BUS STOP Runs Sept. 5-15

BVCT_Bus StopBUS STOP
Brookville Community Theatre
Sept. 5-15
[Brookville, Oh.]

Directed by Sherron Henry

Cast: Kailee Hoskins as Elma Duckworth, Anne VanDercook as Grace Hoylard, James Nelson as Will Masters, Erica Flory as Cherie, Alain Alejandro as Dr. Gerald Lyman,
Carl: Derek Combs as Carl, Kendal Garrett as Bo Decker & Zeke Williford as Virgil Blessing

In the middle of a howling snowstorm, a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner. All roads are blocked, and four or five weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning. Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse in a sparkling gown and a seedy fur-trimmed jacket, is the passenger with most to worry about. She’s been pursued, made love to and finally kidnapped by a twenty-one-year-old cowboy with a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull. The belligerent cowhand is right behind her, ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana. Even as she’s ducking out from under his clumsy but confident embraces, and screeching at him fiercely to shut him up, she pauses to furrow her forehead and muse, “Somehow deep inside of me I got a funny feeling I’m gonna end up in Montana.” As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the cafe and the bus driver at last find time to develop a friendship of their own; a middle-age scholar comes to terms with himself; and a young girl who works in the cafe also gets her first taste of romance.

FAT HAM Runs Sept. 6-22

FAT HAM
Cincinnati Shakespeare Company
Sept. 6-22
[Over-the-Rhine]

Directed by Darnell Pierre Benjamin

Cast: Geoffrey Warren Barnes II* as Tio, Jasimine Bouldin as Opal, Burgess Bryd* as Rabby, Je’Shaun Jackson as Juicy, David Everett Moore* as Rev/Pap, Malik Smith as Larry & Marva Williams-Parker as Tedra

Weeks after his father’s funeral, Juicy, a queer Black man, finds himself at a barbeque with his family and friends. But here’s the rub: the barbeque is a wedding reception for his mother and his uncle. When the ghost of Juicy’s father appears like a specter out of the smoke, demanding vengeance for his murder, Juicy learns revenge is a dish best served “char-cold.” This sweet and spicy reimaging of Shakespeare’s Hamlet serves up a feast of drama, with loyalty, identity, and power dynamics on the menu in what the New York Times calls “a hilarious yet profound tragedy smothered in comedy.” 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Drama Winner. Content Advisory: This production includes strong language, mature themes, sexual content, and mild violence.
