The competitive dance for the evening was the Samba, and each dance pair had 90 seconds to woo the crowd and the judges.

Event emcees were Chris O’Brien & Janeen Coyle (“Married With Microphones,” 103.5 WGRR-FM). The four competition judges were Terry Foster (Dancing for the Stars 2010 alum; RN, St. Elizabeth Health Care; community volunteer), Mandy Franceschina (Managing Director, Step-N-Out Studio; creator, Broadway Blast), Desiree Mainous (Arthur Murray Dance Studio – Cincinnati), and Jenell Walton (reporter, The List; Dancing for the Stars 2008 winner).

The Dancing for the Stars 2013 Committee: Dr. Tracey Skale, M.D , Chair (winner, Dancing for the Stars 2011), Christina Bolden, Terry Foster, Sue Gilkey, Jim Howland, Ginger Loftin, Rosemary Schlachter, and Phil Schworer.

  • A traditional Samba by Brazilian-born Dr. Dora Savani, who wore an authentic, ruffled bronze dress that she purchased in Brazil, and who had family and friends travel all the way from Brazil to cheer her on.
  • A rip-roarin’ Western Samba to the popular country song “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” by Sherry Gruden and her dance pro Jeremy Mainous (the same song to which Drew Lachey and Cheryl Burke danced to win Season 2 of ABC-TV’s Dancing with the Stars).
  • LOCAL 12 WKRC’s “Dance Friday” Bob Herzog, who began his athletic Samba with a “toe touch” leap from the stage (and multiple leaps afterward), and wore a much-talked-about, chest-hair revealing black shirt that was a hit with the judges and the audience.
  • Hengameh Nassef took control of the dance floor in a bright lemon-yellow, fringe-covered dress to the delight of her many international fans.
  • A sexy and chic Samba by Amy Scalia in a black-feathered mini-skirt, highlighted by an extended solo during which she was the only dancer on the floor for the beginning of the routine.
  • The out-of-character, but Samba-appropriate, pelvic thrusts by Robert Killins delighted the audience.
  • The seductive moves of Mike Selker to Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel,” which attracted a lovely trio of young women to Mike on the dance floor… during the dance!
  • A mesmerizing Classical Indian dance showcase performance by 2013 Overture Award winner, Angela Vettikkal, wowed the audience.
  • The sold-out event had an exceptionally responsive, raucous, and energetic audience, which included large cheering sections holding signs with various messages and making a loud racket with a variety of noise-makers (including air horns, screaming, stamping feet, etc.).
  • After the competition, the dance floor at the Music Hall Ballroom filled with the evening’s guests who danced the night away to music by DJ Rockin’ Ron from 103.5 WGRR.
  • Dancing for the Stars 2013 roving-reporter and man-about-town, Joe Rigotti, with his sly and humorous commentary about the competition’s fashion, celebs, and dance moves.
  • Emcees Chris & Janeen kept the crowd entertained between the stars’ dance routines.

THE OVERTURE AWARDS
The Overture Awards Scholarship Competition is the largest locally-run arts scholarship competition in the country. The program annually provides a $3,000 scholarship to six area high school students for education and training, with 18 finalists each winning a $500 scholarship. Each year, more than 450 students are nominated by their schools to compete in one of six artistic disciplines: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theater, Visual Art or Vocal Music. There are three levels of competition: Regional, Semi-Final, and Final.

The Overture Awards was developed to recognize, encourage, and reward excellence in the arts among Tri-state students in grades 9-12. It also provides students an opportunity to share their talents and interests among their peers in a supportive environment outside of their individual schools. Now in its 17th year, The Overture Awards was launched in 1996 by the Cinergy Foundation and Leadership Cincinnati (a Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce program).

CINCINNATI ARTS ASSOCIATION
Founded in 1992, the Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is a not-for-profit organization that oversees the programming and management of the Tri-state’s finest performing arts venues – the Aronoff Center for the Arts and Music Hall – and is dedicated to supporting performing and visual arts. Each year, CAA presents a diverse schedule of events; serves more than 700,000 people in its venues; features the work of talented local, regional, and national artists in the Weston Art Gallery (located in the Aronoff Center); and supports the work of more than one dozen resident companies. Since the inception of its acclaimed arts education programs in 1995, CAA has reached more than 1.3 million students.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized The Know Theatre’s COCK with 3 LCT nominations, as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production: Direction (Brian Robertson), Ensemble Acting, and scenic design (Andrew Hungerford).

In this tense comedy about sexual identity, COCK explores one man’s choices about which path of love to pursue. When John takes a break from his longtime boyfriend, the last thing he expects is to fall in love with a woman. Trapped between two lovers, John feels the physical and emotional tug of both, and neither party wants to lose the battle for his heart. John has a choice to make as he navigates his sexuality, selfhood, and the intersection of the two.

Panelists praised Brian Robertson for his “brilliant” direction—“He has no props, no set furnishings to work with…he keeps the characters in constant, purposeful motion.” The ensemble “worked incredibly well together, which was make-or-break for this production”; “a superb cast”. Of Andrew Hungerford’s set design, panelists reported: “The positioning of the uncomfortable platform seating set on each side with the stage in the center with no set pieces was an incredible, well-thought out design… The audience was forced to look at each other with the actors in the foreground throughout the play,” Overall, panelists described the production as “an intimate, emotional play in a unique setting”—“ audiences will find it entertaining and fascinating”.

COCK continues through March 11th. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.knowtheatre.com.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

Keaton’s THE GENERAL at The Carnegie on May 2

TC_The GeneralBuster Keaton’s THE GENERAL
A SILENT FILM WITH LIVE MUSIC

Ranked among the greatest films of all time,
silent film screened with live modern underscoring

(Covington, KY) A train engineer, a stolen locomotive (“The General”) and the woman he loves – put these three characters together and you have what has been hailed as one of the greatest films ever made – Buster Keaton’s THE GENERAL.

Coming to The Carnegie’s Otto M. Budig Theatre on Thursday, May 2 at 7:30pm, renowned New England silent film accompanist Jeff Rapsis provides a live modern underscoring to Buster Keaton’s 1926 classic “The General.” Showcasing the storytelling and comic mastery of the man whom Roger Ebert called “arguably, the greatest actor-director in the history of the movies,” “The General” features Keaton as a lovelorn train engineer trying to foil a devious hijacking plot during the Civil War. The evening includes a post-show meet-n-greet with the accompanist in the Ohio National Financial Services Gallery.

Jeff Rapsis’ Original Score
In accompanying silent films, Jeff Rapsis’ technique is to make use of the full range of film scoring vocabulary to help bring the silent movie to life for contemporary audiences. Rapsis improvises his scores in real time, often drawing from original ideas or material he’s created earlier in previewing a film.

“It’s kind of a high-wire act, but a score that’s at least partly improvised lends a freshness and spontaneity to a screening that’s not present when everything’s prepared in advance,” Rapsis says. “If I’m buried in sheet music, it’s hard to respond to the emotional line of a film in real time as it unfolds on the screen. I think it is all part of what makes silent film a unique art unto itself.”

One of the Greatest American Movies Of All Time
Directed by, and starring, Buster Keaton, “The General” follows Western & Atlantic train engineer, Johnnie Gray (Buster Keaton) at the start of the Civil War. When plans to hijack his train by Union soldiers are revealed, Keaton embarks on a journey to not only save “The General,” but to save and win back his true love, Annabelle Lee. While “The General” was not initially well received by critics when it premiered in 1926, the American Film Institute places “The General“ 18th on its list of the 100 greatest movies of all time.

About Jeff Rapsis
Accompanist Jeff Rapsis developed a fascination with silent film during his teenage years. But it took until middle age for the New Hampshire newspaper publisher to combine his interest in vintage cinema with a lifelong passion for music and begin accompanying silent films in live performance.

Today, Rapsis accompanies about 70 silent film screenings a year in venues ranging from small theaters in his home base of northern New England to prestigious events such as the Kansas Silent Film Festival, where he contributes live music each year. Rapsis, who often speaks and writes about silent film and accompaniment, maintains a Web site about his work at www.jeffrapsis.com.

Ticketing
Tickets for Buster Keaton’s “The General” – A Silent Film with Live Music are $19; $16 for Carnegie Members, WVXU Perks and Enjoy the Arts Members and students. Tickets can be purchased through The Carnegie Box Office, open Tuesday through Friday noon – 5pm, in person or by phone at (859) 957-1940. Tickets are also available online at www.thecarnegie.com.

The 2012-2013 Carnegie in Concert Series is sponsored by the Otto M. Budig Family Foundation.

Carnegie In Concert Series
Carnegie in Concert strives to break the mold of chamber music offerings from yesteryear. The series challenges established programming norms by blending traditional string quartets, wind ensembles, and solo piano performances with gospel, jazz, musical theatre, boogie woogie, and a cadre of other musical styles. The relationship between performer and audience is also re-imagined through an open dialogue revealing the essence of the selections and their meaning to the performers. The comfortable and intimate Otto M. Budig Theatre provides a unique environment for a unique concert experience, complete with a cash bar in the beautiful Carnegie Galleries.

About The Carnegie
The Carnegie is a multidisciplinary arts venue serving the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati community. The Carnegie is home to the Carnegie Galleries, comprised of more than 6,000 square feet of gallery space where emerging and established artists exhibit in multiple shows throughout the year; the Eva G. Farris Education Center, which provides arts education to thousands of children, many of whom are at or below the poverty level; and the newly renovated 465-seat Otto M. Budig Theatre, which offers an affordable theatre space for local, up-and-coming and established production companies and is home to The Carnegie’s Theatre and Concert Series.

The Carnegie receives ongoing operating support from ArtsWave, Kenton County Fiscal Courts, the Kentucky Arts Council and the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr. / US Bank Foundation. For more information, visit www.thecarnegie.com or call (859) 491-2030.
