ETC Announces Winner of Fourth Annual PLAY/WRITE Collegiate Playwriting Competition

ETC_logoENSEMBLE THEATRE CINCINNATI ANNOUNCES WINNER OF FOURTH ANNUAL
PLAY/WRITE: THE JACKIE DEMALINE REGIONAL COLLEGIATE PLAYWRITING COMPETITION

(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) is pleased to announce the winner of the fourth annual PLAY/write: The Jackie Demaline Regional Collegiate Playwriting Competition. The annual collegiate competition nurtures local aspiring dramatists who are helping to shape the future of American theatre and provides a $2,500 juried cash award to support the early work and career of each winner along with staged professional readings of their scripts.

The winner of this year’s prize is Steven Strafford (Ohio University) for his play The Match Game, which will receive a full-length staged professional reading on July 31, 2022, at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati.

Judges found Strafford’s The Match Game very well constructed, humorous, and highly entertaining all while navigating some heavier topics as a diagnosis of cancer, the loss of trust, and family dysfunction. The panel would also like to recognize the following playwrights with Honorable Mentions in this year’s competition:  Both Hands by Joyce Evelyn Deaton (Northern Kentucky University), The Heat by David Schwartz (University of Cincinnati), and The End of the World by Baxter Whitehead (Miami University).

About the Competition
The competition commemorates the life and work of writer, critic, and theatre enthusiast, Jackie Demaline. A passionate arts advocate, Ms. Demaline served as an important catalyst for change in the theater community and was an entertainment writer and editor for numerous publications. Her legacy lives on through this competition, providing professional development for emerging writers, amplifying new voices and perspectives, and kick-starting arts careers.

About the Play
The Match Game by Steven Strafford

Steph has cancer, but that’s the least of her problems today. Her estranged father, who may or may not have dementia, has come to live with her. Her suspicious mom, her gay brother and his sweet, young, and somewhat dim-witted boyfriend, her absent father, and her precocious daughter will all be in attendance at an ad-hoc birthday party, complete with the set of a regional production of a Broadway musical. Can Steph navigate her family to get what she wants, or maybe more importantly, what she needs?

About the Playwright
Steven Strafford is a Brooklyn-born playwright and actor. He is the author of the award-winning solo play, Methtacular!, which he has performed across the country in LORT theaters, universities, and LGBTQ+ spaces and which was recorded at Steppenwolf’s 1700 Theater in 2019. His soon-to-be-published play Small Jokes About Monsters won the New American Voices Contest in 2016, was a semi-finalist for The O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, and won the 2022 Ready-To-Publish Award from SETC and StageRights. Small Jokes About Monsters had productions in Houston at Landing Theatre, (nominated for Outstanding New Play, Houston Theater Awards), Chicago at 16th Street Theater, and in Sioux City at The Lamb Theater. His play Greater Illinois was a semifinalist in the 2021 O’Neill National Playwrights Conference and a finalist for the Jackie Demaline Regional Collegiate Playwriting Competition at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. The play also received a workshop with Tantrum East in NYC. His short play Use Your Noodles was produced at Middlesex College, Ohio University, and Colby College. Methtacular! will be included in a forthcoming anthology of solo plays from Opus Books. His essay, “College Dreams,” was published in the book, The Anatomy of Silence.

Performance Information
The reading will take place on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at 2:00 pm at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. Registration is required for this free event and can be reserved online at www.ensemblecincinnati.org or by calling (513) 421-3555.

ON CUE June 2022 ACT Newsletter

ACT_logoLinda Roll, editor

It is so good to be back live once again! It has been a very long time since we have been together.

On June 17-28, the theatre excerpts were once again held at Miami University’s Hamilton Campus in Parrish Auditorium. Everyone was excited to once again have the OCTA regional/ACT fest.  Special recognition goes to Amanda Emmons Shumate, ACT’s 1st VP, for her excellent job in making sure that everything was in place. Gary Rogers who was once again the stage manager and creator of the Memorial video and also the Rouse/Pitocco/Grooms award video. Eric Bardes handled technical aspects of the excerpts. Joy Sharp once again handled pre-registration as she has for the past 20 years. And especially to all of the member groups for tackling the various jobs needed to make this event work. We are the ONLY region in Ohio where every group does its part. We are very blessed to have this community of theatres.

For those of you who wonder about this festival, OCTA is the reason we have the excerpts. The number of excerpts determines the number of entries each region will send to the state OCTAfest over Labor Day Weekend. Each region receives 1 theatre for every 4 theatres who participate. This year, our region had 8 entries, so therefore, 2 were selected to attend the state festival and 1 alternate was also selected.

OCTA sends tjree adjudicators, who watch the excerpts, give feedback immediately after the presentation and then meet to decide who/what gets awards and to pick the shows that will excerpt. The adjudicators this year were Jerry Zimmerman, Pat Potter and Kathy Hyland. Each group will also receive written feedback from these people so they can see what each had to say about the presentation. These awards are then presented at the banquet on Saturday night. Also in attendance from OCTA were Jesse Bernnal, President, Joe Barton, OCTAfest chair, Jane Mancini and Aara Wise volunteer Administrative Assistant. Thanks also to our regional OCTA board members, Peggy Kenney, Clarissa Sloan, Dan Maloney, Wayne Kirsch, Ray Lebowski and to our OCTA regional representatives Kevin Noll, Denise Schnieders, John Masterson  and Amy Sullivan. Your dedication to the Southwest Region is greatly appreciated.

Below is the list of OCTA awards for the shows that excerpted over the weekend.

The 2023 OCTAfest will be held in Cincinnati with Peggy Kenney and Robert Weidle as Co-Conference chairs. They are looking for volunteers to be on the planning committee.

Also, at the OCTAfest this September, the theme is a Circus theme and each region will be responsible for setting up 3 Midway games. Peggy Kenney is asking for prize donations for winners of our 3 games, such as a bottle of wine, a gift card, etc. SO she is reaching out to the theatre groups and individuals to supply these prizes.

If you have not gone to the ACT website and looked at the changes that have been made, go take a look. It has been a while since any significant changes were made to the website. What you will see is due to the work that is being done by Mary Stone. She has put in many hours and lots of work making the improvements you see on the site. Thank you Mary for all of your work. It is greatly appreciated.

One last thing, over the years, some ACT history was unfortunately destroyed. IF you or your group have any photos that you would be willing to scan and send, it would be greatly appreciated. These will be added to the website and stored in the history notes.

Also, ACT will soon be celebrating 70 years of existence in a few years, so please start sending any new items about your group, or if you are a new group to ACT, send  your information on how you were formed.  Send to llroll69@hotmail.com.

Thank you if you have made it to the end of this newsletter. Let’s all hope that we never have to go through what we have in the past few years, but know that if we do, we will survive.

Any errors, mistakes or omissions are not intentional.

Thanks to all of you for being a part of Greater Cincinnati theatre.
