Auditions Announced for MATILDA the Musical at Royal Theatre Company

RTC_logoThe ROYAL Theatre Company is excited to announce that we will hold auditions on February 27th & February 28th for MATILDA the Musical.

Based on the classic book by Roald Dahl, Matilda is the story of a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence, and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!

Cincinnati, OH: Following the resounding success of last year’s groundbreaking event, the Cincinnati Fringe Festival is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated return of its Unified Auditions. Scheduled for Saturday, February 24th in Covington, KY, and Sunday, February 25th in Cincinnati, Ohio, these one-on-one sessions offer a unique opportunity for producers and artists to connect, collaborate, and bring new theatrical projects to life.

Breaking away from the traditional audition format, the Speed Pitch Sessions will see Cincy Fringe Producers and aspiring artists engage in rapid-fire, 5-minute long pitch sessions. During these sessions, producers will have the chance to pitch their projects – whether they be plays, devised works, or experimental pieces – to a diverse pool of talented artists. At the same time, artists will have the opportunity to pitch themselves – showcasing their skills, talents, and artistic vision to producers in search of collaborators.

“We believe that collaboration is at the heart of great theatre, and our Speed Pitch Sessions are designed to facilitate meaningful connections between producers and artists,” says Katie Hartman, Cincy Fringe Producer. “By providing a platform for producers to share their projects and artists to showcase their talents, we hope to inspire exciting new collaborations and bring fresh, innovative theatrical works to the stage.”

Open to performers of all backgrounds, experience levels, and disciplines, this event promises to be an inclusive and welcoming event where all artists can practice their self-pitch and be seen. Auditioning artists may prepare a short monologue (30-45 seconds) but more importantly they are encouraged to bring their VIBE (Vision, Insight, Best Self, Energy). Producers may have audition sides available. Materials (headshot and resume) will be submitted digitally in the registration form and available to producers. Walk-ins will be accepted, though pre-registration is very much appreciated!

Pulitzer Finalist STEW Draws Unforgettable Portrait of Three Generations of Black Women Beginning March 2

CINCINNATI (Feb. 20) – Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park brings one of American theatre’s most significant new voices to the stage beginning March 2. Playwright Zora Howard’s STEW, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, portrays three generations of Black women in this contemporary drama running through April 4 in the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre. Opening night is March 7. STEW is presented by Johnson Investment Counsel and Clark Schaefer Hackett.

The four Tucker women who keep STEW brewing each lead remarkably different lives, presenting a mosaic of personalities and stories onstage. As they take turns preparing a stew in Mama’s kitchen, closely held details of their lives rise slowly to the surface through a warm, conversational, often funny script. As the 90 minutes unfold, a complex drama about mothers and daughters rises to the surface.

“The women of the Tucker family are beautiful reflections of each other,” explains Director Stori Ayers, who previously appeared as an actor in August Wilson’s Jitney at the Playhouse in 2016. “Zora Howard has taken what feels like a multi-generational story and flipped it on its head. The everyday sorrows, disappointments and hopes of three generations of women are explored as we ask ourselves what is passed down, what is repeated, what will never change and could I have done anything differently.”

STEW was a finalist for the 2021 Pulitzer Prize. Its accolades include praise from The New York Times and The New Yorker, which said it “… feels familiar without being cliché, delivering a captivating story that’s intimate, funny, and heartbreaking in equal measure.”

“Each audience member will experience this story from their particular place in life and hopefully walk away with something that challenges them, ignites them, inspires them or simply moves them in a way that their life, way of thinking or decision-making is forever impacted,” Ayer says.
