Hidden History Comes Alive in RADIUM GIRLS by The Drama Workshop Sept. 30-Oct. 16

TDW_Radium Girls large logoTwenty years after its discovery, radium was considered a miracle cure for everything from rheumatism to cancer, Madame Curie was an international celebrity, and luminous watches, first used by soldiers, became fashion pieces—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease.

How could something seemingly helpful also be so dangerous? How can a lauded scientific discovery bring despair? Inspired by a true story, “Radium Girls” traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a watch dial painter, as she fights for her day in court.

“At a time when women had just won the right to vote in America, it was a group of women who asserted themselves to create positive change and left in their wake a legacy that had immeasurable impact on the medical field and the labor rights movement. ‘Radium Girls’ celebrates the grit and tenacity of the women who battled seemingly insurmountable odds to be seen and heard. Refusing to be silenced by those who denied science in favor of monetary gain, these women bravely placed their own needs aside in pursuit of justice and safer working conditions for all,” says director Amanda Borchers. “I hope you will join us for this gripping and inspiring tale about the strength of believing in your own voice and advocating for the wellbeing of others.”
