Audition Call for Modern Dancers at MamLuft&Co. Dance

MamLuft&Co. Dance, a progressive modern dance company in Cincinnati, Ohio, auditions annually for intelligent and skilled dancers who possess a strong commitment to the rehearsal process and the development of original dance in an ensemble.

The Company seeks experienced, mature dancers with strong training and experience in modern and “post-modern” techniques, including release techniques, weight share/partnering, and somatic practices.

Successful applicants will be invited to join a community, in which all members — regardless of their roles on stage — are responsible for creating, producing, and public relations in/for a grassroots organization.

Applicants should be committed to being an integral part of the development and advancement of a young, but exceptional organization. The season’s in-depth and extended process takes place over a ~40-45 week season.

Experienced adults and serious inquiries only. MamLuft&Co. Dance prefers not to enlist students who are still in college, but may do so in exceptional cases.

Video Pre-Screen
Applicants are welcome to send Artistic Director Jeanne Mam-Luft (jeanne@mamluftcodance.org) video links of dancers in class, performance, and/or rehearsal. Use the subject line: “Video audition pre-screen.” Jeanne will let you know if she recommends you attend in person or not. We strongly encourage sending videos that are in-line with MamLuft&Co. Dance’s aesthetic, which you can get a sense of at vimeo.com/mamluftcodance or facebook.com/mamluftcodance.

When to Audition
Preferred: attend open audition on Saturday, March 30, 2019 (11-1:30pm and 3:00-5:00pm call backs).

Less preferred: by appointment before May 2019 or June 3 and 4 at the Summer Workshop/Intensive, if positions are still available.

Rehearsals for the 2019-2020 season may begin as early as June 23.

THE LION IN WINTER to Open as Falcon’s Fourth Production of 2018-19

Who knew that dungeons, daggers, duplicity, and deception could be so much fun?

It’s all part of THE LION IN WINTER, James Goldman’s deliciously wicked accounting of the love-hate travails between England’s King Henry II and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and the accompanying power struggle to name the next heir to the English throne. Comedic in tone, darkly dramatic in action, and filled to overflowing with Goldman’s razor-sharp wit and dialogue, the play has been an audience favorite for more than fifty years. 

And it’s coming to the stage at Falcon Theatre. The production is the fourth of Falcon’s 2018-19 season, opening March 22. 

Eleanor has been imprisoned for ten years, after raising an army against her husband Henry.  But with Henry throwing a Christmas feast for the newly crowned King Philip II of France, the Plantagenets need to appear a happy family. Just for the occasion, Henry has released Eleanor from prison. Also in attendance are Henry’s three sons, each of whom is jockeying for position to be the named heir. The squabbling, backstabbing, and plotting that occurs among the brothers and the dangerous cat-and-mouse game played between Henry and Eleanor form the action of the story. 

The actual historical events portrayed in the play take place in 1183, but Falcon director Tara Williams has moved the setting to modern times, all the way to 2019, in fact. 

“The story may have taken place in the Middle Ages, but the major themes of the the piece, such as sibling rivalry, aging, death, ambition, and inheritance among royals, are as relevant now as they have ever been,” Ms. Williams says. “Royals today might be more outwardly civil to one another, and the scheming might be less bloody, but I suspect that the motivations and certainly the stakes haven’t lessened a bit since medieval times.” 

The Falcon production features Allen R. Middleton as Henry, Tracy M. Schoster as Eleanor, Greg Mallios as Richard, Jared Earland as Geoffrey, Clay Winstead as John, Lexi Rigsby as Alais, and Dan Robertson as Philip. 

Performances are at 8 PM on March 22, 23, 28, 29, and 30, and on April 4, 5, and 6. Ticket prices are $25 for adults and $15 for students with ID. Patrons enjoy a $5 discount for Thursday performances. Visit falcontheater.net to reserve seats.

The Cincinnati Ballet Leaps to the Arts Center of Dunham for Free Family Fun

MISC_Arts Center At Dunham logoCINCINNATI, OH – February 18, 2019 — Courtesy of a grant from Price Hill Arts CAT and Price Hill Will, the Free Family Fun Series at the Arts Center at Dunham features plies and arabesques with the Cincinnati Ballet on Saturday, March 2 at 2 pm.

CB_new logoDancers from the prestigious Cincinnati Ballet will provide an exciting peek into the typical day in the life of professional dancers. Audience members will learn the fundamentals of the art of ballet and gain an understanding of the discipline and athleticism required for a professional career in ballet. A dance demonstration with audience participation and a question and answer discussion are included.

All Free Family Fun Series performances are on Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. The remaining series includes:

  • April 6, 2019 ROKCincy Opera for Children: “Little Red Riding Hood”
    ROKCincy presents the fairy tale we all know and love, but with uniquely ROKCincy twists and humor. The performance is 40 minutes in length and includes a Q&A session with performers afterward. ROKCincy, Roundabout Opera for Kids: Cincinnati, is a non-profit program with a mission to introduce young people to the thrill of live, fully staged opera and to give developing professional musicians an opportunity to hone their performance skills through experience.
  • May 18, 2019 Five Little Monkeys by Ernie Nolan, adapted from the series of books by Eileen Christelow and performed by the Playhouse in the Park’s Off the Hill Productions. Going shopping, baking cakes, sitting in trees and jumping on beds. Mayhem ensues in this zany plat told in cumulative verse as five silly simian siblings insist on doing things their own way. Recommended for ages 4 and up.

The Arts Center at Dunham is an arts center for the west side of Cincinnati and its vision is to provide affordable creative and performing arts for Price Hill and surrounding communities. Housed in one of the three remaining buildings of what was the first municipally owned tuberculosis sanatorium in the United States, the Arts Center includes a 350-seat performance venue as well as extensive studio and programming space. However, a crusading do-gooder Houston radio commentator and his conservative audience expose the Chicken Ranch, forcing it to shut its doors forever.
