“An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.” -MTIShows

Character descriptions – All roles will be cast 18+. The child roles are meant to be played by adults.

  • Olive Ostrovsky – Soprano/Mezzo – Shy, quiet girl who’s parents are estranged. She is the lead girl in the show. Primarily vocal character, sings powerfully.
  • William Barfee – Baritone/Tenor – Touchy, weird, and abrasive. Has extensive medical issues and little social skills. He is the lead boy. Actor should have a good sense of shock comedy. Would like to have a strong dancer.
  • Chip Tolentino – Tenor – Last year’s winner, over confident, and girl-crazy. Mix of strong vocals and comedic acting. Actor should be versatile with good comedic timing and improv skills. Doubles as Jesus.
  • Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre – Soprano – Youngest competitor, political, awkward, and has a lisp. She tries to live up to both her dad’s expectations. Belty.
  • Leaf Coneybear – Baritone – Aloof, odd, and often viewed as “stupid”. He was chosen to participate after the winner of his district couldn’t attend. Actor should be goofy with comedic timing. Doubles as Logainne’s dad “Carl-dad” (intense, competitive)
  • Marcy Park – Soprano/Mezzo – Strict upbringing, multi-talented, catholic school girl. She is held to high expectations. Ability to tumble and a high level of dance preferred.
  • Rona Lisa Peretti – Soprano – The moderator. Caring and relates to the students as a previous winner. She loves the spelling bee. Very Strong singer, needs a good sense of improv. Doubles as Olive’s Mom.
  • Douglas Panch – Spoken – A principal, does not care about spelling. He does not like the kids and is more interested in vying for Rona’s love (not relayed). Actor should have a good amount of improv ability, as you will be announcing the bee.
  • Mitch Mahoney – Tenor – “Comfort counselor” for those who are eliminated. He is an ex-convict. Should be rough around the edges. Strong vocalist. Doubles as Logainne’s dad “Dan Dad” (motherly) and Olive’s Dad

NOISES OFF Runs Oct. 14-24

NKU_Noises Off logoNOISES OFF
NKU SOTA Theater + Dance
Oct. 14-24
Corbett Theatre [Highland Heights]

Directed by Ken Jones

NOISES OFF has been called “the funniest farce ever written” and takes a fond look at the follies of theatre folk, whose susceptibility to out-of-control egos, memory loss, and passionate affairs turn every performance into a high-risk adventure. This play-within-a-play captures a manic menagerie of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called “Nothing’s On.” Doors slamming, falling trousers, on and offstage intrigue, and an errant plate of sardines all figure in the plot of this hilarious and classically comic play.

9/14/21 Covid-19 Policy: NKU is following all CDC and government guidelines, and continues to monitor the COVID situation. SOTA plans to be at full capacity in public venues. Healthy@NKU remains an important part of our plan even with the easing of certain restrictions. Masks are required indoors on campus for all persons, vaccinated and unvaccinated.
Note: Always verify the latest policy changes before attendance.

CABARET Runs Oct. 13-16

D2D_Cabaret promoCABARET
Dare to Defy Productions
Oct. 13-16
PNC Arts Annex [Dayton]

Cast: Alex Everett as Emcee, Charity Farrell as Sally Bowles, Garrett Young as Cliff Bradshaw, Joshua Stucky as Fraulein Schneider, Saul Caplan as Herr Schultz, Steven Lasiter as Ernst Ludwig & Amy Askins as Fraulein Kost
Kit Kat Ensemble:  William Boatwright, Naman Clark, Courtney Collinsworth, Kiersten Farmer, Abbey Grace, Lindsey Morrison, Anna Stanford, Caroline Thompson & Scott Winters

On his first night in Berlin, Clifford Bradshaw, a struggling American writer, wanders into the Kit Kat Klub, a seedy nightclub overseen by the strange, omniscient and gender-bending Master of Ceremonies, “the Emcee.” Here, Cliff meets Sally Bowles, a vivacious, talented cabaret performer, and a whirlwind romance ensues. Daring, provocative and exuberantly entertaining, Cabaret explores the dark and heady life of Bohemian Berlin as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich.

9/14/21 Covid-19 Policy: The D2D Staff/ Board recently met to discuss the rising cases of Covid in the Dayton area. It is our responsibility to provide a safe environment for our actors, crew and staff, as well as our audience. Recent updates from the CDC recommend that all people begin wearing masks indoors in places with high Covid-19 transmission rates, so we will be requiring masks for all audience members, regardless of vaccination status. All actors, staff and crew (over 12 years of age) are required to be fully vaccinated prior to our first rehearsals, and will be unmasked during the duration of the performance.
Note: Always verify the latest policy changes before attendance.
