BTC Sponsor Spotlight: The Authentic History of Cincinnati Chili

MISC_Chili BookThanks to local author Dann Woellert for becoming a 2014-2015 Season Sponsor. Apparently Cincinnati chili and theater have a long history together.

BTC gives great content for theatre goers!! Like the original Empress Chili parlor in the Empress Burlesque Theatre – you can find a Cincy style chili parlor near any Greater Cincinnati Theatre for an after dinner gnosh – read about the incredible history in “The Authentic History of Cincinnati Chili” -Dann Woellert

Below is the description from Amazon.com. You can follow this link to order.

Cincinnati is certainly judged by its chili. Some claim it’s not even chili, but those are just fighting words to natives who have developed the crave. Cincinnati is a long way from El Paso, and our chili is not Tex-Mex style. It is a unique blend typically served as a three-way: over spaghetti and covered in shredded cheddar cheese. From its 1922 roots with the Slavic-Macedonian immigrant brothers Kiradjieff in a burlesque theater, Cincinnati chili has become a million-dollar industry supporting 250 chili parlors. Many chili parlors have come and gone, but a few familiar names remain: Dixie, Camp Washington, Gold Star, Price Hill and Skyline. This is their amazing chili story. –Amazon.com

Casting News for Two CCM Musical Theatre ’12 Alum

Jessica Henday as Diana and Mike Schwitter as Gabe.

Jessica Henday as Diana and Mike Schwitter as Gabe in ETC’s NEXT TO NORMAL.

John Riddle is headed to The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for the world-premiere production of LITTLE DANCER, running Oct. 25-Nov. 30.

The production is directed and choreographed by five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman and features book and lyrics by Tony Award winner Lynn Ahrens & music by Tony Award winner Stephen Flaherty.

“Part fact, part fiction, and set in the harsh backstage world of the Paris Opera Ballet,” press notes state, “Little Dancer is inspired by the young ballerina who posed for Edgar Degas and became, inadvertently, the most famous dancer in the world. Torn by her family’s poverty, her debt to the artist and the lure of wealthy men, Marie struggles to keep her place in the ballet corps—a girl on the verge of womanhood, caught between the conflicting demands of life and art.”

More information is available in this story on Playbill.com.

Mike Schwitter, who audiences may remember as Gabe from ETC’s NEXT TO NORMAL, is heading to the Broadway run of PIPPIN as Lewis.

Currently the role of Lewis is being played by another CCM MT alum, Erik Altemus, class of ’09.

For more information on Pippin visit www.pippinthemusical.com.

Congratulations to John & Mike!

BAB’s THE ODD COUPLE Has Enduring Friendships On and Off Stage

BAB_The Odd CoupleIn the Neil Simon classic comedy, divorced sloven Oscar Madison allows his suddenly separated, meticulous and tense long-time friend Felix Ungar to move into Oscar’s eight-room apartment. Quickly the slob and the neat-freak fall back into the patterns of their own disastrous marriages with hilarious results.

But Oscar and Felix’s long-term friendship isn’t the only one associated with this production.

  • Director Marcha Hunley & Prop Mistress Koben Hinman have been friends for over 40 years. As Marcha likes to say, they met in Pre-School.
  • For Marc Richardson (Speed) and Rob Bucher (Murray), THE ODD COUPLE makes their third time on stage together in their 35-year friendship.
  • After 25 years, Rob Bucher (Murray) is finally sharing the stage with Timothy Rogers (Felix), who we like to call the Kevin Bacon of local theater.
  • After over 20 years, Marc Richardson (Speed) and Tim Rogers (Felix) have now shared the stage three times as well.
  • As a fun side note, although both Rob and Tim knew Marc’s wife before they met, neither of us is responsible for actually introducing them. (You have to love the west side.)

One of the best things about doing theater is creating art and memories with your friends.

Brieabi Production’s THE ODD COUPLE concludes this week with four more performances.
