The Carnegie Announces Cast and Production Team for Special Presentation of George Remus

(COVINGTON, KY) – The Carnegie is pleased to announce the cast and production team for GEORGE REMUS, a new musical. This is a one-time, staged-reading in the Otto M. Budig Theatre in Covington on Sunday, March 29.

Description: A penniless German Immigrant who grew up in Chicago, George Remus became a pharmacist, then a lawyer, and eventually moved to the Cincinnati/NKY region to become the most famous bootlegger of them all! He had government politicians in his pocket, the Chicago mob at his feet, and the perfect scheme for selling barrels and barrels of whiskey during the era of prohibition and speakeasies. With a lavish mansion on a hill and over-the-top parties, Remus was a millionaire playboy in 1922 – some even say he was the real Jay Gatsby. His legendary rise and fall are now the subject of this new musical.

Guests of REMUS can also opt to enjoy a bourbon tasting. The Carnegie will host a guided bourbon tasting at 6:30 pm to wet guests’ whistles before the show.

Third Annual Film Festival at Anderson High School

Anderson High School Film students began shooting for the Film Festival in the Fall. This is for a scene in THE RIVER’S EDGE.

In light of the current Stay-at-Home directive, Anderson Theatre & Film will be using YouTube Premiere to present the 2020 Film Festival on Friday, April 24th, beginning at 7:00 pm.

On March 27 and 28, student films will once again take center stage at Anderson High School. The young Film Department at AHS, in collaboration with the AHS Symphony Orchestra, will present three short films that are almost entirely student created.

The scripts were written by Seniors Emily Ivanov, Caitlin Walsh, Jack Chandler, and Riley Orth, and the musical score for each film was composed by Senior Ian Baker. The actors and filmmakers are all students, and each night the score will be played live by the AHS Symphony Orchestra students.

On-screen talent for the Film Festival includes Senior Mason Weber as Isaac and Senior Riley Orth as Sean in TANGLED LINE.

Film Teacher Chad Weddle, who founded the Film department in 2016, directed each of the three films, and says that they offer something special for local audiences. “You won’t be watching students perform other people’s work, you’ll be witnessing their own very personal stories, their own creative process. This program allows the students to truly share their voice with the community.”

“With three different films on the ticket,” says Orchestra Director Felipe Morales-Torres,  “audiences are guaranteed to hear a wonderful variety of original music, from lush fantasy soundtracks to somber folk melodies and dreamy mechanical inventions.”

The short film STORIES FROM THE DREAMSCAPE required surreal, dreamlike sequences that challenged the student filmmakers.

This is Mr. Morales-Torres’ second year working with the Department, and he appreciates the challenge this format brings to his music students. “It is remarkable to watch them perform in sync with the film, but knowing that everything was created by students is all the more impressive.”

The three short films are distinct, but Mr. Weddle points out that they share a common theme. “The films deal with loss, abuse, peer pressure, all things that families throughout society face every day. The student authors do not shy away from these issues, but rather meet them head on. Every audience member will see or hear something during the evening that will resonate deeply with them.”

Tickets to each showing are $10. Seating is reserved, and tickets can be purchased in advance at www.Showtix4U.com, or at the door each night. Box office opens at 6:15 and the films begin at 7:00.

Taco-Eating Dragon Coming to Cincinnati This Spring

CINCINNATI – Families are invited on a mouthwatering dragon adventure when Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park stages the beloved children’s book, DRAGONS LOVE TACOS at community centers throughout the region. The show is part of the Playhouse’s Off the Hill series and runs April 4 through May 17.

Based on Adam Rubin’s number-one New York Times bestselling phenomenon, DRAGONS LOVE TACOS will jump off the page in a big way as a boy, Leroy, and his dog throw the taco party of all taco parties one stormy night for their dragon friends. But this taco party comes with fiery consequences when the dragons accidentally eat some spicy salsa: They snort sparks, their ears smoke, and chaos ensues!

Directed for the Playhouse by Dylan Shelton, Artistic Director of Madcap Puppets, this hilarious production will be performed by an ensemble of actors from the Bruce E. Coyle Intern Company and features a colorful set design.

The Playhouse production team has had their hands full with this larger-than-life story. “Working on DRAGONS LOVE TACOS has been boatloads of fun,” says Shelton. “Families will love seeing one of their favorite books come to life. This show expands the world of the book with fabulous surprises and hilarious physical antics.”

The Playhouse’s production will journey all over greater Cincinnati, from Oxford to Lebanon to Covington and many places in between. The family-friendly production is recommended for anyone in the family ages 3 and up.

Who’s the Fairest of them all? Cincinnati Ballet’s Family Series: SNOW WHITE!

We have made the decision to cancel our upcoming March 28-April 5 performances of Family Series: SNOW WHITE at the Aronoff Center. Click here for more information.

SNOW WHITE will be added to the 2020-2021 Season, in lieu of The Little Mermaid. Cincinnati Ballet is committed to the health of our community and these are difficult but necessary decisions. If you are a ticket holder to an affected performance, we will be reaching out to you directly.

The classic story is now a kid-friendly ballet at the Aronoff March 28–April 5 + Sensory Friendly Performance 

CINCINNATI, OH (March 6, 2020) – Cincinnati Ballet’s hugely popular Family Series returns for its third season with an all-new production of Snow White. The classic story comes to life with Snow White and her animal friends, the seven merry dwarfs and, of course, the Vain Queen! The kid-friendly ballet features the Cincinnati Ballet Second Company – CB2 dancers, with students from Cincinnati Ballet’s Professional Training Division and Otto M. Budig Academy. Experience Family Series: Snow White at the Aronoff Center for eight performances March 28 to April 5, and a special sensory-friendly performance on Friday, April 3 at 6:30 pm.

Cincinnati Ballet’s Family Series is the perfect introduction to ballet for audiences of all ages, with dazzling costumes and sets and live narration by actors playing the Brother Grimm, the authors of the original story. The narrators make it so easy for even the youngest kiddos in the family to understand the story being performed on stage.

Mom and Dad – also don’t forget to get to the show EARLY! The Aronoff Center lobby will be transformed into a scene from Snow White, with fun activities designed to engage children with a special focus on learning more about dance, costumes, and storytelling.  The purpose is to make the entire ballet-going experience one that is compelling and informative for even the youngest of audience members.

Cincinnati Ballet is also proud to continue its sensory-friendly offerings with this production of Family Series: Snow White. The 6:30 pm performance on Friday, April 3 is designed to create an experience that is welcoming and inviting to any patron or child with sensory sensitivities or specific needs. Accommodations include gentle lighting and sound, increased staffing with on-hand specialists, and a flexible, open-door theater environment with designated spaces where parents and children can take a break from the performance.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Hosts Second Annual PLAY/WRITE: The Jackie Demaline Regional Collegiate Playwriting Competition

(Cincinnati, OH) Calling all collegiate playwrights in the tri-state area! Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati hosts the second annual PLAY/write: The Jackie Demaline Regional Collegiate Playwriting Competition, held in memory of writer, critic, and arts advocate, Jackie Demaline. Students currently enrolled at a university in the Greater Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky region are welcome to submit their plays to the competition. The winning play will be selected by PLAY/write’s current judges, Cincinnati writers Joseph McDonough and David Lyman, with the assistance of a selection committee. The winner of this competition will receive $2,500 from the Jackie Demaline Fund and a professional staged reading of their script at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati.

Demaline’s love of the arts started at a young age. Throughout her life, she continued to be a passionate believer in the arts as an entertainment writer and editor for multiple newspapers and publications. After moving to Cincinnati in 1994, she covered theatre and the arts for The Cincinnati Enquirer for 20 years and worked as an important catalyst for change and growth during a time when new theatres and companies were popping up all over Cincinnati and helped to secure their place in the community.

After a four-year battle with cancer, Demaline passed away on June 17, 2018. As her final gift to the community, she arranged for her estate to fund the PLAY/write competition. Through this, her legacy lives on—providing new voice development, kick-starting arts careers, and caring for the community through thoughtful programming.

Submission guidelines:

  • Students currently enrolled at a university in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region

WHAT:

  • Original, unpublished full-length plays written in English. Translations, musicals, adaptations, and children’s plays not accepted.
  • Guidelines based off of the questions that Demaline asked herself when evaluating theatre:
    • Does it move me?
    • Excite me?
    • Stimulate me?
    • Provoke me?
    • Tell me something I didn’t know before about myself or the world I live in?
    • Hold up a mirror at an angle I’ve never tried so that things I know suddenly have new meaning?
    • Make me laugh or cry?
    • Make me mad?
    • Make me uncomfortable?
    • Make me think?
