Getting Back to Live Shows
Leading up to 2020 holiday season in which live vocal performances were simply impossible, the men of NO PROMISES were facing the prospect of discontinuing a holiday tradition enjoyed by thousands every year since 2015. So they pivoted, tapping Cider Mill Productions and Over-The-Rhine’s beautiful Memorial Hall for a live-recorded holiday soiree. More than 90 donors contributed nearly $7,000 to cover production expenses and venue rental. The group largely convened online, utilizing innovative technology to allow the rehearsal process to continue. The result was a visually and acoustically stunning video-on-demand experience that created a bridge to the resumption of live holiday performances in 2021.

But it wasn’t all streaming video and waiting around for conditions to improve. In summer 2021, NO PROMISES joined forces with the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra in a show called “The Boy Band Diaries.” Performed on outdoor stages in Covington, Ft. Thomas and Middletown, the collaboration surveyed a century of a male harmony singing, from the Ink Spots and the Hi-Los, through the Beach Boys and Motown, all the way to groups like NSYNC and Home Free. Four selections from “The Boy Band Diaries” will be included in the 2021 “Christmas With No Promises” set.

About NO PROMISES
NO PROMISES is a Cincinnati-based professional a cappella ensemble bringing exhilarating vocals and breathtaking harmonizations to popular favorites of jazz, Motown, and adult contemporary music. The group is has entertained at festivals, concert series, conventions and concert halls throughout the state. Its members have graced the stages of Broadway, fronted major symphony orchestras, and backed the likes of Jim Messina, Steve Winwood, Kenny Loggins and POCO. In their day-to-day lives, the men of NO PROMISES are clinical psychologists, theatrical talent buyers, real estate moguls and hairdressers with a passion for fine a cappella singing.

The group has released three recording projects: A No Promises Christmas (2016), All Wet (2018) and The Nines (2019).

The members of NO PROMISES are Joshua Steele (resident of Kennedy Heights), David Baum (Montgomery), Jeff Grooms (Cold Spring, KY), and Nat Comisar (Indian Hill). Guest artists Paul Phillips (West Chester), and Noah Berry (Dayton) will join the group on all four shows, with Ryan Strand (North College Hill) guesting on the December 18 performance at The Carnegie.

Curious about how Broadway actor David Baum joined NO PROMISES and became a clinical psychologist, the surprising musical background of former Maisonette owner Nat Comisar, or the national tour that Noah Berry steps away from for this concert series? About The Nancy James Trio

The Carnegie’s stage is well-known to James, whose 2008 – 2014 annual programs on the venue’s Carnegie In Concert series were always much anticipated and well-attended. www.nancyjamesmusic.com.
