The Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy is returning to Village Players! The Vanderhof household, headed by Martin Vanderhof, and filled with family and friends, is a busy one. Everyone is coming and going and doing what they please. But when Martin’s granddaughter becomes engaged to her successful boss’s son, and his parents have to meet the Vanderhof family, let’s just say they might not share the same ideals.

AUDITION LOCATION:
Village Players
8 North Ft. Thomas Avenue
Ft. Thomas, KY 41075

AUDITION DETAILS:

  • Resume and head shot appreciated, but not required.
  • Cold readings from the script.
  • Be prepared to list all conflicts between Jan. 9 and March 5.

Rehearsals will begin the week of January 9.
Performances are February 25-27 and March 3-5.

AVAILABLE ROLES:

  • Penny Sycamore: 40s-50s. The daughter of Martin Vanderhof, mother of Essie and Alice, and wife of Paul. She wants to do it all: playwright, painter, sculptor, but can’t seem to focus on just one thing.
  • Essie: late 20’s – early 30s. Daughter of Penny and Paul, granddaughter of Martin. She wants to be a dancer, but she’s not very good inspite of taking lessons from Boris Kolenkhov.
  • Rheba: 30s. The household maid. She understands the family.
  • Paul Sycamore: late 40s-mid 50s. He loves to make fireworks and gets excited about them. He has a quiet charm among the other characters.
  • Mr. De Pinna: 40s-50s. He was delivering ice to the home and just decided to stay. He fits right in.
  • Ed: late 20s-early 30s. Essie’s husband who love his printing press and the xylophone.
  • Donald: 30s. Rheba’s boyfriend whose makes himself right at home at the Vanderhofs.
  • Martin (Grandpa) Vanderhof: 60+. The patriarch. He’s very kind and tolerant of anything anybody wants to try to do. He’s very unassuming and his attitude and manner are that of a wise man.
  • Alice: early 20s. Penny and Paul’s daughter who works outside the house and knows the real world.
  • Tony Kirby: mid 20s-early 30s. Personable young man, who is in love with Alice. The boss’s son, he nevertheless has a need for something more and sees something in the way the Vanderhofs live their lives.
  • Boris Kolenkhov: late 40s-mid 50s. A Russian dance teacher, who is big and demonstrative.
  • Mr. Kirby: 50s. Tony’s father, a successful businessman who wants his son to take over the business. He is very disapproving of Tony’s engagement and the Vanderhofs in particular. The Kirbys represent the high society folks of the time.
  • Mrs. Kirby: 50s. Tony’s mother who shares her husband’s views, maybe even more so. What we would call the stuffy matron part.
  • Gay Wellington: 40s. Once a big star, alcohol has made her age well beyond her years.
  • Olga: 40s. Former Russian Countess now working in a restaurant following the Revolution. Big and brassy.
  • Henderson: 30s-40s: IRS man, trying to get to the bottom of Martin’s tax problems. (May be doubled as one of the G-Men.)
  • 3 G-“Men” (FBI agents): Any age/gender. Three G-men burst in, getting the terrorists and bomb-makers that are the Vanderhofs.

The Passing of Joanne “JoJo” Parker

MISC_Joanne ParkerFrom Gaslight Theater Players Facebook page:

The Player’s have lost one of their own. On August 26, our member and dear friend Joanne “JoJo” Parker lost her battle with Covid. We are grieving and will miss our JoJo so very much. She was a light to us all, a friend, a wife, a daughter, a sister, and so much more. She was beautiful and funny and was so helpful to anyone and her wit and smile could light up the room. If you knew her, you were blessed because of her.

To all of her family and friends, we offer our sincere condolences.

We will miss you JoJo. Til we meet again

Synopsis
Accusations, mistaken identities, and romances run wild in this traditional, laugh-out-loud farce. Two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have been secretly making wine to keep the convent’s doors open, but Paul and Sally, reporters and former fiancées, are hot on their trail. They go undercover as a nun and priest, but their presence, combined with the addition of a new nun, spurs paranoia throughout the convent that spies have been sent from Rome to shut them down. Wine and secrets are inevitably spilled as everyone tries to preserve the convent and reconnect with lost loves.

Characters

The cast of eight consists of three men and five women.

The age range listed with the characters is a suggested age range. It does not mean that the actor must be within that age range.

  • Sister Philamena (F) – Age range: any. One of the three nuns who live at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing convent. Has secretly been making wine for several years with Sister Augusta in order to keep the convent open. Both Sister Philamena and Sister Augusta are devout and are dedicated to their calling. They are also joyful and humorous.
  • Sister Augusta (F) – Age range: any. One of the three nuns who live at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing convent. Has secretly been making wine for several years with Sister Philamena in order to keep the convent open. Both Sister Philamena and Sister Augusta are devout and are dedicated to their calling. They are also joyful and humorous.
  • George (M) – Age range: 20s to early 40s. Caretaker and gardener at the convent. George isn’t dumb but he isn’t the brightest person either.
  • Mother Superior (F) – Age range: 40s to early 60s. Has been in charge of the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing for many years. Hates alcohol, especially wine. Somewhat wily.
  • Paul (M) – Age: Plays 24. Newspaper reporter. Co-worker and former fiancé of Sally. Paul is an orphan. He’s a good writer, but his conscience sometimes gets in the way of his reporting. Actor must be willing to wear a nun’s habit
  • Sally (F) – Age range: 20s to 30s. Award-winning newspaper reporter. Used to be engaged to Paul. Left him standing at the altar on their wedding day to cover and important story. Quick witted and sometimes sharp tongued.
  • Sister Mary Catherine (F) – Age: Plays 24. A novice nun sent to the convent to finish her training. Meek and timid.
  • Father Chenille (M) – Age range: 40s to 60s. Priest of the local parish that the convent is next to. Patient, understanding, and a little clumsy.

Auditions will involve cold readings from the script. A head shot will be appreciated, but not required. Rehearsals begin in December.

If you cannot make the audition dates and are interested in a role, contact Dan Hawkins at danhawkins66@gmail.com to schedule an alternate audition.
