Cast Announced for THE ART OF DINING at Mariemont Players

MPI_logoMariemont Players and director Laura Berkemeier are excited to announce the cast of our May production, THE ART OF DINING by Tina Howe:

  • Catherine Cook as Ellen
  • Ryan Bowron as Cal
  • Susan E. Smith as Hannah Galt
  • Fred Gorney as Paul Galt
  • Haley Knuth as Elizabeth Borrow Colt
  • Candace Grissom as Herrick Simmons
  • Traci Taylor as Nessa Vox
  • Melanie Herrick as Tony Stassio
  • Brandon Dunphy as David Osslow

Cal and Ellen are the owners and sole staff of a small, elegant gourmet restaurant. Cal’s main preoccupation is paying back the $75,000 it cost to start it up, and that means packing in the customers. Chef Ellen is preoccupied with the food’s quality and stopping Cal from sampling the ingredients. The diners act out their own private dramas over dinner and their conversations are exquisite burlesques of contemporary attitudes. There’s a sensual middle aged couple who go into paroxysms of ecstasy just reading the menu and then there’s three crass chic young career women. Finally, there’s Elizabeth, a maladroit, shy and neurotic writer who’s dining with her prospective publisher. Her actions and conversation are unintentionally hilarious and a delicious example of how not to act and what not to talk about while dining.

Laura Berkemeier – Director
Kristen Vincenty – Producer
Aimée Ward – Stage Manager

Performance Dates: May 8-24, 2020

The year is 1968 and Judy Garland is set firmly on the comeback trail. The failed marriages, the suicide attempts, and the addictions are all behind her. At forty-six and with new flame Mickey Deans at her side, she seems determined to carry it off and recapture her magic. But lasting happiness always eludes some people, and there was never any answer to the question with which Judy ended every show: “If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, why, oh why, can’t I?”

END OF THE RAINBOW is a savagely funny drama featuring a glorious ensemble of Judy Garland hits such as “Get Happy,” “The Man that Got Away,” and, of course, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
