The Human Race continues its 31st Season with the Midwest Premiere of
Brian Parks’s THE HOUSE, November 2 – 19, 2017 at the Loft Theatre

(Dayton, OH) —This November, The Human Race Theatre Company (HRTC) is getting into the real estate game with The House. After twenty years in their dream house, Martyn and Shanny Redmond are downsizing and just sold their home directly to the perfect thirtysomething couple, Fischer and Lindsay Libett. Or so they thought. Sure that the Libetts will keep the place exactly as they’re leaving it, the Redmonds invite them for drinks, casual conversation and to hand over the keys. But when Fischer and Lindsay reveal they are planning major renovations, Martyn and Shanny have second thoughts and a pleasant get together becomes an outrageously hilarious battle of wills with over-the-top results.

Margarett Perry (HRTC’s Hail Mary!, One Slight Hitch, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, and many more), returns to The Race to direct The House. Perry previously directed the world premiere of The House of The Kitchen Theatre in Ithica, NY.

Brian Parks’s (Playwright) plays have been produced in New York City as well as several cities across the U.S. The plays have also been staged internationally, in London, Edinburgh, Ireland, Adelaide, Heidelberg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Oberzeiring, Austria. His play Americana Absurdum helped launch the New York International Fringe Festival in 1997, where it also won the Best Writing Award.

The preview performance of The House is Thursday, November 2. Opening night is Friday, November 3.

CAST AND DESIGN TEAM

The cast of four includes three Human Race veterans as well as a face new to local audiences.

Vince Gatton (Cock and Clean Alternatives at the Kitchen Theatre with director Margarett Perry; Leigh Fondakowski’s SPILL at Ensemble Studio Theatre; Fully Committed at Barrrington Stage Company) is “Fischer Libett.” This is Gatton’s first production at HRTC. Alex Sunderhaus (Lewis Black’s One Slight Hitch, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, August: Osage County.) plays his wife, “Lindsay Libett.” Resident Artist Scott Stoney (Shenandoah, Copenhagen, Seussical, Angels in America.) is “Martyn Redmond.” This is Stoney’s 72nd Human Race production as an actor. Resident Artist Caitlin Larsen (Steel Magnolias, Fiddler on the Roof, Moonlight and Magnolias, Lend Me a Tenor; Broadway: Cabaret, 1987 Revival with Joel Grey) plays his wife, “Shanny Redmond.”

Ray Zupp (scenic designer) returns to The Human Race Theatre having last designed Lewis Black’s One Slight Hitch. In the last decade, he has worked as a scenic artist on numerous productions for The Human Race Theatre. Costume designer Janet G. Powell returns for her fourth Human Race production with director Perry. Resident Artists John Rensel (lighting designer) and Jay Brunner (sound designer) round out the design team. Lexi Muller is the production stage manager.

Biographies on the cast and creative team can be found on The Human Race Theatre Company’s website.

The Human Race Theatre Company’s production of The House is sponsored by Marion’s Piazza, Houser Asphalt & Concrete, Burhill Leasing, Barbara E. Blauman, Miami Valley Fair Housing.

CINCINNATI—Award-winning actor/director/playwright Frank Ferrante recreates his PBS, New York and London acclaimed portrayal of legendary comedian Groucho Marx at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Nov. 4 through Dec. 17 in AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO.

Ferrante was described by The New York Times as “the greatest living interpreter of Groucho Marx’s material.” Called “masterful” by the Chicago Tribune and “a tour-de-force” by Variety, this fast-paced 90-minute show contains all the best Groucho one-liners, anecdotes and songs.

“The incomparable Frank Ferrante is the nation’s foremost performer of Groucho Marx’s work,” says Blake Robison, artistic director. “He truly brings a legend to life. His hilarious antics are sure to entertain longtime fans of the Marx Brothers, while introducing younger generations to his comic genius.”

Ferrante portrays the young Groucho of stage and film and reacquaints us with the likes of brothers Harpo, Chico, Zeppo and Gummo, Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields, Greta Garbo and MGM’s Louis B. Mayer, among other legendary celebrities. The show also incorporates interaction with the audience.

“I never know what is going to happen from show to show,” Ferrante says. “We have people come back two and three times to see the show because the improvisation is so heavy that every night is a different experience.”

Ferrante won the 1987 New York’s Theatre World Award and was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award for portraying Groucho Marx in Groucho: A Life in Revue Starring Frank Ferrante, which was a long-running Off-Broadway play.  He reprised the role in London’s West End and was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for ‘Comedy Performance of the Year.’ Ferrante also played the same part Groucho Marx performed in Off-Broadway revivals of The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers.

Findlay Market and Cincinnati Arts Association Announce Partnership to Enhance Concession Experience at Music Hall

CAA FA_logo

New items to include Findlay Market Tasting Trays
and
a signature craft cocktail by Molly Wellman

(Cincinnati, OH) – Findlay Market and the Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) are pleased to announce a partnership to enhance the guest experience at Music Hall during its Grand Opening Celebration and beyond.  The historic performing arts venue reopens to the public this weekend after an extensive renovation with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s Music Hall Grand Opening Weekend concerts on Friday-Saturday, October 6-7 at 8:00 PM and a “Re(new)ed Community Open House Celebration,” presented by ArtsWave, on Saturday, October 7 from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, featuring more than fifty performances and activities.

Findlay Market, Ohio’s oldest continuously operated public market, is a trusted source for high quality, locally sourced, and fresh food and will be working with independently-owned market vendors to create “Findlay Market Tasting Trays” for Music Hall guests.

Each Findlay Market Tasting Tray will feature an individual Findlay Market or Findlay Kitchen business.  The vendors will rotate on a monthly basis, giving Music Hall guests the opportunity to taste a variety of small bites from a diverse group of foodpreneurs.  The program will kick off this month with two merchants: Dean’s Mediterranean Imports and The Rhined.

Marianne Hamilton, Director of Food Innovation for the Corporation for Findlay Market, has been working with CAA and Findlay Market vendors for more than a year on this project.  “We are thrilled to be in partnership with the newly reopened Music Hall, allowing us to extend the unparalleled new guest experience to exciting new culinary offerings,” said Hamilton. “This is a unique opportunity for guests to enjoy a tasting of the local artisan food scene, handcrafted by new and longtime Findlay Market favorites.”

Findlay Kitchen, Findlay Market’s shared use incubator commercial kitchen, and the market will also offer budding food entrepreneurs the opportunity to showcase their wares to Music Hall audiences with occasional “pop-up” experiences in addition to items available at the concession stands.

Supporting CAA and Findlay Market in this creative endeavor is a Culinary Council of some of Cincinnati’s brightest food and beverage stars.  Serving in an advisory capacity, these friends of Music Hall and Findlay Market and nationally-recognized “tastemakers” are contributing their expertise to help develop exciting new concepts that can be translated into the theater setting.  Serving on this esteemed committee are:

  • Jean-Robert de Cavel (JR Group:  Jean-Robert’s Table, Restaurant L , French Crust Café and Bistro, Le Bar a Boeuf, etc.)
  • David Falk (Boca Restaurant Group: Boca, Nada, Sotto)
  • Marianne Hamilton (Findlay Market)
  • Kevin Hart (HART & CRU)
  • Molly Wellmann (Wellmann’s Brands).

“We are very excited about our new partnership between Findlay Market and Music Hall – two National Historic Landmarks which are connected by the Cincinnati Connector Streetcar,” said Scott Santangelo, CAA’s Director of Operations – Music Hall. “We look forward to sharing these new concession options with our Music Hall guests, and are grateful to our friends at Findlay Market, their vendors, and our illustrious Culinary Council of food and beverage experts for their invaluable support and advice.”

The partnership between Findlay Market and CAA grew out of a larger Music Hall Guest Experience initiative being led by the creative agency Brave Berlin.  The goal of the initiative is to enhance the guest experience at Music Hall in a variety of areas, including concessions.  In addition to the Findlay Market Tasting Trays, Music Hall will feature the following enhanced concession options:

  • A signature craft cocktail – “The Rose Window” – created by Cincinnati’s pre-eminent mixologist, Molly Wellmann.  The vodka based cocktail is made with Cointreau, cranberry juice and rose water.
  • Local craft beers, including Rhinegeist Bubbles, Truth, and Cougar
  • Premium wine selections in partnership with Hart & Cru
  • The addition of Bulleit Bourbon, Hendricks Gin, and Titos Vodka as premium liquor options
  • Wine flights and craft cocktails for select Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) events
  • Premium chocolates from Divine’s European Chocolates, including milk- and dark-chocolate Turtles and hand-dipped caramel rods
  • Premium drip coffee by local fair trade coffee provider, Oakley Artisan Roasters

FINDLAY MARKET
The Corporation for Findlay Market (CFFM) is a private non-profit corporation founded in 2000 to manage Findlay Market following its renovation in 2002 and 2003. On July 1, 2004, CFFM and the City of Cincinnati entered into a lease and management agreement that authorize CFFM to manage and operate the market. The Corporation for Findlay Market is a tax-exempt 501(C)3 organization.

CINCINNATI MUSIC HALL
Cincinnati’s historic performing arts venue reopens on October 7, 2017 after a stunning and extensive $143 renovation – one of the most impressive and all-encompassing transformations in the venue’s history. Built in 1878 with private money raised from what is believed to be the nation’s first matching grant fund drive, this classic entertainment venue is considered one of the best and most beautiful concert theaters in the world, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975. Home to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (the sixth oldest symphony orchestra in the country), the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the Cincinnati Opera (the nation’s second-oldest opera company), the Cincinnati Ballet, and the May Festival (the longest-running choral festival in the Western hemisphere), Music Hall originally served the City as its first convention center.

CINCINNATI ARTS ASSOCIATION
Founded in 1992, the Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is a not-for-profit organization that oversees the programming and management of two of the Tri-state’s finest performing arts venues – the Aronoff Center for the Arts and Music Hall – and is dedicated to supporting performing and visual arts. Each year, CAA presents a diverse schedule of events; serves upwards of 700,000 people in its venues; features the work of talented local, regional, and national artists in the Weston Art Gallery (located in the Aronoff Center); and supports the work of more than one dozen resident companies, including Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati May Festival, Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Symphony/Pops Orchestras, and Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Cincinnati, presented by TriHealth. Since the inception of its acclaimed arts education programs in 1995, CAA has reached more than 1.5 million students.

CCM’s Sesquicentennial Mainstage Series Presents SEUSSICAL

CCM_Seussical promo

Composed by CCM alumnus Stephen Flaherty, this musical fable is based on some of Dr. Seuss’ most beloved stories. Tickets available through the CCM Box Office.

UC’s College-Conservatory of Music presents the second installment of its 2017-18 Mainstage Series with Seussical, a musical tale of wonder and excitement for children and grown-ups alike. Composed by Stephen Flaherty (BM Composition, 1982) and Lynn AhrensSeussical opens at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, in Patricia Corbett Theater.

Audiences will recognize some of Dr. Seuss’ timeless characters in the show, including The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Yertle the Turtle, and, of course, The Grinch. Seussical embraces the pizzazz and quirk of Dr. Seuss’ tales with catchy songs and elaborate, dazzling costumes.

“There is so much joy and life in these stories and in all of the music of Seussical,” says Vince DeGeorge, CCM assistant professor and Joseph Weinberger Chair of Acting for the Lyric Stage. “As the director and choreographer, my job has been to honor the humanity that is the driving force behind the famous original source material and this beautifully crafted musical.”

The musical itself is closely tied to CCM; composer Stephen Flaherty graduated from CCM in 1982 with a Bachelor of Music in Composition. He often works with lyricist Lynn Ahrens to create musicals. The Tony Award-winning duo has collaborated on AnastasiaOnce on This Island and Ragtime.

“I truly believe that Seussical is one of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens’ most inventive, playful and heartfelt scores,” DeGeorge says. “It has always been one of my favorites. The fact that Stephen Flaherty is an alumnus of CCM makes doing this project that much more meaningful for all of us involved.”

Although this will be a fairly traditional staging of Seussical, DeGeorge says that plenty of surprises are in store for audiences. While the design team attempted to capture the essence of Dr. Seuss’ beloved characters, they also strove for an original aesthetic and a truly unique production.

Travel to the magical world of Dr. Seuss with CCM’s production of Seussical, presented Oct. 19-22 and Oct. 25-29, 2017, in Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are $31-35 for adults, $22-25 for non-UC students and $18-21 for UC students with a valid ID. Additional student discounts are available through the CCM Box Office.

Tickets can be purchased in person at the CCM Box Office, over the telephone at 513-556-4183 or online at ccm.uc.edu/boxoffice/mainstage/seussical.

Transforming Pink Floyd’s 1979 album The Wall onto the operatic stage, Another Brick in the Wall tells the semi-autobiographical story of a rock star’s troubled journey after lashing out at an admiring concertgoer. Another Brick in the Wall completely transforms Roger Waters’s original work into a standard operatic form, with eight soloists, 48 chorus members, and a 70-piece orchestra. The opera received its world premiere at Opéra de Montréal in March 2017, with ten sold-out performances. Cincinnati Opera is a co-producer of the opera with Productions Opéra Concept M.P., Inc., led by executive director Pierre Dufour.

Singing the role of the progressive-rock superstar Pink is rising Canadian baritone Nathan Keoughan in his Cincinnati Opera debut. Canadian soprano France Bellemare will sing the role of Pink’s mother. A finalist in the 2015 Montreal International Music Competition, Times Argus hailed Bellemare’s performance as exploding with “exhilarating beauty and passion.” Singing the role of Pink’s father is French-Canadian tenor Jean-Michel Richer. Canadian soprano Caroline Bleau, recognized for her “excellent lyric soprano” and “beautiful presence on stage” (ResMusica) will sing the role of Pink’s wife. Bellemare, Richer, and Bleau are reprising their roles from the world premiere, and all are making their Cincinnati Opera debuts.

Reprising his conducting role from the world premiere is Canadian Alain Trudel. The concept and stage direction for the production was created by Dominic Champagne, renowned for his work on such Cirque de Soleil productions as LOVEVarekai, and Zumanity. Set design is by Stéphane Roy, with costumes by Marie-Chantale Vaillancourt. The video designer is Johnny Ranger, and the lighting design is by Étienne Boucher. Sound design and numeric orchestration are by Louis Dufort.
