Named in honor of the author of the antislavery classic Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the Harriet Beecher Stowe House was also home to Stowe’s father, Lyman Beecher, while he was president of Lane Theological Seminary. The House sits on the grounds of the former seminary, where in a famous debate organized by Theodore Weld, former slave James Bradley and seventeen other Southern students (some slaveholders) convinced seminarians to vote in favor of immediate abolition in 1834. Stowe based Uncle Tom’s Cabin, on her acquaintance with leading Abolitionists and reformers who visited Lane and her observation of runaway slaves who fled to Cincinnati seeking freedom but pursued by slave catchers.
