Cincinnati Ballet welcomes new Artistic Director Jodie Gates

CB_Kaplan New Works 2022The 22-23 Season opens with ‘The Kaplan New Works Series’ at Aronoff Center, Sept. 8-18

Cincinnati, OH (August 22, 2022) – For the first time in 25 years, Cincinnati Ballet has a new artistic leader. Jodie Gates has officially assumed her role as the Company’s Artistic Director and welcomes audiences to the first production of Cincinnati Ballet’s 2022-2023 Season with The Kaplan New Works Series at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, Jarson-Kaplan Theater. “The creation of new choreography is critical to the evolution of the artform,” Gates said. “One of my goals for the Company is to demystify ballet and encourage new voices and perspectives in contemporary dance. While I did not program this season’s New Works, I am excited to experience these world and regional premieres. I am grateful for the Company’s longstanding commitment to encouraging choreographic experimentation and that commitment will continue in my artistic vision for the future.”

This Season’s New Works features contemporary dance including a world premiere from Cincinnati choreographer and DANCEFIX founder Heather Britt and a Cincinnati premiere by award-winning British choreographer Cathy Marston. The program also features premieres from Cincinnati Ballet dancers Daniel Baldwin, Taylor Carrasco, and Melissa Gelfin De-Poli. Over the years, New Works has reached cult-type status with Cincinnati audiences who are often first to experience groundbreaking world premieres by up-and-coming choreographers in the intimate Jarson-Kaplan Theater. Big names in the dance world including Travis Wall, Mia Michaels, and Cincinnati Ballet’s own resident choreographer Jennifer Archibald have created pieces for New Works that have gone on to be performed at ballet companies and venues around the world. Over the past five years, New Works also became a unique artistic incubator of sorts for Cincinnati Ballet dancers interested in becoming choreographers. Each year, industry leaders select pieces created by Cincinnati Ballet dancers for the Company’s annual Choreography Workshop in the Spring; Those creations are then commissioned and performed during New Works.

Jodie Gates assumed her position as Cincinnati Ballet Artistic Director, Sue and Bill Friedlander Endowed Chair, and Artistic Director of Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy on August 1, 2022. Ms. Gates was most recently the Founding Director of the University of Southern California Glorya Kaufman School of Dance and the Artistic Director and Founder of the Laguna Dance Festival in Laguna Beach, California since 2005. She began her professional career at age 16 with the mentorship of the visionary artistic director Robert Joffrey. Gates went on to become a celebrated principal dancer at Joffrey Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and Pennsylvania Ballet as well a principal guest artist with prominent companies internationally. She danced title roles in the classical full-length ballets and principal roles in neoclassical and modern dance works and has collaborated with a host of renowned choreographers, including Alonzo King, Agnes de Mille, William Forsythe, Paul Taylor, Martha Clarke, and Mark Morris, among others. Gates is herself an accomplished choreographer having created more than sixty original dance works. She is also an artistic collaborator with choreographer William Forsythe, staging ballets internationally for Forsythe Productions. She is the recipient of the distinguished 2021/2022 Residency Fellowship from the Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University. The fellowship acknowledges her most recent work as initiator for the Artistic Directors Coalition for Ballet in America, a group of artistic directors, choreographers, and educators who are addressing systemic racism within the culture of ballet.

Auditions Announced for GOOD PEOPLE at Fairfield Footlighters

fflWritten by Pulitzer-prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire, this tough and tender play looks at the class divide between the haves and the have-nots:

Welcome to Southie, a Boston neighborhood where a night on the town means a few rounds of bingo, where this month’s paycheck covers last month’s bills, and where Margie Walsh has just been let go from yet another job. Facing eviction and scrambling to catch a break, Margie thinks an old fling who’s made it out of Southie might be her ticket to a fresh new start. But is this apparently self-made man secure enough to face his humble beginnings? Margie is about to risk what little she has left to find out. With his signature humorous glow, Lindsay-Abaire explores the struggles, shifting loyalties and unshakeable hopes that come with having next to nothing in America.

Dayton Playhouse
1301 E Siebenthaler Ave
Dayton, OH 45414

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.

Please bring a list of your conflicts – rehearsals will be weeknights from 7-9 PM, the number of days will be determined by which character you are portraying.

Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play is the story of Elwood P. Dowd, a polite and friendly man with a very strange best friend—a six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch invisible rabbit named Harvey.

Anyone of any race should feel welcome to audition for any role, despite how the roles have been portrayed in the past. Any race will be considered for any role.

  • Myrtle Mae Simmons (Age 18+) Myrtle is Veta’s Daughter. Both Veta and Myrtle are about the business of finding Myrtle a man to marry – Myrtle is extremely self -centered.
  • Veta Louise Simmons (Age 30+) Elwood’s younger sister, Veta has returned to the family home after the death of her mother and is intent on landing a suitable husband for her daughter Myrtle Mae. She is very concerned about fitting into society and all the social proprieties that that involves. She also loves her older brother Elwood very much.
  • Elwood P. Dowd (Age 35+) Elwood P. Dowd is the central character of the play, a charming eccentric whose best friend is Harvey. Elwood is well mannered, very friendly, and has “old-school gentleman charm”. Elwood is Veta’s older brother.
  • Harvey (age unknown) Harvey is Elwood’s companion. This role has been precast.
  • Ethel Chauvenet (Age 40+) Mrs. Chauvenet is an old friend of the family. She is an elite member of the town’s social circle that Veta desperately wants Myrtle to break into. May double as Betty Chumley.

  • Wilson (Age 20-35) Wilson is the muscle of Chumley’s Rest, a devoted orderly responsible for handling the patients who will not cooperate voluntarily.
  • Dr. Lyman Sanderson (Age 25-35) Dr. Sanderson is a young and highly qualified psychiatrist, handpicked by Dr. Chumley. His talent is only surpassed by his vanity. He is as infatuated with Nurse Kelly, though he struggles not to let on.
  • Judge Omar Gaffney (Age 45+) the judge is an old family friend of the Dowd’s and the family’s lawyer. He is fiercely protective of the family and surprisingly understanding of Harvey.
  • Dr. William B. Chumley (Age 50+) Dr. Chumley is an esteemed psychiatrist and the head of Chumley’s Rest with years of experience. He is a difficult, exacting man who will go to any length to protect the reputation of his sanitarium.
  • Betty Chumley (Age 40+) Dr. Chumley’s kind and talkative wife. May double as Mrs. Chauvenet.
  • E. J. Lofgren (Open age/gender) E.J. Lofgren is a cab driver whose monologue about sanitarium passengers is crucial to the climax of the play. This role has a single scene near the very end and would have a limited rehearsal schedule.
