CB_WLWTAudiences will enjoy a free, all-new version of the holiday favorite

CINCINNATI, OH. (December 9, 2020) –
Cincinnati Ballet and Hearst Television, WLWT announced today that for the first time ever, Cincinnati Ballet’s performance of the holiday classic The Nutcracker presented by Frisch’s will be shown on WLWT Channel 5. The Nutcracker at Home presented by Frisch’s will premiere in Prime Time on Tuesday, December 22 at 8 pm, with additional re-broadcasts throughout the holiday season on both WLWT and MeTV, Cincinnati channel WLWT 5.2. “Everyone has a front row seat to this year’s Nutcracker,” said Cincinnati Ballet President and CEO Scott Altman. “The Nutcracker is a part of so many families’ holiday memories, this re-imagined, hour-long broadcast will keep that tradition alive during this unusual holiday season. We are thrilled to partner with WLWT on this holiday gift to the community.” Music for the production was recorded by members of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. “Due to COVID-19, viewers across Greater Cincinnati will be able to enjoy this year’s performance of The Nutcracker from the safety and comfort of their homes,” said Branden Frantz, WLWT President & General manager. “For more than 72 Years, WLWT has continued Leading the Way in the Tri-State on hyper-local programs and unique specials. I am incredibly proud of the collective teams at WLWT and Cincinnati Ballet for the vision and extraordinary efforts to make available to everyone a cherished holiday tradition at the end of this challenging year,” Frantz added.

The Nutcracker at Home presented by Frisch’s will be recorded at Cincinnati Music Hall next week following strict health and safety protocols. The production will introduce new choreography by Artistic Director Victoria Morgan with support from artistic team – Cervilio Miguel Amador, Dale Shields and Suzette Boyer Webb, Main Company dancers, and gorgeous sets and costumes. Morgan and the Cincinnati Ballet’s artistic and production teams spent countless hours working with Emmy award-winning Director David Ashbrock to adapt the ballet for television. Due to the pandemic, dancers will wear masks and follow socially-distancing guidelines, but Morgan said audiences will enjoy an up-close, immersive experience of The Nutcracker like never before. “With eight cameras capturing moments from every angle, even on the stage itself, this is a truly unique experience,” said Morgan. “Those magical moments we share together each year remain in this production — Clara and the Nutcracker Prince, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, plus we’ve added a few surprises just for this broadcast version.” Cincinnati Ballet is also honored to partner with Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra to create a unique recording of Tchaikovsky’s iconic music for this special performance. Cincinnati Ballet Music Director Carmon DeLeone and 35 Symphony musicians recorded a special score for the performance at Music Hall in late November. DeLeone also spent many hours editing the music for this special broadcast. A streaming version of the production will be also available to watch for a limited time after Christmas. The talented actresses who volunteered their talents to raise money for Falcon Theatre are:

Walterhoope Presents 13TH & REPUBLIC, an Interactive, Operatic, Radical Dance Film ⎼ Free For All

WH_13th and Republic logo

Poster art by Nytaya Babbitt

Walterhoope, a Cincinnati performing arts company, will produce 13TH & REPUBLIC, a dance film that addresses excessive police force against Black communities and the mental health of the country.

The film can be streamed for free starting Monday, December 28th at 6:00pm at www.13thandrepublic.com. In addition to the release, there will also be a live-stream discussion panel at 8:00pm following the film. Go to www.13thandrepublic.com today and enter your email to receive a reminder about the premiere (you will not be added to any other lists).

Directed and choreographed by Darnell Pierre Benjamin, 13TH & REPUBLIC takes a conceptual approach to its story through music, dance, and poetry. The piece is simultaneously a reflection and a call to action. 13TH & REPUBLIC features original poetry by Cincinnati poet Tyrone Williams, and an original score by composer Kaleel Skeirik that weaves together Contemporary Symphonic, Jazz, Renaissance, and Appalachian folk song, for voices and instruments. It also features original Gospel music by composer Dan Larkin. Its Director of Photography is Simion Collins of RiverSky Films.

13TH & REPUBLIC stars Montez Jenkins-Copeland with Donald Burns, Brandon Burton, Ernaisja Curry, and Ashley Morton. It features the vocal talents of Griff Bludworth, Anyeé Farrar, Ellen Graham, and Miles Wilson-Toliver.

“I see the piece being inspired heavily by the shooting of Timothy Thomas in 2001, but then taking that and applying to it what we’ve learned since then. From where does this hate stem? What’s at the core of it? And from what I can see, at its core is a mental health crisis,” says Director Darnell Pierre Benjamin. “Cincinnati, as well as the whole of this country, is still suffering from the symptoms of its troubled history. It impacts all of us. It’s not just Black people, it’s not just police officers, it’s the mental health of the country.”

Bruce Cromer to perform one-actor version airing Dec. 23 and 24

CINCINNATI (Dec. 2, 2020)  – Even in this season of the pandemic, certain holiday traditions must continue! Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and Cincinnati Public Radio have joined to bring listeners A Christmas Carol: A Radio Play. Bruce Cromer, who plays Ebenezer Scrooge in the Playhouse’s annual production, will take to the radio for an intimate tour-de-force as he performs all the roles in this one-man version. Sponsored by Macy’s, it will air on 91.7 WVXU and 88.5 WMUB at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 23 and 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

“Until it is safe to bring back the full ensemble for the Playhouse’s annual production, we invite the community to celebrate the spirit of the holidays from the comfort of home with A Christmas Carol on the radio,” said Blake Robison, artistic director at the Playhouse. “Bruce Comer is beloved as Scrooge, and now we’ll get to experience his immense talent and this holiday favorite in an imaginative new way.”

Playing all the characters in this special audio version of A Christmas Carol, Cromer will bring to life the timeless story of Ebenezer Scrooge, who famously hates the holidays and undergoes a miraculous transformation when four ghosts visit him one fateful Christmas Eve.

Recorded at Cincinnati Public Radio’s Corbett Studio by audio engineer Rick Andress and featuring sound design by Matthew M. Nielson, A Christmas Carol will air twice this season: at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 23 and 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Listeners near and far can enjoy this holiday gift on-air at 91.7 WVXU and 88.5 WMUB; streaming on wvxu.org; by downloading the free mobile app; or by telling your smart speakers to PLAY WVXU. The audio will be archived on wvxu.org for additional listening during the holidays.

The Playhouse cancelled its annual production of A Christmas Carol due to the challenges of performing a large-scale production during the pandemic. This would have been the 30th anniversary production.

Cincinnati Public Radio is home to classical music on 90.9 WGUC, and local/national/world news on 91.7 WVXU and 88.5 WMUB. Cincinnati Public Radio is a locally operated non-profit media organization proud to be an NPR member station.

A Christmas Carol: A Radio Play is sponsored by Macy’s. The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of almost 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation.
