Oscar Wilde’s Classic Comedy LADY WINDERMERE’S FAN Opens CCM’s 2019-20 Play Series

CINCINNATI, OH — The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) opens its new CCMONSTAGE Play Series with Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan, playing Oct. 3-6 with a preview performance on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Dubbed “smart, funny” by the San Francisco Chronicle, this 19th-century satire connects with modern audiences with its biting criticism of a hypocritical society.

“The play examines a time when reputation, gossip and social status were made and lost in the ballrooms and drawing rooms of the Victorian home,” says CCM Acting Professor Susan Felder, director of the production. “Social media moved slower, but it was still as rampant, reactive and harsh as a Twitter account.”

The play opens with plans for Lady Windermere’s coming of age party at 21 years old, but a rumor that her husband is having an affair with a mysterious woman taints the celebration. As she navigates through the Victorian double standards for men and women, Lady Windermere develops an altered understanding of what it means to be “respectable” and “good.”

Lady Windermere’s Fan was Oscar Wilde’s first theatrical success. Full of intrigue, secrets and shocking revelations, the comedy features one of the playwrights most famous lines: “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

Auditions Announced for A GIFT TO REMEMBER at Brookville Community Theatre

BVCT_logoThe Brookville Community Theatre will be holding auditions for the Christmas drama A GIFT TO REMEMBER adapted by Joseph Robinette and directed by Sherron Henry on Tuesday September 24th and Wednesday September 25th at 7pm.

Come prepared for cold readings from the script, and please bring your conflicts for the months of October and November. The director is looking for 6 males, 8 females and 1 girl, aged 7-10. The show runs November 14th-24th.

On Christmas Eve, during a snowstorm, a group of strangers are on a train to Boston from Bangor, Maine, where the airport had been shut down due to the weather. Once they reach Boston, many of the passengers hope to make connections to various destinations across the United States. A sailor is trying to get to Texas to place an engagement ring on his girlfriend’s finger. A software salesman, returning from a business trip, wants to return to Los Angeles and patch things up with his wife. A recently widowed woman wishes to spend the holidays with her daughter’s family in Boston. A man and his wife are attempting to reach Maryland in time for the birth of their first grandchild. And other travelers have similar desires to reach their destinations in time for Christmas. However, the train develops engine trouble, and there are track problems ahead. The passengers are suddenly forced to disembark and take shelter in a small depot in New Hampshire. Understandably disappointed and dispirited, they try to make the best of things with little success at first. Eventually, however, they begin to bond, despite their circumstances. They even find themselves beginning to accept their fate by finding ways to celebrate the true spirit of Christmas. As the former strangers become collective friends, through patience, understanding and humor, they realize the memory of this night will be a gift to remember.

When Christopher finds his neighbor’s dead dog, Wellington, he becomes determined to solve the mystery of who murdered the dog.
