnati screening of the documentary film MISS REPRESENTATION on December 7, 2011 at 7pm. Tickets for this special event are $10 and can be purchased at knowtheatre.com or by calling the box office at 513.300.5669 (KNOW).

Following its premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, the documentary feature film MISS REPRESENTATION (a Girls’ Club Entertainment production) has been widely screened during the summer and fall at schools, universities, corporations, government, institutions, community organizations and film festivals. The film was premiered on OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) on October 20, 2011.

Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, MISS REPRESENTATION exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

MISS REPRESENTATION includes stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics like Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Rosario Dawson, Jackson Katz, Jean Kilbourne, and Gloria Steinem. The film offers startling facts and statistics that will leave audiences shaken and armed with a new perspective.

“I first saw the trailer on the internet and was drawn in by it immediately,” says Eric Vosmeier, Producing Artistic Director of Know Theatre. “This film addresses topics that are not often thought about and even more rarely discussed. We love these kinds of projects at Know Theatre and we’re honored to present the first Cincinnati screening of the film. I believe it is important to challenge these kinds of ingrained conventions and to start talking about making changes to the status quo.”

Know Theatre of Cincinnati presents ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S BIG GAY DANCE PARTY

Know Theatre is pleased to announce the holiday production of the 2011-2012 Season, ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S BIG GAY DANCE PARTY by Aaron Loeb. The production is directed by Eric Vosmeier, Know Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director, with scenic and lighting design by Andrew Hungerford, costume design by Noelle Wedig, and sound design by Doug Borntrager. The production will show November 26 –December 23, 2011.

Ms. Harmony Green’s fourth-grade class presents a new take on their traditional Christmas pageant in a rural Illinois town. The production sets off a firestorm of controversy when it calls into question Honest Abe’s sexual orientation – based on historical facts. This thought-provoking, laugh-out-loud funny, and uniquely American story unfolds, offering surprises at every turn. Each of the three acts lets the audience see the story from a different character’s viewpoint. Oh, and of course, plenty of big gay dancing.

“I’m thrilled to bring together a very talented group of actors, most of which have never performed together or at Know Theatre,” says Vosmeier. “The play is a totally different way of telling a complex story, while creating a thoroughly hilarious and poignant script.”

The production features a cast of seven actors who all play multiple characters, and all of them play the role of Abraham Lincoln periodically through the play. Robert Pavlovich, last seen at Know Theatre in Eurydice and Adding Machine: A Musical, will play District Attorney Tom Hauser, who is running for Governor of Illinois. Visiting from New York City, Torie Wiggins returns to Cincinnati to play the roles of Regina Lincoln, an Illinois State Senator also running for Governor of Illinois, and Esmerelda Diaz, a photographer for The New York Times. Torie was last seen in Cincinnati performing her one-woman show Your Negro Tour Guide at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival in 2009 and at Ensemble Theatre in 2010. New to Know Theatre’s stage is Randy Bailey, who was recently seen at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival in Peyote Business Lunch, Tantric Acting at the Holiday Inn, and The Success Show. Randy plays Lloyd, a political operative from Washington assisting Tom Hauser in the case. Also new to Know Theatre, Jason Podplesky who recently returned to Cincinnati after working in New York City, plays Anton, a New York Times reporting visiting Menard County to cover the trail. Elizabeth Harris, who performed with Know Theatre in Another American, Matt and Ben, and The Eight Reindeer Monologues, will be playing Ms. Harmony Green, the teacher on trial for the four year olds controversial performances. Annie Kalahurka, recently seen at Know Theatre in Sideways Stories from Wayside School and The Dragon, will play Tina, Regina Lincoln’s legislative aide. Last but not least, a new addition to Know Theatre’s staff as Associate Company Member, is Kellen York, is a recent graduate of the College Conservatory of Music. Kellen has appeared at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival in Anna & The Slut and the (almost) chosen one, Guns and Chickens, and Medea. Kellen will be playing Jerry, the son of Tom Hauser and operator of the town pie shop.

This show was originally commissioned by PlayGround and received its world premiere at the SF Playhouse in 2009 and won “Best New Play” from the Bay Area Critics Circle. It continued with a run at the 2009 New York International Fringe Festival where it was awarded their “Outstanding Play” award, and in the summer of 2010, the production enjoyed a short Off-Broadway run.

Know Theatre has partnered with the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) of Cincinnati for our Pay-What-You-Can preview performance on Friday November 25 at 8pm. Half of all proceeds will support vision of a future in which every child learns to respect and accept all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. Seating is first come first served and tickets will be available beginning at 7pm.

This season, tickets are $15 in advance and $18 the week of the performance (beginning Mondays at noon). Season subscription five-show flexible passes are available for $75 and guarantees the advance ticket price all season long. Tickets can be purchased by visiting knowtheatre.com or by calling the box office at 513.300.KNOW (5669)
