Auditions Saturday, August 20 for kids’ roles in this year’s THE NUTCRACKER

CINCINNATI, OH. (August 9, 2022) – Tri-State youth dancers and gymnasts are invited to attend an audition Saturday, August 20, 2022 for Young Performer’s Cast in this year’s The Nutcracker. (Auditions start at 12pm; See the tables below for specific audition times based on height.) These fun roles are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Cincinnati children to perform alongside professional dancers in the amazing holiday production. Auditions Announced for STEEL MAGNOLIAS at SSCC Theatre

SSCC_logoSSCC Theatre to hold auditions for the fall production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS by Robert Harling.

Open to community members and students, auditions will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, August 26, and at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 27, in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium on Southern State Community College’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro.

Set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play is at times touching and funny.

Those interested in auditioning should prepare and memorize a comedic one- to two-minute monologue and schedule an audition slot at SSCCTheatre.com/auditions. Those interested in working on available crew positions will be asked to complete an interview during the day of auditions, no scheduling appointment is needed.

If interested in auditioning, but unavailable to attend the audition date, please contact Director Rainee Angles (rangles@sscc.edu) to schedule an alternate audition date prior to August 26.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS will be performed November 4 – 6.

Auditions Announced for BROADWAY BOUND at Dayton Theatre Guild

DTGOpen audition notice for BROADWAY BOUND by Neil Simon

Auditionsto be held Tue & Wed, Sep 6 & 7 starting at 7pm both nights.

Production dates: Nov 4-20, 2022

The Dayton Theatre Guild at the Caryl D. Philip TheatreScape
430 Wayne Ave, Dayton OH, 45410
937-278-5993 — www.daytontheatreguild.org

Directed by Marjorie Strader
Produced by Scott Madden

Following Brighton Beach Memoirs and Biloxi Blues, BROADWAY BOUND is the funny and poignant conclusion of Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical Eugene trilogy. Eugene and his brother Stanley are trying to break into the world of professional comedy writing while coping with their parents’ messy and gut-wrenching split. When their material is broadcast on the radio for the first time, the rest of the family is stunned to hear a comedic rendition of their own trials and tribulations. Broadway Bound gently and humorously looks at the conflict between family loyalties and personal happiness, as well as the challenges we face, even as adults, of breaking out of parent-child patterns that we formed years ago.

Casting Requirements:

  • Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
  • A résumé and headshot are not required but are appreciated.
  • Please bring all scheduling conflicts, including weekends, between Sep 8 and Nov 20, 2022.

Masks are strongly suggested for everyone auditioning or otherwise involved.

All cast and crew are required to be vaccinated for COVID-19

  • Eugene: (23) the play’s narrator. Affable, witty and quick with a joke, Eugene is trying to break into comedy writing with his older brother Stanley. Although he seems care-free, he cares deeply for his family, and through the course of this play, begins to see his parents as actual people with their own stories and heartbreaks.
  • Stanley: (28) Eugene’s older brother. Driven and high-strung, Stanley is the force behind the brothers’ quest to get into show business. Although he bickers constantly with Eugene as they write, he also demonstrates his devotion to his brother and the rest of the family.
  • Kate: (early 50s) Eugene and Stanley’s mother, Jack’s wife. Strong and hardworking, Kate does everything in her power to put up a happy front and keep her family together and well-fed, even as she is undergoing the pain of her 30-plus year marriage crumbling in front of her.
  • Jack: (mid to late-50s) Eugene and Stanley’s father, Kate’s husband. Having spent years working in the same job and living in the same neighborhood, he has become tired of the monotony of life…and of marriage.
  • Ben: (late 70s) Kate’s father. Ben lives with his daughter Kate and her family, while his semi- estranged wife of many years lives with Blanche, another daughter. Ben is an old socialist who doesn’t understand his grandsons’ “comedy.” If it isn’t educating people or making the world a more equitable place, what’s the point? While not an affectionate man, he is there for Kate in his own way.
  • Blanche: (late 40s/early 50s), Kate’s younger sister, Ben’s daughter. A widow who has re-married into money, Blanche visits from her Park Avenue home to attempt to convince Ben to move to Florida with his wife, but Ben can’t see past Blanche’s new wealth and how it clashes with his own socialist views.

Character Breakdown: listed ages are stage ages

Beverly Weston: Male, 69 years old
The patriarch of the Weston family. An alcoholic and once-prestigious poet whose career has faded.  Weathered and beaten a bit by life, he still maintains a touch of his gentility. His mysterious disappearance one evening is the reason for the family’s reunion.

Violet Weston: Female, 65 years old
Painfully honest, critical and accustomed to manipulating those around her. The matriarch of the Weston family. Undergoing treatment for oral cancer, she is addicted to several prescription drugs, mostly depressants and narcotics. Despite her drug-induced episodes, she is sharp-tongued and shrewd in a way that can border on verbally abusive; she is aware of the family’s many secrets and not hesitant to reveal them for her own benefit.

Barbara Weston: Female, 46 years old
The oldest daughter of the Weston Family, mother of Jean and wife of Bill, though they are currently separated. She is a college professor in Boulder, Colorado. She wants to save her marriage, but has the intense need to control everything around her as it falls apart.

Ivy Weston: Female, 44 years old
The middle daughter of the Weston family and the only daughter to stay in Oklahoma. She works as a librarian at the local college. A typical middle child, often overlooked or dismissed, her calm and patient exterior hides a passionate woman who is gradually growing cynical.

Karen Weston: Female, 40 years old
The youngest daughter in the Weston family. A critically self-consumed dreamer with stars in her eyes. She is newly engaged to Steve, whom she considers “the perfect man”, and lives with him in Florida, planning to marry him soon. Karen can talk of little else but her own happiness, and she clearly chooses to lie to herself about her situation rather than face the reality of not having her happily ever after.

Bill Fordham: Male, 49 years old
Barbara’s estranged husband and Jean’s father, a college professor, he’s left Barbara for one of his students, but wants to be there for his family during this crisis. His marriage is disintegrating, and his patience is slowly running thin.

Jean Fordham: Female, 14 years old (actor must be 18 or older)
Smart tongued daughter of Barbara and Bill; artsy, intelligent and a little bit brooding. She smokes cigarettes and pot, is a vegetarian, loves old movies and is bitter about her parents’ split. Willing to do just about anything to defy and punish her parents.

Steve Heidebrecht: Male, 50 years old
A businessman in Florida (whose business may be less than legitimate). While he is handsome, charming and a smooth talker, he is not the “perfect man” that Karen considers him. He is inappropriately sexual with Jean throughout the play and supplies her with marijuana.

Mattie Fae Aiken: Female, 57 years old
Violet’s sister, Charlie’s wife and Little Charles’ mother, age 57. Just as jaded as her sister, Mattie Fae constantly belittles her son and antagonizes her husband, but is accommodating and  fiercely loyal to Violet.

Charlie Aiken: Male, 60 years old
Husband of Mattie Fay and the father of Little Charles. Charlie is a genial man, and was a lifelong and loyal friend of Beverly. He struggles to get Mattie Fae to respect their son. Not one to get too entangled in drama, he seems content with how things are. A gentle man, he often seems to struggle with dealing with his family amidst the strong personalities of his wife and the other women.

“Little” Charles Aiken: 37 years old
The son of Mattie Fay and Charlie; awkward and unemployed, he is often the victim of his mother’s scorn and derision for his shortcomings, which then become self-fulfilling prophecies. He is sensitive and sweet at his core.

Sheriff Deon Gilbeau: Supporting, Male, 47 years old
A high-school classmate and former boyfriend of Barbara’s

Johnna Monevata: This role has already been cast; Female of Native American descent; caretaker and housekeeper for Violet.

Due to the sensitive nature of several scenes, we will be employing the use of an intimacy coach in order to ensure the safety and comfort of the actors.
