Auditions Announced for RABBIT HOLE at Oxford Area Community Theatre

OXACT_logoDue to unforeseeable circumstances, our final show of the 2017-18 season will not be The Other Place, but will be an equally amazing and powerful piece of theater, titled RABBIT HOLE.

“Becca and Howie Corbett have a picture perfect family life in the suburbs of New York until a random, tragic accident takes the life of their four-year old son. Soon after, Becca’s younger, irresponsible sister, Izzy, announces that she is pregnant: there will now be a new child in the family. As Becca and Howie grow apart, Becca’s mother, Nat, badgers Becca about her grieving process, and Jason, the young driver who killed their son, continually shows up to ask forgiveness, the group is on a bumpy road to healing with no road map in sight. Rabbit Hole delves into the complexity of a family navigating deep grief, and learning what it means to live a fruitful life when things fall apart.” (Synopsis from http://stageagent.com/shows/play/3265/rabbit-hole…)

This production will be co-directed by Rebecca Howard and Alisha Bond. Auditions will be at the Oxford Community Arts Center on Friday, Feb. 23 from 6-7, and Monday, Feb. 26 from 6-7. For more information, contact Rebecca Howard at info@oxact.org.

His line in harmless, infatuated debutantes is largely tolerated but playing closer to home is not. Just before he escapes on tour to Africa the full extent of his misdemeanors is discovered. And all hell breaks loose.

3868 Dayton-Xenia Rd.
Beavercreek, OH 45432
Auditions are March 5-6 at 7pm

Director: Jeff Sams

Performance Dates: April 27-May 6, 2018

There will be cold readings from the script. A monologue is not necessary.

Rehearsals will typically be Monday through Thursday, 7:00-9:30pm. There may be a few Saturday rehearsals. A draft of the rehearsal calendar will be available to view at auditions.

Those auditioning are asked to list all potential conflicts between March 7 and May 6, 2018.

A headshot is not needed, but a resume is appreciated.

Roles

*Age ranges are not firm. We may cast outside of the listed age ranges depending on what we see at auditions. There may be some potential doubling with the smaller female roles. Unless specified all roles may be played by actors of any ethnicity.

Blanche DeBouis: Female, late 20s-30s. Stella’s older sister. Raised with money but now destitute, her grip on reality is far too loose. She carries eternal guilt, has a way with words and possesses an alarming internal dialogue.

Stella Kowalski: Female, late 20s-30s. Blanche’s younger sister who left the fancy estate in Mississippi and moved to New Orleans as a teenager where she lives with her husband, Stanley, to whom she is attracted like an animal. She is torn between Blanche and Stanley and ultimately sides with her husband, even after Blanche accuses him of raping her.

Stanley Kowalski: Male, late 20s-30s. Stella’s husband. Lean and vibrant, he radiates a primal energy. He has dirt under his nails and an unshakeable worldview. He sees his commonness as above Blanche’s pretensions. He hits his wife, rapes her sister, and shows no remorse.

Harold “Mitch” Mitchell: Male, late 20s-30s. Stanley’s buddy from the war, work, and poker. His mom is quite ill and he quickly falls for Blanche, as if she’s the eternal answer. He sweats through his awkwardness, but is sensitive and a gentleman – until he learns the truth about Blanche’s sordid past. Yet, at the end, he and Stella are the only ones who lament Blanche’s fate.

Eunice: Female, 25-40. Stella’s friend, upstairs neighbor, and landlady. We see the low-class life of the French Quarter through her and her husband, Steve. Eunice lets Steve beat her, yet remains affectionate. And it’s her urging that propels Stella at the end to disbelieve Blanche’s accusation against Stanley.

Young Collector: Male, 15-19. A teenager who comes to collect for the newspaper when Blanche is home alone. He’s just an innocent kid on whom Blanche hits, showing us how far she’ll stoop to feel power.

Steve: Male, 25-40. Eunice’s husband. A quick-to-anger brute, fit like Stanley and one of Stanley’s poker buddies.

Pablo: Male, 25-40. Latino/Hispanic. Another of Stanley’s poker buddies.

[Negro] Woman: Female, 25-40. Traditionally cast African American. A neighbor.

Mexican Woman: Female, 25-40. Latino/Hispanic. We hear her selling flowers for the dead in plaintive calls. She frightens Blanche.

Doctor: Male, 30-65. Arrives at the end to escort Blanche to an asylum. Cold at first, he shows warmth by offering Blanche his arm, much like the kind of man Blanche would have admired on the plantation.

Nurse: Female, 25-50. Arrives with the doctor at the end of the play.
