A woman carries her heart, broken into nineteen pieces, in a small paper bag. A man shrinks to half his former size, after losing hope in love. A couple keep the love they have given each other in large red bags, or compress the mass into the size of a diamond. These playful and surreal experiences are commonplace in the world of John Cariani’s ALMOST, MAINE, where on one deeply cold and magical Midwinter Night, the citizens of Almost — not organized enough for a town, too populated for a wilderness — experience the life-altering power of the human heart. Relationships end, begin, or change beyond recognition, as strangers become friends, friends become lovers, and lovers turn into strangers. Propelled by the mystical energy of the aurora borealis and populated with characters who are humorous, plain-spoken, thoughtful, and sincere, ALMOST, MAINE is a series of loosely connected tales about love, each with a compelling couple at its center, each with its own touch of sorcery.

The Carnegie to Bring RENT Alive on Stage

TC_Rent logoProduction to run June through August as part of The Carnegie’s Repertory Format Programming

COVINGTON, Ky. (April 28, 2022) – It has won numerous awards and became the unofficial soundtrack to a generation whose voice was begging to be heard… And now, RENT will take the stage at The Carnegie this June and will run through August.

Set at the end of the 1990s in New York City’s East Village, RENT is a story about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today. Based loosely on Puccini’s 1896 opera “La Boheme,” RENT follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians all trying to make their way as the HIV/AIDS crisis looms in the shadows.

A pop culture phenomenon soon after its debut, RENT features a litany of memorable songs that resonates with audiences of all ages. The Carnegie’s production of RENT honors the playwright/lyricist Jonathan Larson’s musical legacy, featuring favorites like “Seasons of Love,” “Out Tonight” and “La Vie Boheme” that will have audiences singing along from beginning to end.

“RENT continues to be a captivating, compelling production due to all the qualities that made it a hit in the first place: A great, socially relevant story, dynamic characters and songs that are as poignant as they are powerful,” said The Carnegie Theatre Director, Maggie Perrino. “We are thrilled to bring RENT to The Carnegie stage and look forward to our audiences falling in love with the production as so many others have before them.”

RENT joins The Carnegie’s productions of INTO THE WOODS and GEORGE REMUS as part of The Carnegie’s 2022-23 Summer Series in Repertory Format. Performances of each production will be offered at specific times throughout the summer to offer guests multiple opportunities to see each show. The 22-23 season will conclude with the family-friendly production of SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN in January.

Auditions Announced for RADIUM GIRLS at The Drama Workshop

TDW_VERTTDW Auditions RADIUM GIRLS by DW Gregory.  Directed by Amanda Borchers

The Drama Workshop will hold auditions for the play RADIUM GIRLS July 9-11 at the Glenmore Playhouse Annex located at 3619 Harrison Ave., Cheviot, Ohio, 45211 (Enter at the building’s rear entrance off of Gamble Ave.) Auditions on July 9 & 10 will begin at 4 p.m. (Doors will open at 3:30 p.m.) On July 11, auditions will begin at 7 p.m. (Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.) Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.

Inspired by a true story RADIUM GIRLS, by D.W. Gregory, traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, as she fights for her day in court against the U.S. Radium Corporation.  Grace is a dial-painter, a young woman who paints the dials on glow-in-the-dark watches by using radium-based paint. When Grace and other dial painters develop ailments that could be traced to the radium, they sue the company for compensation to cover their medical bills. But will they ever get their day in court?

According to director Amanda Borchers, RADIUM GIRLS is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece for 9 to 10 actors who play more than 30 roles—friends, co-workers, lovers, relatives, attorneys, scientists, consumer advocates, and a myriad of interested bystanders. With such a large number of roles to cover, we will need a cast spanning in age from 18 to 70 years old.”

Rehearsals for Radium Girls will begin August 8.Performances will run Sept. 30-Oct. 16.

For more information, go to www.thedramaworkshop.org

In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Written with warmth and humor, Radium Girls is referred to as an “engrossing” drama by critics. The play offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science.
