THE AGITATORS to Open as Falcon Theatre’s Latest Production

For forty-five years, they agitated the nation and each other. They met in the 1840’s as young abolitionists, full of hopes and sharing a common purpose. They became cultural and historical icons. They were Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. Their tempestuous decades-long friendship is the subject of THE AGITATORS by playwright Mat Smart, the fourth production of Falcon Theatre’s 30th Anniversary season, opening March 20, 2020.

Anthony and Douglass found a common cause in the abolition of slavery, though each came at the subject from a different standpoint. She was white, a Quaker. He was black, an escaped slave. Both used their gifts as writers and orators, along with their shared passion for equality to forge an unlikely friendship. When slavery ended after the Civil War, the two focused on what they hoped would be universal suffrage. Their friendship and alliance became strained with the proposal of the 15th Amendment, which would grant voting rights to black men, but not to women of either race.

Playwright Smart sees the story of the pair as timely for 21st Century America. “The distance between people in this country seems to be growing greater and greater,” Smart says. “And something that is so inspiring to me about Susan and Frederick was their ability to have a healthy, hard dialogue with the people they disagreed with…with the people who hated them. So I hope a lesson we can take from them is how we can better listen to people who believe different things than we believe, and how we may better agitate the people who disagree with us to change their thinking. Or vice versa.”

The Gazette calls THE AGITATORS “…theater at its best. Teaching us, challenging us, reminding us of where we’ve been, where we are, and how far we still have to go.” The St. Louis Post-Dispatch calls it “theater at its most provocative and enlightening.” The Democrat & Chronicle says “THE AGITATORS opens a window into two extraordinary lives while also holding up a mirror to all of us. It portrays the gift of friendship, while reminding us we need to pass the olive branch along.”

Falcon’s production is directed by Darnell Pierre Benjamin and features Cat Cook as Susan B. Anthony and Elliott Young as Frederick Douglass. Performances are at 8 PM on March 20, 21, 26, 27, and 28 and on April 2, 3, and 4, 2020. Tickets prices are $25 for adults and $15 for students with ID. Patrons enjoy a $5 discount for Thursday performances. Visit falcontheater.net for tickets.

CAST_logo

Here is a message from our Artistic Director, Jason Burgess, about auditions and crew interviews for tomorrow.

“Greetings Auditionees and Interviewees: I wanted to give you an update on auditions and crew interviews for tomorrow, Saturday, March 14th.

Both events WILL be taking place. Because these events are basically individual to individual interaction events, we feel safe and confident continuing them. We will be practicing “social distancing” of trying to remain 6 feet away from each other and advise others to do the same.

If you are not confident in this approach and would prefer to submit a video audition, then we are completely fine with this. You may email us a video audition by 5pm on Saturday, March 14th to jasonburgess@caststages.org. If you are unable to meet this deadline for the video submission, please email us and let us know and we might be able to make other accommodations.

As far as crew interviews are concerned, if you are not confident in this approach and would prefer to do a phone interview, we are completely fine with this. Please email us at jasonburgess@caststages.org and we will set up a time to do a phone interview with you.

As far as callbacks are concerned for PUFFS and NEWSIES, the production teams are working right now to figure everything out and we will have a definitive plan by the end of auditions tomorrow, Saturday, March 14th. At this moment, we plan on still holding callbacks next Saturday and posting all cast and crew lists on Tuesday, March 31st.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns at all, please do not hesitate to reach out and email us at jasonburgess@caststages.org.

Sincerely,
Jason Burgess

INCIDENT AT VICHY Runs March 13-22

ALIBI_Incident at Vichy logoINCIDENT AT VICHY
Alibi Players
March 13-22
Liberty Exhibition Hall [Northside]

The Governor of Ohio has just issued a ban on gatherings of 100 people or more. Please note this will NOT affect any performances of Incident At Vichy as maximum seating capacity is 75 people. All performances WILL continue as scheduled with hand sanitizer located in the building. When we reach our capacity of 75 people, our doors will close.

Directed by Alan Kootsher

Cast: Scott Unes as LeBeau, Kurt Kishler as Bayard, Chris Bishop as Marchand, Don Baker as Guard, Bob Brunner as Monceau, Jeremy Spitzig as Gypsy, Jim Waldfogle as Waiter, Jim Watson as Major, Michael Loos as Detective, Clint Bramkamp as Old Jew, John McInerney as Leduc, Jamie Ball as Police Captain, Lon Nease as Von Berg, Billy Bie as Professor, Robert Eveslage as Ferrand & Luke Randazzo as The Boy

An intense, meaningful play that deals with the Nazis’ inhuman treatment of the Jews – and the burden of guilt which all men must share. In 1942, in a makeshift detention room of a Vichy train station, eight men have been picked up for questioning. As they wait to be called, they wonder why they were chosen. One by one they disappear for interrogation until only two remain. The startling turn of events at the end of this gripping play redeems, at least in part, the concern and honor of decent men everywhere.
