Aronoff Center Fifth Third Bank Theater [Downtown]

Playwright Liz Coley has cast away Ginger and Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island in a far different location than they occupied during the classic TV comedy series.  And, for the second part of the evening, she gives us six very odd couples indeed in stories that are sure to amuse and bemuse.

It’s 1929 and Berlin, in the midst of a post-World War I economic depression, is transitioning from the epicenter of underground, avant-garde culture to the beginnings of Hitler’s totalitarian regime and the rise of the Nazi Party.

Into this world enters Clifford Bradshaw, a struggling American writer looking for inspiration for his next novel. On his first night in Berlin, Cliff wanders into the Kit Kat Klub, a seedy nightclub overseen by the strange, omniscient and gender-fluid Master of Ceremonies, who assures the audience that all of their troubles will soon be forgotten. Here, Cliff meets Sally Bowles, a vivacious, moderately talented cabaret performer and an utterly lost soul. As time passes, however, the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates changes from exciting and vital to ominous and violent.
