Grumpy Old Men is the hilarious musical comedy about two aging men, Max and John – neighbors who have been feuding for most of their lives.

Invigorated by their shared affection for their new beautiful neighbor across the street, they face off as romantic rivals who will stop at nothing to win her heart.

Based on the 1993 film starring Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, and Ann-Margaret, this stage adaptation perfectly captures the lovably crotchety characters through twinkling humor, great songs, and the affectionate depiction of a small town that feels like home to everyone.

A beautiful Enchantress disguised as an old beggar woman arrives at a castle during a ball and offers the host, a cruel and selfish Prince, a rose in return for shelter from a storm. When he refuses, she reveals her identity. To punish the Prince for his lack of compassion, the Enchantress transforms him into a Beast and his servants into household objects, then erases the castle, the Prince, and his servants from the memories of their loved ones. She casts a spell on the rose and warns the Prince that the curse will only be broken if he learns to love another and earns her love in return, before the last petal falls.

Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature, the stage version includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. The original Broadway production ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Sasha and Cam just moved to the neighborhood, and they love it! The only problem is the neighbors, who are just a little strange. It starts with probing questions and moves on to vague threats. Everyone knows it’s dangerous to be gay, but Sasha and Cam never expected this.

About the Author: Mary was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. After working as a high school English teacher, she now writes grants for a non-profit. You may know her plays from performances at the Know Theatre, Cincinnati Lab Theatre, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, or University of Dayton’s Studio Theatre. This is Mary’s second CPI staged reading. Last season she had Synapse done at the Aronoff in March.

How far would you go to help a friend, and what would you be willing to risk? In this strikingly intimate play, two young people become one another’s sanctuaries as the children of U.S. immigrants in the wake of 9/11. Through years of late-night conversations, they see each other through adolescence and fight to find their place in the world. When G becomes a naturalized citizen, she finds a way to help B stay in the country legally. But what begins as a simple choice becomes far more complicated, and G and B’s relationship teeters on the brink of falling apart. This searing new play from Pulitzer Prize-winner Martyna Majok is an unconventional love story that’s as timely as it is unforgettable.
SANCTUARY CITY is suitable for teenage and adult audiences. Two young immigrants fight to find their place in the world while using very strong language and discussing mature issues including domestic abuse.
